Building off the successful GD04 and GD05, two chassis models that set benchmarks in 2009, SilverStone created the Grandia GD06 to again raise the expectation enthusiasts have for HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) chassis. SilverStone engineering team’s expertise in SFF (Small Form Factor) and HTPC are again in full display with GD06’s expanded capability in storage and cooling performance. These improvements were made with the compact depth maintained (340mm) and exterior visuals enhanced as the GD06 is stunningly beautiful as a computer chassis and fits perfectly in the living room. Its five hard drive storage is augmented by two hot-swappable bays for maximum flexibility while a front door lock and a rear Kensington Security Slot ensure security for the installed drives.

Cooling is provided by three 120mm silent fans with filters for exceptional performance, quietness and effective dust prevention. For those in doubt that a small footprint HTPC chassis can be used to build a powerful and fully loaded media server, the Grandia GD06 will change their mind.

  • newegg Impressive Cooling Three silent 120mm fans with air filters create positive air pressure inside the chassis for excellent cooling/quietness and dust-prevention.
  • newegg Compact Footprint The Grandia GD06’s incredible 340mm depth fit comfortably inside a home theater cabinet.
  • newegg Ample Room for Storage & Expansion The Grandia GD06 support 4 x 3.5” HDDs and 1x 2.5” HDD or SSD (or 3.5" x 3, 2.5” x2), including two hot-swappable drives bays for maximum flexibility. It also supports graphics cards up to 11 inches.
  • newegg Front USB 3.0 Ports The front panel offers easy access to two USB 3.0 ports and audio I/O ports.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent HTPC

Pros: Plenty of fans for such a small case; sturdy and low-profile; front locks; hard drive swap mechanism is flawless; USB 3.0 in front panel; aesthetically excellent

Cons: Requires smaller PSU; tight squeeze for parts and cable management; HDD SATA cables are SATA II and not replaceable; only two hard drive bays; too small to accept Hyper 212 CPU cooler

Other Thoughts: I built this originally as a gaming/HTPC with an Asus Maximus V Gene, 560 Ti Twin Frozr, and i5-3570K. Works perfectly and quietly; running Mass Effect 3 in 1080p stressed it out and it stayed pretty quiet and cool. My OCZ PSU was too big by just a few millimeters, a fact I didn't realize until most of the way through the build. Make sure to measure yours first. I swapped out the stock Silverstone fans and added 40mm fans on back and it works great. I'd recommend a big 3TB drive and a smaller OS HDD since there are only two HDD slots, both of which have a proprietary SATA bracket which can't be replaced. Somewhere it also mentioned that it could accept 120mm CPU cooler if the optical drive bracket was removed; Hyper 212 Plus was about 2mm too big. Overall, excellent case for an HTPC or microATX build.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC/Gaming case w/6" height limitation

Pros: -Asthetics, a true HTPC case
-Locking front panel to keep the little ones out
-Lots of HDD/SSD configuration options
-Can fit large GPU's
-Front cover has enough clearance to fit small RF dongles while not reducing their performance

Cons: -Doesn't fit the silverstone ST50F-P modular PSU with fan in down orientation with modular hdd bays installed
-Stock fans are a little loud
-Too many screw sizes
-Optical drive mount blocks large portion of cpu cooler and ram height
-No good way to install H70 cooler

Other Thoughts: As a combo HTPC/Server/Gaming case, this case has been great. With all of my components my entertainment center limited me to a 6" tall HTPC case. As has been previously stated, the HDD hot swap bays limit you being able to install some modular PSUs with the fan facing down. The nice part is that you can simply take them out. It leaves a hole in the front of the case, but it isn't visible with the front cover closed. With the hot swap bays gone the PSU can be mounted with the fan facing down. The bridge still allows you to mount two storage drives. FWIW, my samsung F1 3.5" HDD ran about 10C hotter when installed above the power supply. My 2.5" HDD doesn't see a temp difference.

The optical drive mount limits ram and cpu heatsink height. But once again, the optical drive mount can be taken out if you don't need it. Heatsink & ram limitations are now only limited by the case height. FWIW, a thermaltake cnps8900 fits under the optical mount.

