3 out of 5 eggsDoes not fit 19 inch rack

Pros: Nice low cost ($69) chassis. Light construction but my plan is for it to live in a rack.

Cons: The rack mounting brackets provided with this chassis are too wide. When installed they bring the width of the assy to 19 3/16 inches. This exceeds both the rack standard and iStars dimensioned drawing downloaded from their site. fortunately I am using rails to support the chassis but I still need the proper mounting brackets.

Other Thoughts: It is worth noting that I also purchased an IStar D-214-MATX, which is essentially the same chassis but with a different internal layout. The D-214-MATX shipped with different mounting brackets which when installed on either chassis fit the rack perfectly.. So iStar does know how to do it right.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great chassis, useful for a server / render farm setup. This case will only take micro atx, and although it has space for 4 drives will only fit 2 3.5" drives.

Cons: Some dis-assembly is required to install the fans / hard drives. This includes things like unscrewing housings and replacing grates, but is trivial in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well for live stage in rack

Pros: I'm using this in a different way than most people - I built a VST player/MIDI module (essentially a clone of a MUSE Receptor) using this as the foundation for a 2U rackmount case.

I combined this with a mATX board, a 4x20 LCD display in the external bay, and a SSD (given the potential for vibration). For my purposes, having the small power button on the front is perfect, and the bright light isn't a factor.

Also, given this is part of a 12U rack, I didn't need something made of extremely thick steel so the weight was perfect as well.

Didn't cut my fingers on anything, which is always a bonus after 25+ years of building PCs.

I'm using an EarthWatts PSU which vents to the rear but it's nice to have the vents cut out on the lid as well.

Cons: Nothing significant for my purpose.

This case is good if you want to build something and keep it that way, but I'm not sure it's durable enough to do it multiple times.

The HD bracket screws close to the case edge are tricky to remove and put back in.

5 out of 5 eggsneat little 2U case

Pros: Client needed a basic Pfsense box for a new office, this box fit the bill perfectly
looks great in their rack, everything fit nicely. The cut outs on the top are a nice added touch over the power supply so one can utilize a PSU with a larger fan. very solid feel for such a cheaply priced 2U case. did not notice any sharp edges to make ones hands look like hamburger after the build.
added a couple of very quiet fans up front which took less then 10 minutes..

Great case for the money

Cons: uhhmm shipping wasn't free? didn't make me coffee?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case at a great price

Pros: Perfect rack-mounted case for building a pfSense-based router. The price is great for a high quality case that can be mounted on a rack. No sharp edges anywhere and there is room inside to put hands to maneuver equipment in place comfortably. Being a Mac person, I absolutely appreciate a minimalist look all around without sacrificing aesthetics.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: Only one: Because of the location of the PSU and the motherboard I use, the additional four-pin power connector almost does not reach its place on the motherboard (MSI H67M-B43 [E3]). I'm inclined to believe that other boards may not have this issue though so I'm not taking any "eggs" off.
I will be getting another one like this to replace a 4U case housing one of my domain controllers.

4 out of 5 eggsFor the price, this is a 5 egg product.

Pros: Simple, all metal, lightweight yet sturdily constructed. For the price, I am quite satisfied!

Cons: I squeezed in an iStarUSA BPU-126-SA 5.25" hard disk cage. If they had a second external 5.25" opening you wouldn't be able to use it. I crammed all the loose wiring under the drive cage.

I had to remove the internal drive bays (left them out afterward), and fan mount before I could install the fans onto the mount then reinstall fan mount with attached fans. Maybe there could be a clip or something. Also, a foam dust filter would have been nice.

It does seem like the power supply is on the wrong side. My MB power just barely stretched, and I had to run out to the not-so-local computer shop for an ATX-12v cable extension.

Other Thoughts: Observe the location of power and fan connections on the MB you plan to install; buy a couple extensions. For the few dollars it might save you a second shipping charge or trip to your computer store (if they even carry something like that).

With the internal HD bays removed this seems to have great airflow. Went with the Thermaltake ISGC Fan 8 AF0043 recommended by someone else - my case did not come with fans.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case

Pros: This is a great small case. I used this to hold my homemade Megatouch that I built running 2011 ION software. Enough room for DVD, HD, MB and sister board. If you have a full size board it might be tight so plan ahead. No sharp edges and plenty of screws.

Cons: Non

5 out of 5 eggsFollow Up Review

Pros: I just want to write a follow-up to my previous review having now purchased many of these over the years.

Changes have been made from the first generation. Namely the fans have been removed (thankfully) and air vents have been added to the cover underneath where the power supply rests.

Instead of a 5.25 optical drive, I'm now adding a 5.25-to-2.5 hot-swappable drive bay.

The case remains nearly perfect largely in part due to its ability to accept a full-size power supply and use the stock CPU fan, BUT...

Cons: none!

Other Thoughts: ....for the next generation I'd like to see the following:

1. Interchangeable USB2 and USB3 front panel... I can choose which one to install.
2. Make one (possibly even both) of the HDD cages on the inside for 2.5 drives, I'm sick of buying adapters.
3. Four rubber feet for the bottom of the case. I'm using three of these at home (workstation, web development server and home server) stacked on top of each other, not in a rack. I LOVE that I can remove the handles on the side!
4. I'd still like something to cover the lights and the USB ports on the front (I have kids). A cheap piece of plastic that could slide from left to right would solve that.

In my humble opinion this remains the best chassis on Newegg. It's versatility and simplicity are what makes it so attractive for home use, but also for enterprise servers. Love it!

I'd love to see a version of this chassis designed for mini-ITX that was even smaller, removed the 5.25 bay, kept the full size power supply, only had room for one or two 2.5 drives, was not rack-mountable and had rubber feet.

4 out of 5 eggsideal

Pros: Small, affordable, 2RU case was perfect for my needs. It is simple to work with and offers somewhat flexible drive mounting options compared to other similar size cases.

Cons: see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Some complain of the loud front case fans. Mine did not ship with any which is fine since I planned to replace them anyway. A pair of Thermaltake ISGC Fan 8 AF0043 80mm worked out perfectly. There is very little room left with a Micro ATX board and depending on exactly where the connectors are you may have a difficult time with clearance when using a 3.5 inch hard drive. A right-angle SATA connector on at least one end might be required. I was forced to change the position of my drives from my desired because of this. I wanted them in a particular position for more clearance between the drives and the CPU cooler and for better placement behind the case fans. I have two 3.5 inch drives and one 2.5 inch SSD in a 3.5 adapter in this case.
