4 out of 5 eggsA Truly Hot Card

Pros: Very fast

Cons: Very Hot

Other Thoughts: This is my first SSD, and if you actually have use for over 1GB/s sequential read, and have the money to spend on it, this card is a fabulous SSD. This card serves as the primary hard-drive for my latest machine:

Motherboard: GA-990FXA-UD5
CPU: AMD FX9590-Vishera Core (4.7ghz x8, 5.2ghz FSB)
RAM: 32GB DDR3-1866 G.Skill TridentX Series
GPU: EVGA 04G-P4-2986-KR GeForce GTX 980
DSP: Creative SoundBlasterZ
PSU: EVGA 220-P2-1000-XR (1000w)
OS: Windows 7 Pro / Windows 10 Pro
Primary HDD: Mushkin Enhanced MKNP44SC480GB-DX

Others have done far more extensive testing than I as I purchased it for use with games like Oblivion and Skyrim and nothing professionally related. That said, I've absolutely seen a huge improvement in load times, but one must also bear in mind the load of processing that occurs in such loads. This card will help you for nothing if the rest of your system can't keep up, so line up your system specs carefully before choosing an SSD. Also make absolutely certain you have plenty of ventilation or some means of liquid cooling this card. It gets -extremely- hot to the touch, but I've not seen any performance-related issues tied to the heat. I strongly advise keeping this card as far away from your graphics card as possible, preferably by itself and not squished between two other cards.

If your interest is for Windows to load faster, this card will probably be of no use in that regard. The MB I'm using requires a special driver be loaded during every boot before the OS can load, and this process is rather slow. This process is automatic, but tiresome. Once the OS begins to load, Windows 7 Pro loads crazy fast, but Windows 10 Pro seems determined to be slow-loading.

I'm unsure if this following problem was due to the OS, Skyrim, or this card, but I experienced frequent crashes when playing Skyrim on Windows 10 when this drive was filled to near capacity. When moving from one major area to another after 15 - 45 minutes of gameplay, my system would generate a hardware fault that would instantly kill the system and require I actually turn off the PSU for half a minute before restarting. My inclination after dozens of tests to isolate this bizarre problem, not having the luxury of debug reports, is to believe that the controller of this card gets confused and fatally screws up if insufficient free space is left on the card for it to play with. No other game I've tested produced this result: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, or the Dolphin Gamecube/Wii emulator program. Removing the filler files I'd loaded improved the problem, but it was not resolved until I moved all game files to another drive and back so the controller could rethink how to configure the date. Windows cannot, by itself, defrag an SSD, nor is it generally even helpful to do so, so if you have need/want to force your datum to be realigned, you'll have to perform the same cut/paste job as I did, but

4 out of 5 eggsDied after 7 months

Pros: This card is fast, faster than most of the cards on the market and faster than setting up your own SSD drives with RAID 0 . Setup and installation was easy and everything worked as advertised.

Cons: Unfortunately, this card died after 7 months of service. It was configured as RAID 0 (striping) so I lost everything on the drive when it died. I'm used to seeing computers boot up extremely fast with a SSD drive, but this was not the case with the Scorpion. It took several seconds to start up the PC due to the on-board RAID software. After the PC booted up, the card was very fast.

Other Thoughts: I've sent in a few tickets to Mushkin so I could get a replacement drive, but I haven't heard anything back from the support department. Not even a courtesy email when I filed the tickets. This drive has a 3 year warranty on it and I'm about to put it to the test.

5 out of 5 eggsFast Reliable and easy to setup

Pros: I actually read about compatibility and checked into it 1st. Then I read about the product and what kind of power connectors it used. Therefore unlike the other "reviews" it worked perfectly without flaw. Hmm what were their problems again? Their own. That's right.

Cons: Gets a touch warmer then I would like.

Thank you for choosing Mushkin.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible

Pros: None

Cons: Incompatible with Gigabyte MB. When the card is installed the bios/setup is inaccessible. Mushkin tech support's answer was to issue RMA for a replacement and not address compatibility issue. Since the card has no return for refund it is too dangerous to recommend buying and then finding out if you can use it.

4 out of 5 eggsFAST...expensive

Pros: Very fast, Easy to install - recognized natively by Windows 8.1 and 10TP with no extra drivers

Cons: Boot takes FOREVER, Expensive - in $/GB it's expensive, standard performance SSD's in RAID0 might be more cost effective, Random read/write performance not as ridiculously fast

Other Thoughts: This thing is fast, make no mistake. With Crystal Disk Mark I'm getting sequential reads of 1208 MB/s and sequential writes of 747 MB/s. Not as fast as what's published, but supposedly there is a difference between ATTO and Crystal Disk Mark. However, I think if I had 2 or 3 Samsung 850 EVO's in RAID0, I might achieve similar results for less price. I also bought a Samsung EVO in the same purchase and put it in my AIO with only one disk slot, and benched both the Scorpion and the Samsung 850 (512GB). My results (Scorpion vs. Samsung 850EVO - note they are on different computers but both Win 10TP)

Sequential Read: 1208 versus 512
Sequential Write: 747 vs. 499
Random Read (512): 900 vs. 414
Random Write (512): 636 vs. 398
Random Read 4KB (QD=1): 20 vs. 32
Random Write 4KB (QD=1): 60 vs. 56
Random Read 4KB (QD32): 333 vs. 286
Random Write 4KB (QD32): 365 vs. 235

Don't expect lightening boot times - the BIOS on this thing takes forever to initialize - as in 30-60 seconds. I need to dig in exactly why, maybe there is a fast boot option. This doesn't bother me so much though, since my workstation is almost always on so I don't generally reboot often.

It's a tough time to buy performance SSD's, I suspect NVMe drives will blow this thing away in random r/w performance, but it's still unknown and the 1 or 2 drives that exist today are hyper expensive.

Yes, it does require a SATA power cable, but really, if that's your main gripe then you shouldn't be building workstations.

1 out of 5 eggsExternal SATA power required

Pros: None... Complete lack of accurate specs on Mushing web site about compatibility requirements.

Cons: I carefully researched this item, but only on upon installation did I discover that an external SATA power connector is required to make this PCI express card work. This is NOT compatible with my 1U rack system, as there are No SATA power connectors (only a SAS backplane with proprietary connectors).

Other Thoughts: Tread carefully. Unusable, and tech support from mushkin is gruff. Don't buy this if you don't have spare SATA power connectors.... There are many other similar products that don't have this odd requirement.

Manufacturer Response:

I appreciate your comments and feedback. I went ahead and contacted our technician who handles product descriptions on our website. We will see to it that changes are made so it will be clearer for our customers.

Please don't hesitate to contact our support team for any further questions.