With the components listed below, and the hot swap & optical mounts removed, the system idles at 34c. After a few hours of Civilization V the CPU/GPU/HDD temps are all between 40c & 45c with the loudest components being the case fans. I may swap them at some point but it's still quieter than an idle ps3.

1 out of 5 eggsReally disappointed

Pros: Looks good, has a good heft to it. Fairly sturdy

Cons: I have yet to find a power supply that fits without removing parts from the case. Did they even practice building this before mass production?

Noise-reducing rubber on the hard drive bracket simply glued on.

Hot swap bays only stay closed when the bracket is in, so they fling out at you annoyingly when you remove it.

The case isn't painted all the way through, nor was it masked properly so there's tons of overspray and it looks really ugly on the inside, especially with a giant "MADE IN CHINA" etched into it. Paint is also really poor quality, in swapping out 3 power supplies to find one that would fit, the retention screws removed the paint. I didn't even fully tighten them.

Stingy with the supplied screws and the instructions had the smallest pictures possible. I had to keep checking how they wanted me to orient my drive before I tossed it and just figured it out.

Front panel won't stay up without being locked.

Other Thoughts: The biggest burn for this case was the power supply. When I pulled a power supply I had laying around for a HTPC case, I figured it might not work and that was fine. The manual recommended one of their short power supplies, the ST50F-P, I went and got that too but, joke's on me, once the modular cables are attached it no longer will fit! That and they bring these rubber mounts for the power supply that need to be attached to the bottom to give it enough height to screw into the back, but obviously after you do this a few times searching for a power supply made of unobtainium the stickiness is just not going to be there.

Overall, this case is pretty bad and not worth the asking price. I had a full tower from Silverstone and I liked it a lot so when I needed a HTPC case I looked right to them. I thought Silverstone was a premium brand, but I guess I was wrong.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Case, small area for PSU

Pros: great size for a home theatre, can house msi frozr ii gtx 560 card

three 120mm fans for air flow

hot swap bays

Cons: tough to get hdds out of hot swap bays

can't use most PSU's if you want multiple graphics cards

probably my fault but I couldn't find specs for how big a PSU this can hold

Other Thoughts: original case came with no keys and was missing some small amount of other accessories. had to RMA for another with keys. can't even install stuff without the keys.

other than that its a good case for what I need to do.

4 out of 5 eggsNice HTPC case

Pros: Small(ish) footprint, sleek looks, good motherboard compatibility, USB 3.0 ports for future upgrade

Cons: Power Supply space, drive bay design

Other Thoughts: Bought this case to house a HTPC to make re-use of an old LGA775 Core 2 Duo chip. I plan on beefing up the system later as I upgrade parts on the main computers in the home.

I like the smaller depth of this unit, although it comes at a cost of power supply size. I bought the smallest modular power supply I could find (6.3" depth) and it was still about 15-20mm too deep and will not fit with the drive bays. So modular power supply is not an option. I recommend 140mm depth or lower to have a little bit of clearance between the fiddly drive bay assembly and the power supply.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy USB 3 in the front? Oh well...

Pros: Case has nice finish and is very solid. Lots of mounting for HDD's and the two hot swaps are very useful. Option for additional 80mm fans also nice. Went together nicely with few issues except a few quirks (see cons).

Cons: The front panel connectors too darn long. Ended up cutting and splicing, they are that long. The length issue also applies to the front panel USB adapter, which is nice that it is USB 3.0. But why? Try and find a MATX board that has that header. I found these issues to be a flop, but not worth docking an egg over.

Other Thoughts: HTPC Build/
Silverstone GD06/ Asus p8Z68-m Pro/ Intel i5 2500k/ G.Skill 8GB(4X2) 1600 RAM/ CM Xtreme 500W/ Asus GT 430/

1 out of 5 eggsCracked HTPC

Pros: Great appearance....

Cons: I open the box remove the case, unlock the front panel and like a jack in the box the bottom left HDD bay springs open. The case is cracked and missing a small piece which prevents the bay from remaining close. I thought QA not questions and answers but quality assurance was suppose to capture this. So i RMA this after spending $20 for shipping one way now i pay $20 for shipping the other way... Thanks SilverStone...
