Pros: Low power. HDMI Audio. Linux compatibility. VDPAU hardware video acceleration.

Cons: Had to update the version of alsa so that hdmi audio would work

Other Thoughts: With Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and an updated alsa, everything is working great.

5 out of 5 eggsLow Budget, Easy Install, Great Motherboard!

Pros: This Board was so easy to install, It doesn't matter if you are using xp home or pro, or even windows vista. Just make sure you do a fresh install. You will have no problems if you know what you are doing. I paired this board with OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GHz and a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive and to power this unit I have an A-Power Pure Black 580W 20+4-pin ATX PSU w/SATA. This is my personal system for business.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I also built another computer using this same Gigabyte board for one of my clients. She is so excited and loves the way her new pc performs! I usually use MSI, But they have done me dirty in the past. One of their boards out of the many that I bought caught fire and they only wanted to replace the board, not the whole system. I wanted to try something different, and Gigabyte has earned my respect!

5 out of 5 eggsIf you are believing all these bad reviews read this

Pros: Tons of pros here. The on board video when using 800mhz ddr2 ram is blazing and only sucks 12 watts of energy. The hybrid VLSI is amazing for both power usage and speed. I'm really glad I thoroughly researched it on the NVIDIA website before I decided to go back to AMD.

Cons: Gigabyte tends to run a little fussy on their boards with timing so I haven't done alot of clockwork with it yet but I bought Gigabyte because this is what I'm running for a very long time and everyone else is similar in value to them but none of them have gigabytes wear like iron don't break proven to me durability.

Other Thoughts: Some of the people here aren't very good with computers. If you get blue screen just trying to swap this board for an existing 32 bit system you have to do windows repair installation or reload from scratch because it's going to need to do thing differently with ram addressing. If you have problems with the ethernet you have to turn modem off power up system and make sure the system is powered the first time before turning your modem back on or else it won't communicate. You have to do this with most newer ethernet chips. Once it's all going you don't have to worry about it but if you try to go back to using cable modem with an older ethernet you have to follow the power down the modem procedure to get it to work. I paired this with a duel core 4850e and 2 geil 2mb ddr2-800's. Runs 31 to 36 degrees c with OEM cooling and single 120mm fan blowing from side of case on cpu/gpu. The gpu/northbridge is 1 inch from cpu. So might be flaky with 135 quad core radiating 60 c heat all over it

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Disk Controller

Pros: RAID, nVidia GeForce 8200 chipset, HDMI v1.3. Seems like a good board.

Cons: The system will crash and flood the Windows event log with disk controller errors with my particular board. The system will immediately freeze and you're forced to do a hard reboot or shutdown.

Other Thoughts: I've seen a lot of complaints about this board and I took the risk. I hope my replacement works...

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Lots of features, DVI + HDMI. 6 SATA ports, etc

Cons: Compatibility with linux. You need the latest distributions to get 100% working drivers. Ubuntu 8.04 worked 95% of the time, but had distorted audio. Ubuntu 8.10 beta works flawlessly.

1 out of 5 eggsmany problems

Pros: Nice feature set.

Cons: Had one, DOA, RMA for replacement. Replacement fundamentally worked, or at least it would POST. Many problems with device drivers. NIC issues with Ubuntu Linux or Debian Linux. NVidia 8200 worked poorly under Linux.

Other Thoughts: On second RMA, replaced with an ASUS board with slightly reduced feature set, however it has worked flawlessly for the last couple months.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Motherboard

Pros: Cheap solution for a HDMI motherboard if it works.

Cons: I bought the ATX form and it never worked. I returned it and bought the micro form. I couldn't shut down the computer through Vista Home Premium (64 bit). If I push the power bush for 10 sec and main power would be off but USB ports are still active.
Also the rear audio output is not working.
Anybody have suggestions how to fix it?

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid this motherboard

Pros: It worked for a few months without errors.

Cons: The onboard video on this motherboard started to become
unstable about after two months. I get black or gray screen system crashes. The monitor will just turn gray or black and my system will not respond to anything. Control + Alt + Delete does nothing. I end up having to push the reset or power button and reboot to get my system to work
again. It happens every now and again while running any variety of programs but mainly with video games. I checked the event viewer and every time I get a crash it is linked to the onboard video card.

The system would run really unstable until I downloaded the latest software video drivers from Gigabyte. It runs better with the updated drivers but it did not solve the problem as I still get freeze ups. I will likely get a return merchandise authorization, but I am thinking of just buying a good video card. Hopefully this will solve the problem of the unstable onboard video card.

Other Thoughts: Reading through the reviews it looks like Gigabyte released a poor motherboard model with this one. I would avoid the Gigabyte GA-M78SM-S2H model if I were you unless you don't mind a faulty motherboard.

Using this motherboard with the following components and operating system:
Processor: AMD Athlon 4600+ Dual-Core (2.4 gigahertz)
Random Access Memory: 2 gigabytes PC2-6400
Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit

1 out of 5 eggsTwo board unstable

Pros: Small form factor
Decent integrated video which accelerates video playback
Supports many RAID levels
Solid-state capacitors
Low power consumption
Lots of SATA ports

Cons: Board seems to be inherently unstable.

Other Thoughts: The original board was unstable doing anything 3D or directX related. I swapped out every component and tried every conceivable OS and driver. I eventually RMAed the board. The second one exhibited the same symptoms. It was unstable doing XP and Vista installs and refused to any amount of 3D or directX without crashing. Based on other comments, I believe this board has inherent problems. I returned this motherboard and went for the AMD counterpart, a 780g board. So far, the 780g has fared much better.
