Deborah this does not have cell phone capability.  I installed magic jack and use the free version with Wifi.  You can't really use it like a phone to your ear either because there is not a speaker where the ear goes normally.  I use headphones and talk into the device.  This makes for a great device when I'm deployed to contact the family back home.  But you're only going to limited to internet connection when you are near a Wifi hotspot.

Can you access microsoft word and pdf docs on this tablet?

It is just like a android phone, u can download any app from Google play with wifi. I bought it for my daughter to play games and watch movies so I never tried word or open a pdf doc on it, but I'm sure u can since u can access apps for pdf and download word.
