Grandia GD08

Amazing Home Theater Server Case with
Incredible Storage and Cooling Capacity
case_02

The GD08 cases from SilverStone ushers in a new era of home theater computing like never before. For the first time, the power and storage capacity of a server can now be neatly stowed beautifully and quietly in a home theater environment. Completely engineered to fully utilize all available spaces, the Grandia GD08 can accommodate an incredible amount of drives (up to twelve) and high-end components (graphics cards up to 13.6 inches long) with minimal sacrifices.

With a wealth of lessons learned from building the best performing tower cases in the last several years, SilverStone engineers upgraded GD08’s cooling performance tremendously with up to five 120mm fan options. And to make sure owners can easily maintain their cases’ cooling ability over time with the lowest noise possible, custom designed removable filters surround the case for positive pressure to work effectively and quietly.

To complement the tremendous new design, the GD08 is built with the thickest aluminum front panel of any SilverStone case with a styling that pays homage to the most popular HTPC case ever made, the Lascala LC17. For HTPC enthusiasts all over the world, this case is truly a dream come true!

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent HTPC case

Pros: • Easily fits a full sized graphics card
• Lots of configurations for fans (5x120 mm, 2x80 mm)
• Fits all kinds of motherboard formats
• Stock fans are silent on low to mid rpms
• Adjustable brightness activity / power led
• Lots of headroom for a CPU cooler *see other thoughts*
• Padded feet reduce vibration / noise
• Comes with removable / cleanable fan filters on everything but the 2 x 80mm exhaust slots that have good porosity for airflow, but tight enough to catch most dust
• Removable HDD tray
• Cover is easily removed and replaced, comes with a pad for sound dampening
• "Hidden" optical bays keep the aesthetic look of the front panel

Cons: • Not very much in the way of cable management. With a full ATX Mobo there's a two inch gap between the edge of the board and the fans where the bulk of my cables are run, but no tie downs to use.
• Screws on cover aren't thumb screws (easily replaced)
• No easy access cutout to the back of the motherboard for mounting a CPU cooler
• Minor bubbling of paint on sides of case - not perceptible from more than a couple of feet.

Other Thoughts: This case is quite roomy, especially for an HTPC build. Our build was a couch-gaming / HTPC rig (see specs below). So with a dedicated GPU it adds to the number of cables floating about.

Unfortunately there's not much in the way of cable management features in this case and the bulk of the cables pass between the bottom mounted fans (up to 3x120mm) and the components, blocking air flow.

In future iterations of the design it would be useful to have the bottom of the case drop down behind the bottom mounted fans (under the mobo) which would allow for a bottom panel and access behind the mobo for cable management and a cutout for easier CPU cooler install while still having the excellent bottom mounted fans. This is why there's one egg off. We only have a single SSD and a blue ray drive in there, I couldn't imagine the tangled array you'd have if you used more drives.

Otherwise the case is excellent, it looks great, it's sizable and has good customization for air flow. I ended up reversing the 120 mm intake fan at the back right hand side to an exhaust and have 3x120 mm intakes on the bottom to avoid using noisier 80 mm exhaust fans. Seems to be keeping things reasonably cool so far.

At the end of the day, if you're going for something like we did, where you're throwing in a dedicated GPU and other larger components this is a great case that will fit it all. Note though that you should do your measurements first! This case is (as noted in the description) large. From the outer edge of the front foot pad to the back one is 13" (33.02 cm) so make sure you've the room for it.

5 out of 5 eggspretty nice

Pros: pretty well built in my opinion.

Cons: only cone is on e-atx boards you have to remove one of the fans by the mobos sata ports to gain access to them. aside from that, not worth knocking an egg off for.

Other Thoughts: Really nice overall.

