3 out of 5 eggsGood Fan Controller

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: Very good fan controller. Easy to install and easy to setup. The auto function works decent and plenty of cable length.

Cons: First off the construction is questionable. The metal blocks on the back are crooked and I feel the terminals could get pulled out easily. I was also disappointed that I got the beeping that everyone is talking about. It's pretty annoying and happens at least 4 times a week. It's so loud that it wakes my cat up every time and she freaks out. I have a feeling this is caused by a momentary drop in voltage and the controller thinks its one of the fans stopping so it sounds an alarm. I bet if they built in a time delay to a fan stoppage alarm it would stop this random occurrence. I am also not a fan of the pictures of the fans spinning. It serves no purposes and I think actually takes away from the looks of this. My last complaint is how 'dumb' the auto fan function is. It literally just senses temperature and adjusts accordingly.

Other Thoughts: I feel in addition to the temperature sensors the auto setting should also allow you to set the position of the fan in the case as well as it being positive or negative. If it knew all of this information I feel it would make smarter decisions on the rpm's of the fan. I am forced to run this on manual mode. Unfortunately even with all of the problems of this controller you will not be able to find a better one. It's sad that no company out there can build a solid controller with these features that;'s build with quality and longevity.

1 out of 5 eggsPretty, but useless...

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: Looks nice. Always impressed people who saw my rig.

Cons: This fan controller is completely useless. I initially purchased it a few years ago because I wanted a fan controller that could automatically adjust speeds for real-time temps. After installing the controller, it was immediately apparent that I wouldn't be able to use the automatic setting because the controller was reporting that all but one of my fans wasn't spinning, which in turn meant the alarm wouldn't stop beeping. Funny thing is, the fans were spinning just fine.

Here's the part that really upset me - I tried contacting NZXT's technical support to see if they could tell me how to fix it or to see if I could get a refund. I got a reply asking for further details, which I sent in. A few days later, I get another email saying they never received a reply, and would close my ticket in 24 hours if I didn't send the requested details. I replied AGAIN with the details they wanted. 24 hours later, I get a ticket closure notifcation. NZXT's technical support team COMPLETELY IGNORED ME. Judging from a lot of the other reviews (and NZXT's replies), I'd guess they were just letting tickets about this product die because they knew it was a dud and there was nothing to be done with it.

At any rate, after leaving the controller in my case for a couple of years for purely aesthetic reasons (as long as I kept it in manual mode, it seemed to work alright), it started constantly beeping. No error messages or anything, just that constant, shrieking *BEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEP*. So, I pulled the NZXT controller out of my case and dumped it in the trash, where it should have gone in the first place once I realized their tech support was just going to ignore me and I'd never have a chance at even getting a refund.

Other Thoughts: NZXT, in their replies to other similar reviews, has made the excuse that this was one of their first fan controllers, as if that makes it ok that this product was completely useless. An essential part of any company is the quality control department. There is no excuse for this product's poor performance. If NZXT did any sort of quality checks on these things, they should have known it was little more than a non-functional piece of eye candy.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT Customer

It would never be in our intention to deny service to any of our customers what I would recommend is connecting with us through our chat system. You can go to our support section at support.nzxt.com and the chat box will appear at the bottom right. Which we would go ahead and respond immediately to your issue with your fan controller. You can also contact us directly at +1-800-228-9395 which we would also be able to help you over the phone.

Kind regards,
NZXT Support.

3 out of 5 eggsEhhh its ok.

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: Adds cool factor to case (no puns).
Gives you an "at a glance" option for monitoring you temps. Controls fan speed.

Cons: Not well made. Locks up every so often.
Randomly starts beeping every 6-10 hours then stops, even though nothing is wrong.
Wires are too short to be able to get them where they need to be while keeping them tucked away.

Other Thoughts: I've had this running in a server for almost 5 years sitting in a closet. It has preformed it job well. I would give it a better rating if the cables were longer and that it wouldn't beep so much! But I just wanted a display that I could check the temps without having to log into the server.
If you buy this, I would suggest getting the biggest fastest fans that you can find. That way the controller will not need to spin the fans very fast and they will be almost silent.
I used 4 of these.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT Customer

We do appreciate the feed-back on the LX and thank you for being a loyal customer. Though if the fan controller has been sitting within the server for a while it would be a good idea to replace the LIR 2032 battery. Which can be found on the back of the controller on the PCB. If you have any issues or concerns please feel free to visit support.nzxt.com and submit a request. Also you can contact us directly at +1-800-228-9395.

Kind regards,
NZXT Support.

1 out of 5 eggsDangerous to buy - part 2

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: Looks great when it works

Cons: This unit has temporarily died multiple times now. (Shut itself off.) Power cycling the PC seemed to bring it back in line. However, when the unit would shut itself off, ALL THE FANS CONNECTED TO IT WOULD BE OFF TOO. This is a dangerous condition that could damage your PC, possibly even cause a fire under the right/wrong conditions.

