So far, so good...
- Pros: Great motherboard. Upgraded from the GA-MA78GM-S2H, and I'm very pleased with this new mobo. Good control over CPU clocking and voltages, great control over the memory timings... all from either within CMOS setup, or using software tools provided by Gigabyte. Running Win7 x64 without any driver issues. Using Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition, and a kit of 2x2gb GSkill Trident DDR3 2000. Processor running excellent, especially with the unlocked multiplier. Memory ran stock at 1333, but simple change in CMOS put it at 1600.
- Cons: I have two issues with the SATA ports, but I was expecting these issues. You may notice by looking at the pictures that the SATA ports will be directly under a large video card (like the BFG nVidia GTX 285). The only kind of cable that can fit under the video card are the ones that are L-shaped. Unfortunately, if you were to use "standard" L-shaped cables (like the ones provided with mobo), they would "run into eachother" if you had more than two connected. In fact, all 5 ports face inwards towards eachother, if using "standard" L-shaped SATA cables. SOLUTION: Buy "Left-Angle" SATA cables! They are L-Shaped the exact opposite way, and therefore all 5 point away from eachother, and fit perfectly under my huge video card!
- Other Thoughts: I can't comment on overclocking, but I can again tell you that the CMOS setup utility gives you great control over nearly every aspect of the speeds, multipliers, and voltages of your CPU, NB, PCIe, and DDR3. Go download the PDF manual from Gigabyte's website if you want a detailed look at the CMOS setup.
JURY IS OUT
- Pros: This is my second GIGABYTE M/B. The first was built up a year ago and was a dream to set up. It is functioning well and I am very happy with it. That was why I selected this board for a new build with an AMD 720 CPU and DDR-3 ram.
- Cons: This board was (honestly) a P.I.T.A. to get to load the Windows Vista operating system. Strangely, a friend building a different GIGABYTE M/B computer at the same time had the same problem. His would load XP, but not WINDOWS 7. Turns out, after spending a couple days dinking with it, that the BIOS had to be updated (although specs affirmed the F1 it came with was for the AMD 720 CPU.
- Other Thoughts: Even with the wasted time, I am still a follower of GIGABYTE (unless this happens in the future again). I believe the bad-mouthing of the GIGABYTE support is misdirected as I spent a whole lot less time hanging on the phone than with other support sources.
Defective, not much support
- Pros: *It has many great features.
*It's a Gigabyte. *Paired with memory and CPU, passed Memtest 15 times on stock settings with no errors. *Good value and no goofy rebates.
- Cons: *IDE controller appears to be defective. Unit worked sporadically when in Native IDE mode, and would not recognize SATA drives when in AHCI or RAID mode. The system would work fine when an old IDE driver was plugged in (but not being used actively). Other Newegg users have reported similar problems with other MA785G boards.
*Could not install Windows XP, but was able (after much work) to install Windows 7 Upgrade w/out the XP installed. *Tech support took 5 days to responding to my request, then simply told me to RMA the unit (understandable business policy, though frustrating as the customer). *Mounts for the north & south bridge heat sinks are loose. *RAM mounts feel cheap.
- Other Thoughts: This is my third Gigabyte Mobo, and the first two were great. I wish I could talk about all the cool features, but this build has been very frustrating. I like the features of the board enough to RMA for a replacement rather than returning for something else - lots of potential in the mobo - hope the next one works. (Similar ASUS AMD785 models have similar ratings and issues - could be a chipsets issue.)
I tried to find help at the Eggxpert A+ Hardware Support forums, but have yet to receive a reply. *Athlon x2 250 (pins are a pain) *G.Skill F3-128000CL9D-4GBNQ
