This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Relatively easy setup, comes with two 3' CAT5E cables, offers convenience using the AV+/500 standard.

Cons: Not able to communicate with the units via the Powerline AV Utility despite being plugged directly into it with all other network adapters disabled. Can even get network access and Internet through one and still no detection. This requires manual encryption matching which could be described better in the manual. Speeds are lackluster unless you show dedication.

Other Thoughts: I am using these adapters to provide a bridge to a cheap wireless router to act as a ranged network repeater, which is not the typical setup or use for the devices. I was able to get the units up from an initial speed of 30Mbps to a solid 60Mbps through various techniques.

First, once you have selected your target circuit you should unplug everything but the powerline adapter and try every outlet before settling in on the best. Then you can add the other devices back on to see if any of them introduce interference. I would suggest both a network and an Internet test for this procedure. You will want to do this for the source room circuit as well.

Second, you will want to provide filtering for any and all devices that cause or could cause noise. Surge protectors work fine for this - I am running three on the source circuit and one at the destination, and they successfully remove interference. Lamps tend to not be a problem but computers and computer equipment, chargers, and LED lights with an adapter may cause issues. Prepare to do a lot of testing and moving of cords.

From reviews I was anticipating speeds of 55-60Mbps (in each direction) for my particular setup and, with work, I got exactly that. You may get as high as 80 but you should expect around 60 with effort. The powerline adapters produce minimal latency; even over the wireless repeater through the powerline it's only 3ms round-trip. So far the connections have been completely stable and reliable.

For those calculating for streaming, the blu-ray spec calls for a maximum of 54Mbps, which again I achieve with these units. Compressed files and lower resolutions require less. I haven't had any issues combining more complex network elements, including a switch and wireless repeater, with the adapters in this regard. If I add more units I may report back with my findings.

One last thing: you want to avoid AFCI (arc fault) and GFI/GFCI (ground fault) breakers if possible. Certain brands of AFCI's are fine, including Eaton and Square D. I myself have Eaton AFCI's and was able to test their impact, which was minimal. It is important to do reconnaissance of your electrical system before deciding to embark on powerline networking!

5 out of 5 eggsEven better than expected!!!

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: These are a perfect solution for my desktop which sits in a Wifi dead zone in my apartment.

I live in an early 1900s building with very old wiring. I plugged them in and they worked immediately and have yet to fail in any way.

Cons: I do not have any to list.

Other Thoughts: These WILL NOT allow 500Mbps data transfers. In the most perfect of lab conditions they may come close, but I feel safe saying that you will never see results anywhere near that in your home.

I get 4Mbps Download and 6 Mbps Upload on average when testing my internet connection over these. When connected straight into my router, I can almost always get 29Mbps down and 6Mbps up. They bottle neck my connection slightly, but I have no problems when browsing the internet or gaming over these.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the review and thank you for your business. If you ever run into any issues feel free to give our technical support team a call at 1-877-453-5465.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Product

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Price
Installation
Size
Speed

Cons: Have to plug it directly into an outlet, can't piggyback off of a powerstrip.
Slightly slower than direct Ethernet, but the convenience of not having to run a cord through the house certianly makes up for it.
VERY short Ethernet cords included

Other Thoughts: Purchased this product because my wireless card was toast and could not run a direct Ethernet cable in the house. There are tons of powerline adapters out there, and this does everything all the others do, it's just more sensibly priced. Very affordable and this is really all you need, paying for the $149.99 versions from other companies won't get you anywhere farther than what this setup will. I have not had one issue with the system at all. My one piece of advice; make sure to have a long enogh cord because the supplied one is extremely short, and make sure you have an open outlet nearby. Plugging one of the adapters into something like a power strip WILL NOT WORK. Aside from the cord, great product, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a cheap, visually appealing, less invasive than Ethernet, upgrade to their internet.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we value the input greatly and we are glad to hear that you are satisfied with your purchase. Thank you for being a D-Link customer.

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Works very well. Simple set up. I get the same download speed at the router and at the back of the house where one of these is connected. I get the max 22 mbps all over the house and that is pretty consistent all the time.I have two sets running right now. One is at the router, one is connected to a computer, another to a ps3 and the last is connected to a sony bluray/dvd player with streaming media on it.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I got the first two sets on sale, waiting for them to go on sale again to buy more.

5 out of 5 eggsMuch better

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Well priced, and no issues. Just plug them in and they work.

Cons: None yet...still have to try more than two on the network :)

Other Thoughts: Easy fix for my desktop system that is in a room pretty far from my (very up to date) router. the signal path was through a refrigerator and a microwave, and a couple of walls. Needless to say, my connectivity was iffy. These devices solved my problem. I am ordering one for each desktop and laptop (desk) in the house. I'll leave the wireless for the phones and tablets.

5 out of 5 eggsPleased ....

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: These worked well with my existing D-Link 200 Meg adapters without any config. Got "green" connection rate where my old 200 meg connection was "red". Used speedtest web site and could get highest rate possible back to my PC through the power line adapter from the test web site based off of my max connection speed that my ISP provides. I do not transfer files between computers so I do not care if get 500 meg or 200 meg transfer rate. As long as I get the max connection rate that my ISP provides I am happy!

Cons: No utility to check speed or configure adapters. My older D-Link adapters have this utility. Manual has 309 on cover but references 308 model throughout the manual.

Other Thoughts: These are great!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks better than expected

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Worked as described. Worked a lot better than what i could have imagined. Worked across different sub panels. (from house to garage) For kicks I decided to try it from the house to a horse barn about 450' away, it worked!

Cons: Couldn't get the secure link established, but that's okay. No other cons.

Other Thoughts: The link from the house to the garage across a different sub panel took about 15sec. (75' away)
The link from the house to the horse barn took about 35sec (450' away)

2 out of 5 eggsWarning On Speeds!!

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: It usually works.

Cons: The speed is absolutely bogus. These things only come with a 10/100 Mbit/s ports. The title and specs state that you can get "up-to" 500 Mbit/s. This is a huge false advertising scheme. 100 is the max connection capacity between the two devices. You won't see speeds faster then 10 MegaBytes per second. If the title was correct you should see around 50 but I'm betting most customers will only report between 5-10.

Other Thoughts: The product needs to be updated to say "Up-To 100Mbits/s"

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback and we are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the product. Please be advised that maximum throughput based on theoretical transmission PHY rate. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of traffic
and network overhead, may lower actual data throughput rate. Interference from devices that emit electrical noise, such as vacuum cleaners and hair dryers, may adversely affect the performance of this product. Thank you for choosing D-Link.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback and want to thank you for being a D-Link customer.

3 out of 5 eggsDHP-309AV

This review is from: D-Link DHP-309AV PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Works well with it's own kind. Quick to connect once started and easy to setup.

Cons: Does not play nicely with TP-Link AV500nano
Fights for the data so that either the TP-Link works or the DHP-309AV works. Can't work together at the same time. Have not tried with other models though.

Other Thoughts: Compact but kinda wished the lights were not so big. I can see it light up at the corner of my eye which is a bit distracting.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we take the input into great consideration and we are sorry to hear you encountered issues with the DHP-309AV. Please make sure that the two devices are not connected to the same electrical circuit as this adversely impacts the performance of the Powerlines. In addition make sure that the products are not plugged into a power strip. If you have experience any other problems feel free to contact our technical support team for assistance by calling 1-877-453-5465. We thank you for choosing D-Link.
