Pros: This board works great and has been running fine for more than 2 months. Windows 7-64, Ubuntu 9.10 64. I have all 4 memory slots populated with 8GB (4 x 2gb) of Corsair DDR3 Dual Channel PC1600 XMS CMD8GX3M4A1600C8. XFX Radeon HD5850 graphics, Intel I7-860 processor. 2 500gb hitachi deskstars in RAID 0 striped system drive configuration, 1 2TB Hitachi deskstar JBOD as a backup data drive. 1 250gb 2.5" Hitachi drive JBOD for UBUNTU 9.10 64.
Cons: Some of the gigabyte supplied utilities are kind of lame and hokey and I just don't use them. They put their brand on Intel Matrix raid and call it Gigabyte XHD or something like that. I would have preferred that they just left it as Intel Matrix Raid. I use the intel raid utility instead of theirs in windows. Yes I do find the 6 memory slot configuration kind of odd. If you use 6 modules 2 of them can be double sided and the other 4 must be single sided... what the heck is that? go figure? I have 4 double sided modules installed and it works just fine. 6 double sided modules would have been better.
Other Thoughts: Great quality

Very Disappointing Motherboard! This Thing is Horrible!

Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It has 6 memory slots. I bought the Dominator 12 GB module kit which is 6 2GB sticks. Seems a perfect match-6 sticks of memory to fill 6 slots-what could go wrong? Turns out it only works with 4 sticks (8GB). The reason is that you can only use all 6 slots provided your memory sticks are 4 single sided and 2 double sided. According to Corsair's RAMGuy, they are all double sided sticks as are most 2GB memory sticks made today. You can use up to 4 double sided sticks in any combination in all the slots--just not 6 all at once.
The memory is fine as I verified this by switching them around swapping them with working slots verses non working ones. All 6 slots work, just not with all of them filled with double sided memory. How do you know if the memory you are buying is single or double sided? I could not find any specs listing this little tidbit of info anywhere about any memory from any manufacturer anywhere. So why did Gigabyte even go with this little gem of an idea in its board?
Cons: Basically this is a motherboard with only 4 memory slots. The 2 extra slots are useless! I would guess that the extra 2 slots are there to give the appearance of this being a more capable board than what it really is. With Intel's i7, to get the maximum performance from memory, you need to have all sticks be identically matched electrically. I don't know how this would be possible with 2 double sided and 4 single sided sticks as they'd be electrically different from each other.
With USB 3 you can actually have a computer that isn't obsolete by the time it's put together. USB 3 devices aren't even available yet, so you'd be well ahead of the game since this board has it when they do become available. Turns out if you use 2 PCI Express x16 video cards in SLI mode, USB 3 no longer works and both cards will operate in PCI Express x8. Apparently it's too much bandwidth for the board to handle. So why even bother?
Other Thoughts: If you want to use one of this boards supposedly impressive "features" and another one becomes disabled in the process--what's the point? They need to rethink this seriously flawed and incapable board.
The board shipped to me with F3 BIOS. Windows 7 crashed ALL the time. So I updated it to F6 BIOS and it hasn't crashed since. The board is advertised as being Windows 7 compatible so why doesn't it ship with the updated BIOS? Be careful if you do a BIOS update because Gigabyte says that if you update the BIOS and this causes the motherboard to fail, they won't cover it under warranty. Now that is one sweet SCAM!
To sum it all up: I would not recommend this motherboard to anyone. If you want a board where you can actually use all 6 memory slots, USB 3, and 2 video cards at full data transfer, all at the same time, go with another board or better yet, go with another brand.
Thank you for your comments. Your memory configuration, USB3.0 and PCI-E bandwidth issue are all due to the P55 chipset limitation. The allowed configurations are addressed in the User Maual. For further information, you may contact us at http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/support/servicecenter.aspx

Impressed! It’s “FAST”!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Nicely constructed board, use quality components, works the way I want for my PC to work....It’s “FAST”.
Cons: Nothing I can think of yet.
Other Thoughts: Just bought this board to replace my old one (from a combo deal type of thing) and this one is great. It’s easy to install, took me less than 10 minutes to get it into the case and ready for me install Windows 7. I have 2 Seagate SATA3 2 terabyte drives and configure them to run as RAID 0 and it runs really smooth and very responsive….I click on an icon and it opens up right away, no lag or delay feeling, SATA3 rocks! This is my 1st Gigabyte board and I am happy with it.
