1 out of 5 eggsMissing a button

Pros: I won't know until I get a replacement in 2+ weeks with the RMA.

Cons: Out of the box it was missing a button. The #4 button was missing and not in the bag with the e-reader. How does something like that make it through quality control?

Other Thoughts: I sure am glad this was not a gift, as it would have been incredibly embarrassing.

5 out of 5 eggsLOVING IT

Pros: Absolutely love this ebook reader. It's my first ereader, and I might as well be holding a book when I read.

I love the size, page-turning feature, and ability to load hundreds of books into it using the memory card.

I highly recommend this ebook reader if you want something affordable and simple.

Cons: Internal memory is not that big, but you can add up to 32gb SD card!

3 out of 5 eggsE-Book Reader

Pros: Inexpensive, Lightweight, SD Card slot, 8 Gigs with machine can upgrade to 32 Gigs. No reason why you can't have multiple SD cards and swap them out as needed. Easy to download books using computer and transferring to SD Card(s). Thousands of free books from a few dozen websites. Battery seems to last between charges for a long time.

Cons: New Firmware is available that I needed to download. Binary file that will not extract onto the reader so I am forced to use old software. I spent a long time and my son, a professional geek could not get the software to load properly. The screen could have a lighter background to make it easier to read. Buttons for essential functions are too small or inconvenient.
Small headphones are not comfortable so plan to get a good pair if you will be using it for MP3.

Other Thoughts: Having another brand and seeing the difference in quality and the similarity in price makes deciding between the two difficult only because of the SD slot that allows unlimited storage using multiple SD cards. This feature available on Aluratek but not the other. I use mostly 8 G SD cards and so far only have needed two, holding books, MP3 and photographs. If you read a lot of older books with no copyright this may be the one. If this is your choice, get a reading light.
Works with XP, Vista, 7. and with Ubuntu v.11.04 and v11.10.

4 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly good for PDFs

Pros: Lightweight. Inexpensive. Good PDF support.

Cons: Screen contrast could be better.

Other Thoughts: I picked up the Aluratek Libre locally on a Black Friday sale. For the price I paid it's a good little reader. I already have a Kindle 3 and it blows the Aluratek out of the water in almost every category. However the Libre has a leg up when it comes to PDFs.

Small screens just don't do a good job of displaying PDFs and anyone who's tried to read one on a Kindle knows this. The print is either too small or you have to zoom in and then pan around trying to read the text. This little Aluratek however reflows the PDF text making it easier to read. The formatting isn't always pretty but I'll take that over not being able to read the document at all.

Epub support is fine but I prefer to convert those to mobi and read them on the Kindle's superior screen. But if you have a lot of PDFs (they must be text as scanned images will look bad) then this is a nice secondary reader.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value for the price

Pros: Easy to use, great battery life. Easy to add books and remove some. Doesn't hold as many books as my Kobo. But can read Mobi/kindle format.

Cons: Doesn't hold as many books as my Kobo.

4 out of 5 eggs1 EGG OFF- WON'T UPDATE

Pros: Great ereader, no frills. Sale-under $50. Easy on the eyes, drop and drag books onto your micro SD card, insert and voila. I gave my sister a 2 gig micro SD card in an adaptor, already formatted with folders full of bestsellers (Contemp, Horror, Fantasy, Mystery,Non-Fic, etc...). Showed her the ereader's basic controls and she can't live w/o it now. She would not even let me return it for lack of updating ability because it works fine without the next 2 available updates. (It's on version 18)

Cons: This one won't update. I'm no novice. Have updated 5 other ereaders, various brands + complexity. This one is no go. Read mobile forums, others with same problem.
Also...may have the Ectaco quirk; do NOT put parenthesis () in folder/ book title names. May or may not recognize them. Parenthesis in a book title may cause the whole folder and its other books not to show up on ereader.
Don't bother with loading photos or using MP3 player. Not worth the wait, the sound, or battery usage. But it's PERFECT for fast, comfortable READING.

Other Thoughts: Product is identical to Ectaco Jetbook. Licensed by Aluratek from Ectaco, but Aluratek developed better software for it. I may order 1 at this price as a backup for Jetbook.
Don't need bells or whistles, internet, or touch screen. I'm a voracious reader and only care that the pages turn fast and that I can see the print.
Also, don't overcharge battery. It's TOUCHY! Knocked my first ereader down to about 2 hours battery that way. The replacement for that one lasts about 10 hours. NEVER did get the approximately 20 hours reading time advertised.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Gift idea - Intro ereader

Pros: Size; Price; Bought this for my daughter (13) for her birthday. She is an avid reader and loves it! Hers came with 100 pre-loaded books and she is still reading just those. Bought this one rather than pricier ones since I wasn't sure how much she would use it or like it. Turns out she uses it frequently and has replaced someother hand-held toys/stuff she used to use the most. Gald I bought it. It's not as sexy as some other models but for the money you can't go wrong!

Cons: Not the mainstream eReaders - so you need to KNOW how to get more books for it. Mainly using for library books right now.

1 out of 5 eggsRebate Delays

Pros: Works as designed.

Cons: Purchased with a $ 20.00 rebate in June 2011. I did all paperwork and mailed in for rebate. Called Aluratek several times and get the run-a-round each time with regard to rebate status. "we are delayed in proceesing your rebate" or "we are several months delayed due to high number of requests". The rebate form states 6-8 weeks. I am on week 12 and no rebate in site. Aluratek has one person doing the rebates and that person will not even confirm that the rebate has arrived. Horrible customer service and severe delays with regard to processing rebates. I only purchased this reader due to the rebate and now am disappointed with Alurateks entire process. Potential buyer beware of the lack of support and list of excuses. I am fearful of future dealings with Aluratek with regard to warranty work.

Other Thoughts: I publish an ebook newsletter monthly. We have over 850 active members. I will make the lack of Customer Service with regards to rebate processing a major point in my newsletter.

3 out of 5 eggsNot as advertised

Pros: Will read both .mobi and .epub, takes 32 gb card

Cons: Aluratek advertises a "black and white" screen that is "like paper." My screen is dark green with so little contrast between screen and lettering that I can only read it using a bright light source from less than 2 feet away.

Other Thoughts: I called Aluratek as soon as I received this and they said the dark green screen was normal. Otherwise I would have returned it. Aluratek's website still advertises this model as "black and white" and paperlike. I would like to upgrade but have no idea what to buy.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price-this device is WAY cost effective. Got it for under $50. Also, it does what it's advertised to do-it's a working bookreader with a lot of capabilities. If quality of certain features are not important to you, this is the way to go.

Cons: I almost returned this as soon as I saw the screen. There was glare, and the screen was not attractive at all. I could find no contrast or brightness control. The MP3 player is terrible. Very poor quality sound. The jury is still out on returning it, as I figured I should give it a fair shot, as maybe the problem is I'm just not used to it.

Other Thoughts: I downloaded several collections of my favorite authors, and was able to transfer via USB adapter just fine. The included USB cable is chancy. The included documentation is kind of sparse. I had to guess about some things. Also, I like to read in bed, and, being a clumsy person, manage to frequently hit a button I don't want to, as they are lined up on both sides of the device. A "lock-out" button that would disable everything except the page turner would be nice.