1 out of 5 eggsIncredibly Angry

Pros: Not worth mentioning

Cons: See below

Other Thoughts: I never post reviews...NEVER. But I'm so angry with this product that I just had to. Despite the fact that this case does have some great features, I feel like it's got such a massive design flaw that pointing out anything else good or bad about the case is irrelevant. This product should not be sold, bottom line. The optical drive bay flaps are the most poorly thought out things I've ever seen. Right out of the box, my drives cannot open as the flaps get stuck. If you spend some time learning the mechanics, you realize that the contact point threshold required to successfully open the flaps 100% of the time is below the points of contact that are actually hitting the tray and therefore the flap gets stuck 100% of the time. Now what am I going to do? I've got to pay to send this back. I will never buy a Silverstone product again in my life. The next 4 HTPC builds I'm doing will be with other cases.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Case

Pros: Good Construction. Generous room inside the case for various setups

Cons: Limited mounting for liquid cooling solutions. I had to modify my setup a little to fit my cooler.

Other Thoughts: Overall I would recommend this case to others for htpc setups however make sure your av cabinet has adequate room and ventilation.

4 out of 5 eggsNeed Manufaturer's help

Pros: Beautiful case with a lot of room inside for MB, PS, HD, 2x Optical drives, tall fanless video cards like those 7850s you can't get anymore.

Cons: Optical drive door mechanism real pain in the * to adjust
Tight fit for cabling if MB has 90 degree SATA connecters
Tight fit between video card and drive cage

Other Thoughts: Exceptionally good looking case with a lot of interior space. Hopefully someone from Silverstone will contact me. I removed the optical drive doors because I couldn't get my drives to open/close. When I finally figured out adjustments I went to put them back on and one of the doors' hook to attach the spring broke off and I can't put the door back on and have it function because of that. I need to get a new drive door and the spring that goes along with it as that got damaged as well trying to reattach it.

4 out of 5 eggsClassy But Loud

Pros: This is a very sleek case.
The design on the inside is great.
It can hold ALOT of drives.
Fan positioning is optimal.
It can fit my GTX 550 TI.
It has an isolated Intake/Exit ports for the powersupply
Every intake has filters.
It runs off of a positive pressure system so it stays free of dust/lint

Cons: I wish the drive bay wasn't hidden, I have a nice blueray drive that is hid behind the drive flap. I wish the face was out. (This is not why it got 4 stars but just a quirk of mine)

The reason I gave it 4 start was because I thought it would be silent with the fans being under 18db each. However with all 4 running it is noticeably loud. I don't know if this is attributed to the air hitting the drives or thet fans themselves. I ordered some new Silex fans and if they are loud also then I'll attribute it to the case design.

Other Thoughts: Overall though, this is a really nice case and fits at home with my other devices.

5 out of 5 eggsOverall great HTPC case

Pros: For a HTPC case this thing has a lot of room for full sized video cards and also fits nicely in a home entertainment center looking like it is meant to be there.

Cons: It would be a very tight fit if you loaded this thing up with even a few 3.5" hard drives. I just use a 2.5" ssd above the DVD player and space is still fairly tight inside the case but that is to be expected with a HTPC case. Nature of the beast.

5 out of 5 eggsOne HTPC to Rule Them ALL!

Pros: Needed an HTPC case that could hold my 6 HDD movie collection (using Plex) and handle the space for a full size ATX mobo and an EVGA 660TI VGA card. This case is simply AWESOME!! It comes with three fans that pull cold air in. I added an 80mm exhaust fan because of the six 3.5 HDDs to help push the heat out. The case is high quality and fits my entertainment center, looking like an A/V receiver. The power led and HDD lights are dim and are barely noticeable when on. My system is as follows:
- GT 660 TI GRAPHICS CARD
GAMERS REPUBLIC MOBO (ATX)
I7 INTEL CPU (1ST GENERATION)
6 GIGS 1600 MEMORY
3 WD BLUE HARDDRIVES (3.5)
3 WD GREEN HARDDRIVES (3.5)

Everything fit, and I have room for one more 3.5 HDD if I ever need it. the case design and fans keeps the components cool. This case is what I think a STEAMBOX should be ( a gaming solution and an awesome media center!)

Cons: What cons? I wanted a HTPC case that could house all of my HDDs and full size mobo and video card, and look good doing it!

Other Thoughts: If you are using PLEX Media Server and have a few HDDs, this case was made for you.
