On some hubs you can control or "manage" each or all of the ports. So maybe you want one port to have a higher or lower speed than another..or communicate  at different duplex settings. .. the "unmanaged" hub has no such individual port settings capabilities. ... if it has a built in automatic speed it will automatically set to 100 or 10 or 1000 me it's as needed but you usually don't have manual control over those settings

My internet speed is only 75 Mbps, what is the benefit of having a Gigabit switch?

Short answer: not much. Longer answer: A Gigabit device will have lower latency than, say, a 100M device, so it will forward the packets faster. A switch, rather than a hub, will forward traffic based on its address rather than simply repeating it on all ports. Thus you could have several independent streams of packets running at full speed without interference on an 8-port switch: port 1 sending to a device on port 3, port 5 talking to itself, ... . And, of course, if you later add Gigabit devices they can run at full speed.

Is that what I need to hook up computers to wired network?

If you are running a peer to peer Ethernet network between computers this will allow you to do so. You will of course have to set up the individual computers for peer to peer networking. This type of configuration will not allow you access to the internet.

If you wish to run a managed network, this switch is not the solution. For a manged network you will need a router of some kind. Depending on the router, most allow for static routing or DHCP operation and when combined with an ISP they will allow you access to the internet along with establishing your Ethernet LAN behind the router.

This switch is primarily for extending an existing Ethernet network either for increased distance between devices or for an increased number of devices.

-and few devices which need hard wired internet
-i have a time capsule i plan to keep in 1st floor office and stream my wifi from there

will this switch work for me ?

This is a terrific gigabit switch, which has worked for us flawlessly for several years.  It should perform well in your application, however you will need to make sure that you have the DNS setup correctly as the WiFi router will have to assign addresses to your devices and the switch will also assign them.  Just need to make sure that there are no conflicts and you will be good to go.

There are different kinds of CAT6 cables... Twisted Pair and some that don't specify, Stranded and Solid wires, and different wire gauges. I've also seen mention of CAT6a and CAT6e.  I'm looking to convert my entire network to new Netgear Gigabit products, with a GS108, two or three GS105, and a WAC510 Access Point, because I'm getting a new SRX5308 Gigabit Router that will replace an FSV338 that went bad and is being replaced under warranty.  The longest run will be 50ft to a GS105 , one 15ft to a GS108, and most others being 6ft.  What kind of cable should I get?

All CAT cables are twisted pairs UTP(unshilded) or STP (shilded). Average distanse for cables up to 100 feet. I run as far as 300 feet and had no essues.  Just get premade (with mail plug uttached) CAT-6 strended cables. Strended cables are more flexeble.

Will this work outside US? Just want to confirm is there any Network norms to make it work outside US?

It works with standard network protocols. If your country can supply the correct input voltage you should be fine. Keep in mind this is an non manageable switch.

Can this switch, GS108, be used to connect POE IP security cameras? 
I have 5 cameras that need a switch, run is there, old switch died.
