SilverStone RV05 Black Plastic outer shell, steel body Computer Case

The RAVEN RV05, the fifth edition in the exciting RAVEN enthusiasts chassis series continues the tradition of breaking and evolving the standards of desktop PC design. With a bold move that sees the removal of all 5.25" drive bays, the RAVEN team engineers again saw the opportunity to re-utilize the 90 degree rotated design.

Previous RAVEN models with 90-degree layout often had to compromise on space efficiency due to fixed length of the motherboard in rotated orientation. The elimination of 5.25" bays solves this issue naturally and enables RV05 to be even more balanced in terms of design than if the same were done to a traditionally-layout case. With most of the wasted space eliminated from RV05, engineers were thus able to better optimize the case for the most important performance-affecting components such as CPU and GPUs. The result is an expertly-engineered ATX chassis that is just as capable in terms of compute power and heat dissipation as the first RAVEN chassis, the RV01, but in half the size.

Equipped with latest revision Air Penetrator fans that include three speed switches and modern touches such as externally removable filters and tool-less panels, the RV05 has everything that PC enthusiasts could wish for in a compact, high performance computer case that is not only cool and quiet, but also easy to build and maintain. For those not wanting to constantly step up in case size to obtain top-level performance, the RAVEN RV05 is the perfect solution and it may also represent a glimpse into the future of mainstream enthusiasts PC design.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Case

Pros: There are plenty of pros for this case.
-Innovative layout of 90 degree rotated innards, makes for great cooling
-nice and compact compared to my previous Raidmax Agusta
-penetrator fans are amazingly quiet, even at full speed and move a ton of air
-dust filters
-the case looks amazing

Cons: Only two cons for that are really minor things
-if you want a disc drive you're gonna have to get a slim drive, but I don't use one anyway so not a big deal
-one of the fan speed switches was installed backwards I the case, so I just popped it apart and switched it around. again not a big deal

Other Thoughts: Routing the cables really isn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Maybe it's because of my experience with building computers, but I had mine put together and looking perfect in about an hour with no frustrations.

Also, the hard drive cage can be split in two so you can install one hard drive and still use a longer psu.

4 out of 5 eggsMaster of Air Flow

Pros: -Dual 180mm Fans
-Front Removable Filter
-90 Degree Motherboard
-Hinge Doors
-Unique Design

Cons: -Cable Management
-SSD Mount Locations
-Alot O Plastic
-Tight Space--Plan Ahead
-Has More Design Quality Than Actual Material Quality

Other Thoughts: Overall I really like this case. It had everything I was looking for: air flow (SLI), at least one 120mm exhaust mount (Corsair H80i GT), ability to run cables to the top of the case (90 degree mobo), and 2x SSD mounts.

There are some areas on the internals I would change: SSD mounts need to both be on top or bottom, motherboard tray design, no optical drive bay, and all of this would help improve the cable management behind the mobo. There are also areas where metal could have been used over plastic, and some of the metal needs to be reinforced (cough... mobo tray). No big deal, but you must realize you are paying for design on this case and not materials.

Now, there is one great cable management aspect of this case. Any cables that are located at the top of your motherboard can be stuffed in a pocket between the internal frame and the front plastic plate of the case, as there is a decent pocket of space.

4 out of 5 eggsCompact, excellent air flow, cool design

Pros: I love the 90 degree turned motherboard design. I am no engineer, but we know heat rises. have huge fans drawing cool air from the bottom and expelling out the top is common sense. However there is another benefit. Over the years ive seen my fair share of bent motherboards or video cards being torqued against gravity. Generally you have 1-2 screws at one end and a pci-e slot holding up a huge video card, over time it stresses the motherboard and video card PCB. with a 90 degree motherboard the video card can rest straight up and down with gravity instead of against it.

Excellent cable management for M-ATX boards, with a full ATX it can be a little cramped.

Cons: The case is smaller and flimsy compared to other cases in his price point or my old RV03. Very limited space for hard drives. two 3.5" drives two 2.5" drives on the back side of the motherboard. Its a clever use of space, but in my scenario it was the wrong case for my needs.

Other Thoughts: For my needs an Antec P280 would of been better suited. If your a gamer / overclocker looking for a compact high flow case, this is worth checking out.

I posted a video review of this on youtube if you want to see the unboxing and computer assembly.

4 out of 5 eggscheapest 90 degree case

Pros: If you want air and are like me and don't feel comfortable using water cooling then this is prob your best option in terms of price. With my mobo optimizing fans' flow and the strix gtx the hot air just rises and the case is quiet as a mouse. Cooler master 212 evo fits nicely and when mounted horizontally will complement this case's hear stack or heat rising effect.

Cons: My case's front usb 3's are a great feature except only one works.

The case is a tight squeeze so make sure you test your hdd's before you put them in bay or you'll have to disconnect power and reset from mobo so you can remove tray. (My HDD DOA)

Other Thoughts: A pull fan at the top next to input/output ports isn't necessary.

5 out of 5 eggsRaven RV05

Pros: Comes with a magnetic filter for the PSU vent.
- Bottom fan filter pulls out from the front.
- I personally like the 90 degree motherboard mounting.
- Comes with a rubber cover for the top I/O ports.
- Compact size even for ATX motherboards.

Cons: It's only my first day with the case, but:
- The side panels will take a little getting used to as far as removing them.
- Not sure about PSU length with the attached 3.5 inch drive cage.

Other Thoughts: I've had Raven cases before and this one goes back to the older series. Seems like the RV04 was a flop, so Silverstone did themselves good with this edition, IMHO.
Once my build is complete, I will do a follow up / edit of this review. Overall, for the price, if your considering it, do it...
