Um, yeah it's wireless.  99% of laptops made in the last 5 years have wireless.  This one has both RJ-45 and wifi.

Does this laptop have an HDMI port for hooking up to a TV?

Yes, it has an HDMI port. Be aware though, this computer may need additional RAM to run fast enough to stream video.  I was disappointed with the speed of this computer.  Much slower than I expected out of the box.  Hopefully additional RAM will solve the problem.

is this thing any good?

For what I use it for it is great.  I play a few games on it but non of the new high tech ones as I don't care for them, I also check mail and surf the internet and for these things it performs OK.  The only drawback that I don't care for being right handed and I use a mouse with it is that whoever designed this layout didn't think about when they have all these connections and the DVD drive coming out the right side making it a tight fit if you are limited on space. According to the Specifications listed this machine does not have a backlit keyboard. The one I purchased did not have it either. so I would have to say no it does not have a backlit keyboard.

the keyboard is no louder than any other laptop keyboard i have encountered, really just depends on your keustroke

is it new?

I do not think it is a refurb.  It came in Dell packaging and loaded like a new load.  I added memory to one of them and nothing made me think anything but new.  The theory is that someone else bought them and then did the WIndows 7 downgrade and then NewEgg sold them. I'm not sure as this issue is still not resolved.

Does it come pre-loaded with PowerPoint? Need it for my soon to be college freshman

No, it comes with a link to download office you can buy it immediately if you need it right away or You can go to openoffice dot org. Get openoffice for basic powerpoint function and then have him buy the real thing at the campus bookstore. Microsoft gives great deals to students. This seems like a very solid laptop so far.

Is the memory expandable on this unit?  Say, up to 8GB of ram?

Yes, it is. I ordered two each 4gb sticks and am running at 8gb without any problems at all. As a recommendation, I would get a set rather then individual sticks. Follow the memory specs for the E545 and you can't go wrong.

Will this play games like SWTOR or WoW at medium settings?

I don't have either of those games installed but I do have Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning installed and running well at higher settings.

Yes, it can. Though you may consider investing in Nero or another burning software suite of you need more specific needs.
