5 out of 5 eggsDude, 8 ports. 40 bux.

Pros: Fairly full-featured. Reliable so far. Good brand. Firm construction.

Cons: I don't think this one can be flashed with custom firmware like DD-WRT, but it's pretty full-featured so most people shouldn't need the added functionality.

Other Thoughts: Not a wireless router. I have this as a dedicated router for an IP surveillance camera system. It's currently strapped onto a plywood mounting board. It's been great. Would definitely recommend.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap, but works, most of the time

Pros: Not a bad router for the price, fairly simple to setup, allows for bandwidth sharing. Great for the average home user.

Cons: Dislike the log. My Dlink would allow exporting and several pages for reviewing. This router doesn't. I see one page and no way to export it for analysis.

Other Thoughts: Windows seems to have an issue with this router. After watching a couple of hours worth of video, the entire network suddenly disappears requiring a reboot. I don't fault the router as it works flawlessly under Linux.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your reply and for checking out our Router.

Unfortunately you are unable to export or save the log to this device at this time.

We do have this feature in many of our Routers, but there are a few that are unable to do this.

We get the log from the RAMM, so you will see that the log will delete after a power-cycle.

It is good to see that the device has been working for you and feel free to contact me directly with any issues or concerns at howard.he@tp-link.com.

Best Regards!

2 out of 5 eggsIt's good when it works...

Pros: When it works it works.

It's easy to configure and get working.

Simple and straightforward settings.

Cons: My internet speed is all over the place. I get 60Mbps download when plugged directly into my modem. When I plug in this router it changes anywhere from 35 to 52 Mbps.

It gets very hot due to the amount of traffic I have running through it from my wireless security camera and the recording software.

Due to getting so hot it requires frequent reboots to get it "working"

I have a wireless access point connected to it to provide wifi to my house. Things will randomly stop loading on the wifi such as youtube, netflix, games, etc. It is not the access point because if I switch to back my old router it works fine.

TORRENTS do not work with this router. Look up "router slowdown" it is a big issue with this router. I can't get my torrent speed over 1.5 Mbps after countless setting changes and torrent client changes. Old router works fine.

Random issues with websites not loading or taking a long time to get loading. Seems to be a ping issue where sometimes I'll ping 5ms to a server and then other times I'll ping 50ms to the same server within seconds. Very inconsistent.

Turning off the firewall helped some issues but that's very unsafe to do and shouldn't have to be done for a router to work.

Other Thoughts: The heat issue was solved by putting the router on it's side... Sometimes.

I wasted my money on this because it doesn't work for me. If you have the 2001 internet speeds from 13 years ago then it will be great for you. But I stream lots of videos, have a security camera 24/7 to my pc, and I game on my consoles and this router can't handle that kind of "abuse"

3 out of 5 eggs"Firewall" is misleading

Pros: Low cost, easy to configure. If you're not looking to protect your network from the internet, this is a great little device. If you are wanting even the least rudimentary security, I think there are other better solutions out there.

Cons: I bought this router in part because it said it had a firewall. This is misleading. There are ways to prevent IP addresses (on my network) from accessing the internet via certain ports AND/OR computers (on my network) from accessing the internet AND/OR users (on my network) from accessing certain websites but it appears that there is no way to prevent malicious attempts by others on the internet from invading my network (other than DoS). If you don't open the firewall to the outside, then computers on the inside can't access the internet. Could it be that I missed something, sure, but the documentation provided is sorely lacking and gives no indication that this device can protect my network from outside users, it can however, protect me from accessing the internet. I really don't get the benefit of this to anyone except if you're interested in preventing your children from accessing certain sites. A call to their technical support shortly after purchasing this item, even though they said they'd return the call, remains unanswered - maybe they know the shortcomings of this device?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Router.

These devices definitely have a firewall built into them.

They allow ports to remain closed unless you open them manually.

You can get your ICMP packet filtering from the WAN port and stop common DDoS attacks.

However this is not an enterprise Router and you will see some aspects missing in this device that you may see in a high level security enterprise netwowrk.

If you are concerned about certain attacks or have questions on certain techniques to block any hacks, then you can feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

We would be happy to talkt about security with you to assist any concerns you may have in your Network.

1 out of 5 eggsTooo Slow

Pros: Price and features.

Cons: What a disappointment! The price was great, 8 ports nice, but I only get 25 Mbps. With my 8 port Linksys I get 92 and I'm paying for 100. Upgraded firmware but no difference.

Other Thoughts: And I bought the extended warranty. What a waste of $$$$.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect and Fast so far

Pros: Worked great right out of the box.
I hooked it up to my main rig without the need for the software on the included mini-CD. But once I hooked up my second rig, Win 7 was balking so I installed the software and all was fine. Then I added my Samsung BR player and now I'm streaming Netflix with no problems at all.

Great product.

Cons: None so far

2 out of 5 eggsReally, really wanted it to work

Pros: Tech support from TP-Link was always available and very cordial and helpful. Great price. Newegg very supportive and gracious about return.

Cons: Had to physically add all MAC addresses.
Connection to the Internet was not instantaneous, and sometimes took hours to connect. Trying to replicate connection was unsuccessful. No way to make MagicJack work, even with adding DHCP reservation.

Other Thoughts: I thought my current wired router was the cause for my web-page-unavailable timeouts and my sometimes static MagicJack connections. This TP-Link had such high ratings and great price, I was hoping it would suddenly make everything work better. Unfortunately, I spent more than 3 days trying every method TP-Link customer support suggested. They were very helpful, but I could not sustain an Internet connection to even get to the TP-Link configuration page. Once I did, I got all my peripherals (except MagicJack) set up, added my wireless connection, made new DHCP reservations and was happily surfing......until I restarted the computer. The connection never came back and, even with tech support and trying a different computer, nothing worked to get it back. I've returned the TP-Link and have gone back to my current router for now.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to check out our Router.

If you are using a Cable Internet provider, then the connection should be very straight forward and easy.

You will plug the Modem directly in the WAN port and a computer directly into the LAN port.

Power-cycle the Modem and Router. When they Power back up, your Computer should then be able to reach the Internet.

If you have ADSL, then it may be a few more steps. Plug the Computer directly into the Router and get into the Web configuration page. Click on Network -> WAN, and change the connection type to PPPoE. Enter your PPPoE settings given to you by your provider. After saving and rebooting, you will find that you will then be able to get online.

The MAC filtering as a good security feature, but this is not necessary to get your devices online.

We are sorry to see that this device hasn't worked out for you and we hope that you will be able to check out more of our products in the future.

Feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks like it should

Pros: I bought this to pair it with my Motorola Surfboard 6121, and they have worked together phenomenally. I got oof of the Comcast rental bandwagon, and am very happy. With this and the router, I get comparable, if not better speeds than with Comcast's cable modem.

Cons: I hate the blinking lights in the peripheral of my vision, but I just need to get off of my backside and move the thing around a bit.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: Cheap, small, 8 ports

Cons: I decided to more my wireless router elsewhere in the house, so I bought this router as the main router in my home. 8 ports and fast speed was my objective. I have 30 Mb/s (5Mb/s up) service in my home which my prior Wireless Access Point (AxUS) was able to handle fine. With this router, I best I could get was 20M down and 3M up. So, instead, I ended up keeping my AP and getting second. A waste of time and money.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, fast and cheap

Pros: Lots of features and easy to configure. It replaced my netgear "business" class pro fvs114 firewall/routers in the little blue metal boxes. It runs better and faster than my Netgear ever did even new and was substantially cheaper. Hopefully it'll last.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I've only had this a month so I'll check back in a year and update this review to see how well it holds up.
