An HTPC should run as quietly and efficiently as possible to minimize noise and distraction from the movie, video or music. The GA-EG45M-DS2H motherboard from Gigabyte has advanced technologies to do just that. The board has dynamic 4 gear power switching, so when your system needs more power it gets it . . . and when the power load goes down, so does the supplied power. Less power means less heat and then the fans don't have to work as hard.

Integrated into the system are an Intel GMA x4500HD graphics sub-system with support for DX10, Intel Clear Video and full hardware HD decoding. Video outputs through your choice of a DVI or HDMI port. Sound is not forgotten with Dolby Home Theater sound and a Realtek 8 channel audio chipset.

Just because it is an HTPC doesn't mean that durability and security are unimportant. Gigabyte's DualBIOS system has a second BIOS chip on the motherboard for quick and painless recovery from crashes and viruses. They also built the motherboard with all conductive polymer aluminum solid capacitors for increased longevity and power efficiency. An Ultra TPM module keeps your data as safe as your system.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: onboard interface options,

Cons: poor driver implementation. Just not a robust a easily configurable display driver set (HDMI and VGA reso's in my case).

Finally got it sorted but the resolution settings would not stay when setting the primary display and the secondary. Not a dedicated display cards capability obviously.

Other Thoughts: Great board.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT USE FOR HDMI MEDIA SERVER

Pros: Easy to configure, install, and setup.

Cons: However, it does not work as a 1080 DVI / HDMI Media Server. If this is your intended application, I would suggest that you should choose the Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard. I also used 2x2GB Crucial RAM, Pentium 2.2GHz Dual Core, Samsung 1TB 7200RPM SATA, Lite-On Blu-ray (use the retail version as the OEM does not have installation instructions or required software) and the eDATA DEC-200B Vista Certified IR Remote controller, all packaged in the Rosewill R379-SM case. Great Media Server solution. Also remember to order Molex to SATA 15 pin power cord (2 SATA Power cords required, but case only comes with 1)

Other Thoughts: NewEgg is an absolutely fantastic vendor to work with. They really stand behind the products they sell and allowed me to not only return the original mobo for a replacement, but when the replacement did not work also allowed me to exchange it for the NVIDIA GeForce version without any fuss. I wish I could also say about GIGABYTE, whose support was at best atrocious - with a 3 day turnaround for Emailed questions without even answering them. I am totally won over as a Newegg customer.

1 out of 5 eggsWhere's the UD2H

Pros: The board we are all looking for instead (with 2.0 PCIe x16) is the Ultra 3 version.....no one sells yet.
Model = EG45M-UD2H
Also sports the extra copper linings for cooler surface area, dual Bios, Esata, HDMI, etc.

Cons: Can't get it.

1 out of 5 eggscheated over mail in rebate

Pros: works great, but...

Cons: they advertise $20 mail-in rebate never materialized. Legally there is no grievance process, so legally I'm helpless.

At the same order I ordered a PS with mail-in rebate and received a confirmation email 3 weeks from that manufacuter 3 weeks ago (no check yet either). but no notice from Gigabyte.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from that mail-in fraud. It either takes forever, or you never get anything. Only accept instant rebates.
Maybe boucott manufacturer that do mail-in in the first place. they just want my address data and sell it htne (without ever giving me my rebate)

1 out of 5 eggsnever received the rebate check

Pros: good board runs stable at 1333 FSB.

Cons: they offered it with a $20 mail-in rebate. but that never happened. I sent them the papers a month ago and never heard back.
in my opinion fraud....
From my other hardware I ordered at the same time I at least received an email about the rebate two weeks ago (no check yet either, though)

Other Thoughts: if you pick hardware by price and discounts, only accept the discounts you get instantly. That mail-in stuff is unreliable. Especially since they don't allow you any way of tracking where it went. It still is a good board, but the fraud annoys me off to have fallen for that.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC Board

Pros: Well this is a great motherboard for HTPC's. I bought it for that reason and so far its great. It gives you 3 options for video out (but most people will use HDMI or DVI). I read some people had issues with full 1920x1080 resolution, well I had no issues. Worked great for me, and looked great on my 42". Its got everything I need on board

Cons: Now, this is the reason I gave it 4 outta 5 eggs, but id DEFINITLY buy this board again.

