SilverStone RV05 Black Plastic outer shell, steel body Computer Case

The RAVEN RV05, the fifth edition in the exciting RAVEN enthusiasts chassis series continues the tradition of breaking and evolving the standards of desktop PC design. With a bold move that sees the removal of all 5.25" drive bays, the RAVEN team engineers again saw the opportunity to re-utilize the 90 degree rotated design.

Previous RAVEN models with 90-degree layout often had to compromise on space efficiency due to fixed length of the motherboard in rotated orientation. The elimination of 5.25" bays solves this issue naturally and enables RV05 to be even more balanced in terms of design than if the same were done to a traditionally-layout case. With most of the wasted space eliminated from RV05, engineers were thus able to better optimize the case for the most important performance-affecting components such as CPU and GPUs. The result is an expertly-engineered ATX chassis that is just as capable in terms of compute power and heat dissipation as the first RAVEN chassis, the RV01, but in half the size.

Equipped with latest revision Air Penetrator fans that include three speed switches and modern touches such as externally removable filters and tool-less panels, the RV05 has everything that PC enthusiasts could wish for in a compact, high performance computer case that is not only cool and quiet, but also easy to build and maintain. For those not wanting to constantly step up in case size to obtain top-level performance, the RAVEN RV05 is the perfect solution and it may also represent a glimpse into the future of mainstream enthusiasts PC design.

3 out of 5 eggsSuper-Cool However

Pros: Looks cool and great air-flow. Smaller than other Raven(s). Nice slide-out-no-tool Dust Filter. Easy to get into.

Cons: HDD space versus PSU. I went for a modular PSU, which is slightly too long for the (decent) HDD bays. No room on the very right makes extra large CPU heatsinks more complicated, but they fit.

Other Thoughts: Just needs some more room behind the Motherboard Tray for HDD Mount. Or; more vertical height. I am using an external enclosure for my HDD.
This makes a great long-time case. It gives the ability to fully strip and wash with ease. All the fans are replaceable.
Is superior to any other case for the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGood case

Pros: Cool case design. Heat dissipation layout is efficient. The penetrator fans work as advertised. Three speeds to choose low, med, and high. Don't connect them to your onboard mobo fan headers; use your power supply if you intend to adjust the fan speed. Black finish looks good.

Cons: Cable management is a bit tricky on the backside. I used a corsair hx750 W power supply and had to remove the optional drive tray to install it. Also, I had to remove the fan guard on the power supply to allow it to sit flush within the case; that's more of an issue with the hx750 fan guard having a convex curve. Not a big fan of panels not having thumbscrews, but the side panel clips seem sturdy enough. The material of the case doesn't seem as robust as other cases I've used. Potential buyers might consider buying an external cd/dvd drive if wanting an optical drive.

Other Thoughts: I built this for my son for Christmas. Personally, I like the look of the case. Very different from conventional horizontal mobo layouts. I've listed a lot of cons, but overall I'm pleased with the case. The temps with a hyper 212 are steady at 28 degress (cpu) and 30 (mobo). Been building since WIN 3.1 and the days of fdisk with DOS for installing OSs. Would recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsRV05

Pros: - Looks great (has a white led inside the pointed lip on the front)
- Stays cool with stock Air Penetrators
- Accepts a 120mm length radiator with a 120mm fan on each side.
- Removeable bottom and rear filters
- Easily accessable with quick release latches.
- Slim optical drive is isolated from other components

Cons: - Limited to 160mm length PSU if you want to use the hard drive bay. (Not stated on SilverStone's website)
- Cannot access the manual eject button on slim optical drive without taking the drive out.

Other Thoughts: I decided to get this case because I couldn't wait for the FT05 any longer and I had all the other components for my build. They have the same internals and looks didn't really matter to me. Just a note to anyone wanting to buy this, your PSU must be 160mm or less if you need the hard drive bay, if you PSU is over 160mm you must remove the hard drive bay. This is not stated anywhere but the user manual and required me to return my PSU and get a smaller one. You can replace the two 180mm fans for a radiator or if your cooler is 120mm long you can mount it in the top fan mount. Also don't make the mistake I did by putting the wrong disk in first because I had to unmount the optical drive to access the eject button, which isn't too hard because the drive is isolated and easy to get to but it was a hassle. The cable management was a breeze with the gap behind the motherboard and overall I would recommend this case highly.