I've been in contact with NZXT support, and while they tried to be very helpful, suggested I purchase a new battery for the unit (which I did, and subsequently installed) it made no difference. After 5 days without an issue, the unit died AGAIN, causing my PC to get quite hot. Brand new battery, didn't do a thing. (Except this time, the unit doesn't even come on again after a full power cycle, it's just dead, and had to be removed from the system.)

Other Thoughts: These units were not designed to allow your fans to operate with the unit off. When the unit's off, all your fans will shut down too, making it a very dangerous product to own. Buyer beware, purchase at your own risk.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT customer

We are sorry to hear the condition of your fan controller as it was one of our very first fan controllers that we came out with. We came a long way with our line of fan controllers to the sentry 2 and sentry 3 also the grid+. They are great products I would recommend for all of our customers who are migrating from the Sentry LX . I have gone ahead and sent you a link to a list of our newer fan controls for your convenience. Please if you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at 1-800-228-9395.

Kind regards,
NZXT Support.

1 out of 5 eggsNZXT FAN CONTROLLER SUCKS

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: BEAUTIFUL COSMETIC VIEW, IF IT DOES WHAT IS SAYS IT DOES........THAT WOULD BE GREAT TOO.

Cons: WATCH OUT FOLKS.......SHORT AND SWEET, THE CLOCK NEVER KEEPS TIME.......IT IS NOT "AUTOMATIC".....YOU HAVE TO ADJUST, AND RESET ALL THE TIME. HEY, THIS IS A COLORFUL AND FUN UNIT, BUT NOT PROFESSIONALLY BUILT.
YOU MUST CONSTANTLY "RESET" THIS UNIT OVER AND OVER AGAIN....THE CLOCK PROBLEM IS BECAUSE IT ISN'T CONNECTED TO UNIVERSAL TIME, LIKE YOUR COMPUTER..........SO YOUR CLOCK WILL ALWAYS BE OFF TIME.......AND YOU MUST RESET.......RESET.......LIKE TWICE A WEEK......WHY? CAUSE MY UNIT "JAMS:".........WON'T DO ANYTHING....WON'T MOVE....
I AM GOING TO PLAY WITH IT A LITTLE LONGER, THEN WHEN I GET TOTALLY FED UP WITH THIS PIECE OF JUNK, I'LL REMOVE IT.

Other Thoughts: if YOU ARE GETTING IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS COOL........AVOID BUYING IT, BECAUSE THAT'S ALL IT IS......"COLORFUL:"......IT DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT CONSTANT RESETS.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT Customer

We are thankful for the feed back and we appreciate you for purchasing our NZXT LX. What we can say about the time function is that it seems that the LIR2023 battery has died. Since the time on the fan controller keeps resetting it is not holding the accurate settings for the selected time. In turn usually when the date or time of a computer keeps resetting, It means that the CMOS battery is dying which can be replaced by purchasing it from a respected E-tailor or your public electronics store. The battery can be easily replaced by popping off the existing battery on the back side of your controller and switching the new battery in turn. Then should your time settings be able to stay without having to reset it constantly.

Kind regards,

NZXT Support.

1 out of 5 eggsGold-plated garbage

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: - It looks good
- the temperature probes seem to work
- Works great as a timer, telling you how long your computer has been powered on (with no Resets), if you do the math, subtracting its base setting of Jan 1, 12:00 PM from its current date/time (yes, I'm being sarcastic)

Cons: - Unreliable - I gave up on it after about 2 years, and had my motherboard control all my fans instead; this thing IS dangerous, as other reviewers have said, as it will suddenly stop working on you, not powering your fans
- Battery life - this thing is a vampire on the memory-back-up watch battery; you'll replace it a few times before you give up completely on having the date/time set, and your settings remembered
- Alarm sounding - because its unreliable and the battery drains fast, it always resets to the sound being on (and turning off the sound the LAST setting in the SET button's rotation (Year, Month, Day, Hour, Minute, Alarm ON/OFF)
- Poor position of Reset button - you will accidentally hit it trying to select a fan, at which point you lose Date/Time, fan settings, and the Alarm is back on
- Viewing angle - if the Sentry is not AT eye-level, it's not viewable. Currently, I have my tower up off the ground, so mine is at eye-level, but in the past, when my tower was on the floor, I could not read the screen while sitting next to it.
- 3-pin fans only (out-dated)

Other Thoughts: I can't believe they still make this!
I can't believe they get away with selling it at that price!
I can't believe people still buy it!

I got this device in August 2008, and nearly 6.5 years later, people are still reporting the exact same problems with it that I had. NZXT has clearly NOT made any efforts to fix nor improve it.

Listen to the bad reviews. They are accurate.

I felt so burned by the horrendous non-quality in the Sentry LX Fan Controller (my introduction to NZXT), that I've basically banned the company from all future consideration (perhaps they've improved their standards for their newer products in the last 6 years, but I'm not willing to find out). Although the fan controller is still in my case, largely because I don't have case panels to replace it and I don't want to leave a giant empty gap there (Sentry takes up 2 bay slots), I haven't trusted it with controlling my fans in over 4 years (because it was so unreliable at it) and it only has 3-pin headers, whereas my fans now have 4 pins.