1) Im running a 15" touch screen on my VGA port and using HDMI out to my 42". I basically control media center with the touch screen. Now... if i do "extended displays" i can pick different resolutions, great. Problem is, i need to cloan, and when I use cloan, my HDTV only gets a 1024x768 max resolution, well that kinda sucks. Videos still look great, but they are not that FULL SCALE quality nor do they take up the entire screen.

2) For some reason, everytime i reboot my PC, the audio stops working and i have to open the control panel, click something and it starts working, very strange (using Optical audio out, my receiver doesnt support HDMI audio, its passthrough only).

Other Thoughts: Besides the above two things, the chipset does get hot, but... not something id mark down as a problem. Its quiet, has everything you need on board, and unless you are doing something fancy like me, works great. Even if your doing what i did, it still works, ALL RIGHT, but im still craving for my full resolution. My fix might be to install some cheap-p PCI video card just to output it to the touch screen... but we'll see how intels drivers handle that, kinda "bleh" as far as im concerned using intel, im an ATI fan myself.

4 out of 5 eggsFix for the resolution issue

Pros: I love everything about this board now that I figured out how to fix the low resolution issue with HDMI out.

Cons: Having to low resolution options with HDMI out, which is why I bought this mobo in the first place!

Other Thoughts: First go to the Gigabyte product page and update to the latest video drivers they have. Restart your pc and head over to intel's page to grab the latest G45 driver there. Install that one, restart and BAM! Tons of res options, including 1080! =P

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but no Blu-Ray

Pros: I purchased this board to build a HTPC with my kids. Setup is easy, very nice board. DVD quality is excellent, surround sound is absolutely fantastic.

I have used Gigabyte boards in multiple builds now, and love their products, they have proven to be very stable. I have beaten up on the ICH9R chipset extensively and have a great deal of confidence in it wrt RAID, I am sure ICH10R will be equally as stable.

Cons: I have downloaded and installed all the latest drivers, including graphics drivers from Intel, and the latest version of PowerDVD Ultra. I can not get Blu-Ray to play, and Gigabyte support is useless.

This is the first time I have attempted to use Gigabyte support, and am now learning how s - l - o - w their support is. Support has suggested that I should be able to view Blu-Ray, but I think I have proven that I can't, and they can not give me a good reason why I am having trouble, so I have to take 2 eggs off my rating based on what appears to be their lack of knowledge regarding their own product.

Other Thoughts: The product description "full hardware HD decoding" is somewhat misleading in my opinion. If you don't care about Blu-Ray, this board is excellent.

Drivers that came with the board when I bought it supported only one very low resolution through HDMI, downloading the latest drivers fixed it, updating drivers is a must.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome board with weak heatsink QC

Pros: One of the best boards out there for HTPC purposes. The built-in video offloads much of the processing of HD video from the CPU. Well built (for the most part - see cons) and tiny. Very pleased.

Cons: One huge con, which would explain all the DOA and buggy reviews from others. The northbridge heatsink is attached to the board by a LOUSY thermal paste that arrived dried and cracked. This most likely explains all the DOA reviews.

The solution is really simple: Just remove the sink, scrape off the dried thermal paste and apply a small amount of MX2 (or ASilver5). That's it.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte needs to review their manufacturing procedures in this one small area (spring loaded heatsink/paste), but thankfully the solution is simple.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's good

Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: Both CPU and case fans have 4 pins.
Somewhat slow in booting process.
I had to set bios for USB mouse.

Other Thoughts: I replaced this MB from Axxx w/ similar options but this MB controls in quiet processing.
