5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I think this drive is very fast, and with its 1TB capacity, it holds lots of stuff.

I use this drive to store pics, videos, and music to share with multiple devices in my home. I perceived a noticeable increase in speed when transferring files around the network with this drive.

I ordered one when they were on sale for $350, which I think was a good deal.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat speed bump

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Reduced laptop boot time by 90% and extended battery life.

Cons: Not as much of a speed boost as I had hoped. Not really a con, I guess.

Other Thoughts: I had hoped the SSD would speed up general operations more. I don't really notice a change except for boot time.

1 out of 5 eggsVery slow read speed over time

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price

Cons: Read speed on older file degrade very much. Samsung released a fix + firmware update but that did not fixed the problem.

Read speed can go as low as 50MB/s or less. Unacceptable.

DO NOT BUY

1 out of 5 eggsDo NOT buy. You will regret it.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: When I originally bought this back in 2013, it was the most affordable large SSD on the market.

Fast (at first).

Cons: Data reads get exponentially slower as data ages. After 14 months running mine, I was getting 3-5 MB/s (worse than USB1.0!) reads on old data. I thought my drives were dying and then I discovered that there is a bug with the firmware algorithm that would slow reads on old data.

Other Thoughts: Glad I waited over a year to review this as I would have been glowing about them when I first installed them.

There is definitely something wrong with these drives that I am not sure can be fixed with firmware. I think it is best if you avoid SSDs that use Triple Layered Cells (TLC). Unless you want your system to slowly degrade in performance, and then forcibly rewrite all your data once every 3-6 months (thereby reducing the life of your SSD).

Go MLC on your SSDs! Don't make the same mistake as the rest of us. Samsung has one last chance to make this right via software, but then I fear they will need to recall these drives or a class action lawsuit will probably be following.

1 out of 5 eggsWas great, while it worked

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast drive. If you blink you'll miss your computer booting up.

Cons: The drive will randomly stop working. After 30-60 minutes, the drive seemingly just either slows down to a crawl or stops reading/writing entirely. When an app goes to use the disk, it will hang infinitely. The only solution is to shutdown and turn the computer back on.

The price doesn't help either.

5 out of 5 eggsOver the top

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Samsung's rapid mode is really really good. I bought another brand last year, a 512gb, it was considered the fastest at the time ... a year later this is faster 2X times larger and the Samsung magician makes settings changes required for windows to take full advantage of ssd's a super buy. (got a free game at the time of purchase) in rapid mode it like access times as fast as your memory. using it as a working drive for games, Movie making- Photoshop and the renders are super fast
and a 3 year warranty. pretty sweet. even at over 50 full still fast where my 512 has slowed due to over 50% full so Props to Samsung great product

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: hmmm SSD 1TB <$400 cause I got it during the holiday sales still being in the low 400's still a good deal should have bought 2

5 out of 5 eggsMacbook 13 inch Aluminum Late 2008 Upgrade

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0BW 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: We sent our daughter to college in spring of 2009 with this Macbook. It originally had 2x1GB DDR3 memory and a 5400 RPM 160 GB drive. I upgraded the drive once already to a 7200 RPM 500 GB. She had been mentioning that the system was running slowly around Christmas, so I ask her if she wanted me to do an upgrade on it for her present. I told her it would be like new again. I purchased the Samsung 840 1TB drive as well as CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Memory for Apple Model CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7. Since it is a Macbook, I decided to backup her files to a NAS, and then just perform a new OSX Yosemite installation and then install bootcamp for windows.

She loves it. Boots extremely quickly, and has plenty of RAM now so it doesn't need to swap.

Cons: Not really any cons, but I have a lot of gear at home like cable converters and such, so I don't usually have problems doing upgrades since I do them for a living, but see my other thoughts below for what might be considered a con and how to do the upgrade.

Other Thoughts: Before installing the drive, I connected it to my Dell notebook that I use for work, and I did firmware updates etc on the drive. You'll want to do this for performance. Whenever I do an install on Solaris, Linux, Windows, etc... I always update all the firmware first. I had an eSATA port on my Dell, and I rigged an old power supply to the drive to provide power to it. Then install the migration and magician software, get latest drive firmware updates and installed. (There is one in particular that addresses a performance issue after data has been on the drive for a long time that impacts it quite a bit from what I read)