My motherboard has been controlling the fans for the last 4 years, and my new motherboard is superior at doing that, with 4-pin headers. I basically only use the 5 thermal probes, though I don't fully trust their accuracy anyway. Last month, I completely pulled the battery (pointless; never worked) and the 5 fan control/power wires from their headers on the Sentry's board (they come out easily) because I never plan to use them again, and the wiring is taking up unnecessary space. The Sentry was all-show/no-delivery, basically gold-plated garbage. It's hard to forget experiences like that, especially when its your introduction to a company.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT Customer

We do apologize for the inconvenience, at this time we can confirm it was one of our very first independent fan controllers which would be able to control each fan independently. The battery has been known to die which could be replaced with another LIR 2032 battery which can be bought at your local electronics store. We over the years have made improvements to our newer fan controllers which have been able to correct issues of the past. We are thankful for your feedback and appreciate your feedback, We will take it into account with our PM team. If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at 1-800-228-9395.

Kind regards,
NZXT Support.

1 out of 5 eggsDANGEROUS - Do NOT buy this!

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: To be fair, this NZXT product looks awesome in my case. ...but that's about it. If you want a product that looks impressive, even if it's potentially hazardous to your rig, then look no further, this unit is for you.

Cons: 1. The display on the unit occasionally gets wonky - led segments randomly on or off. Hitting the Reset button "fixes" it. I see this happen once every few weeks.

2. The fan controller in "manual" mode is completely automatic, offering NO actual control. You can engage the per fan mode, and mess with the speed, and that works while the fan is selected for adjustment. Once you've made the adjustment, and resumed normal operation, it goes back to automatic... while in MANUAL MODE. So it doesn't work as advertised at ALL.

3. The unit has now SHUT COMPLETELY OFF on me TWO times. In both cases, I was playing a game, really pushing my PC (max settings) and didn't notice right away. Unfortunately, due to a very flawed design, when the unit shuts itself off, it NO LONGER allows power to go to any of the case fans hooked up to it. So your PC will overheat if you don't catch it, and stuff will get fried, plain and simple.

Other Thoughts: FAIR WARNING - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! This product is deeply flawed, and is in fact DANGEROUS if you have ANY interest in not frying everything in your PC. (See the shut off problem as cited in the "Cons") The unit I have isn't defective per se, it's just a flawed design. For being a fan controller, something so critical to the safety and proper operation of your PC that you'd THINK that in response to failure of the fan controller (temporary/glitched or otherwise) that it wouldn't cut off power to the fans - that they'd design it to simply allow FULLY power to go to the fans, applying resistance only to slow the fans down when operating properly, and defaulting to full power in the event of device failure. But they didn't design it correctly, so it's dangerous to have in your PC. Sure, maybe it'll work for you for a long time before it's an issue, but it only takes ONE time where you left your PC on overnight and it shut itself off for whatever reason that will permanently damage many (if not ALL) of your expensive PC's components. I got lucky and caught it in time. You might not be so lucky.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT Customer

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience at this time from the symptoms that you listed it does seem that the LIR 2023 battery. Which is a lithium battery which has most likely died thus is why it keeps shutting off and by hitting the reset button would it fix the issue. This battery can be replaced by either purchasing it from either Newegg or Amazon. Replacing the battery itself will resolve the random shutdowns and it automatically resetting your settings for the fan controller. If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to visit our website at www.nzxt.com/support/.

3 out of 5 eggsNice look but only useful as a monitor

This review is from: NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controller

Pros: * Adds an Upscale Look to the Computer
* Functions great as a fan-speed monitor only

Cons: * Beeps when a fan goes too low which it's set not to do!
* Useless time function - replacing batteries doesn't help!
* Hardware controlled, no software to "use" it.
* No USB controller, would have been nice!

Other Thoughts: Aesthetically speaking, this adds that "cool" factor to my computer which I wanted, but whoever programmed the hardware for this thing drank too much tampered eggnog. It never holds the time and after the first week of changing batteries I gave up on programming it each time. It beeps every so often just to let you know it can annoy you at random, and it sure would have been nice at this price for it to have been a touchscreen or at least have USB 3.0 Ports on the front. Ferrari looks with smart car performance.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, Valued NZXT Customer

We are pleased to hear that the NZXT LXE is working for you though if configured correctly the alarm can be disabled. Push the set button to get into the alarm option. Resume to push the set button to scroll through the other options. Within the variety of options should be the disable alarm settings option. The sentry lx will exit the temperature alarm setting mode after idling or at the end of the “SET” button scroll. The Sentry LXE was made to be an easy and simple fan controller for the end user all they would have to do is install it and attach the temperature probes. At this point they wouldn’t need to do much than just set the settings to automatic and let the fan controller do the rest. If you feel the fan controller is not functioning properly please feel free to submit at request at www.nzxt.com/support. We will also need an invoice on file if you wish to begin an RMA process or a parts replacement. If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to contact our support team at +1-800-228-9395.

Regards,
NZXT Support
