1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: + Looks great

Cons: - Board was DOA, and confirmed by Gigabyte support. More info in other thoughts

Other Thoughts: OK. I really, REALLY, wanted to like this board, and give Gigabyte one final try. Needless to say, it didn't go as plan. First a bit of backstory. I have ran Gigabyte since my first true build. However, I started getting a little bit of a bad taste for them starting with my first Gigabyte graphics card, the 6870. The card failed after a month of use, and their RMA department did not want to accept the return on the card. They were fighting, stating that Newegg would allow for an RMA directly, and that I needed to attempt to get a replacement that way. That would be fine, except that Newegg told me I needed to RMA it back to the manufacturer. After emailing them a copy of the email stating this, I was finally able to get a replacement. Strike one.

My next build was another Gigabyte-based build. First, the graphics card, the 7970 GHz edition, had a voltage lock that could not be bypassed. Then, when I received the board, it was DOA, and the tech I talked to from Gigabyte about this was unbelievably lacking in knowledge. He initially said that it was because my processor was incompatible. However, it was posting. It was just failing on the PCI initialization. I confirmed it was the board by swapping in my old 1055T, and it continued to fail. Finally, after escalating the issue, I was able to get an RMA. Strike two.

With this board, I wanted to give them one final chance. I saw the "server-grade testing" that they said each board went through, and thought that this would be a great board. It should be reliable, and it will be great. Opened the box to see the "certification letter" front and center. Great sign. Built the machine out of the case, powered it on, and nothing. No screen what-so-ever. Went through the typical diagnosing, and it just refused to post. Called customer support, and they were completely clueless again. They told me that it had to be my processor. Again, I told them that everything benched fine on another system. Fought for about an hour to finally confirm that the board was DOA. With this board, I was able to get a refund from Newegg. Bought an Asus board and worked perfectly fine.

I know that DOAs can happen on any piece of hardware, but with the sheer number of issues I have had these past couple of years with Gigabyte products, it is obvious that they have a QA problem. I gave them three chances, but each one they came up short. I will not be purchasing Gigabyte for any of my equipment again. This is disappointing. Visually, their boards are phenomenal, and the layout is nearly perfect. But the sheer number of DOAs is unacceptable.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Motherboard (except for unnecessary Value Engineering)

Pros: Booted the first time with Samsung SM-851 M.2 SSD after installing F7 BIOS (came with F6). Classic BIOS almost make sense. Hope the 168 hours of burn-in produces a high reliability product.

Cons: 1) M.2 socket specifications are incomplete. It should be specified as a M.2 x2 Socket to indicate it only has 2 Data Lanes. Bought a Addionics M2 PCIe SSD - PCIe 3.0 4-Lane Adapter to achieve maximum Disk Speeds with a Samsung SM-951 (MZHPV256HDGL-00000) M.2 AHCI M.2 SSD. This nearly doubled CrystalDiskMark speeds.

2) The last several GigaByte Motherboards I have purchased are examples of excessive "Value-Engineering". The 8.86" Dimension of the board should be more like 9.6". Reducing this dimension eliminates the Front Three Mounting Holes. I prefer motherboards be restrained from flexing where the large 24-pin connector and others attach. I suppose eliminating this 3/4" of PCB this allowed GigaByte the $$ to add the silly Audio Isolation "Barrier" LED's. On a motherboard marketed towards High Reliability I'd rather the $$ be put in making a sturdy motherboard and not eliminating mounting points.

5 out of 5 eggsFirstboot champion!

Pros: -Great build quality overall- feels durable as this line of mobos SHOULD
-Not a super large board, but the space and placement is used very well to allow large CPU coolers and watercooler fan expansions.
-Awesome orange lights that go into your GPU(s)!!!!!!1
-Overclockability is childs play

Cons: Not really any cons - just annoyances that dont deserve to lose an egg.

-SATA ports coming out of the side of the board- I understand why, and maybe Im just learning to conform but this was a bit annoying
-Heatsink at the very top of the board above the CPU is quite flimsy, be careful as it is NOT A load bearing structure even in the slightest way
-Plastic padding on the back bracket for inputs had to go- it was requiring too much force to make my board screws line up.

Other Thoughts: Excellent board for the price, you sacrifice power from SLI with the PCIE lanes, but who can even really tell the difference.

If you believe PCIE X4/8/16 is really a big issue then buy the UD3H- I preferred this one due to reviews and seemingly better reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid as a rock

Pros: Black matte finish, great variety of expansion slots, M.2 slot, durability testing, onboard sound is stellar, heatsinks keep everything cool, zero compatibility issues

Cons: There are some trade-offs when using M.2 PCIe or SATA-Express, but you can't have everything. These weren't issues for me.

Other Thoughts: Bought this board as part of a newegg combo and I am very happy with the resulting build:

Intel Core i5-4690k Devil's Canyon CPU
2x4gig HyperX Fury DDR3 1600
WD Blue 1-TB HDD
Rosewill Valens-600 power supply
Antec GX500 Illusion case

I later added an Intel M.2 SSD, an EVGA Ge-Force 750 Ti GPU, and 8 gigs of additional DDR3 and everything works without any problems.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Midrange Z97 So Far

Pros: Two PCIe 3.0 slots with two usable PCIe 1x slots

Love the black & yellow

PCI slot if that is your sort of thing

Cons: 1990s called and wants its PCI slot back
Bottom PCIe 2.0 16x slot is useless if you need 1x slots, and I do

Not digital power like the UD5H, just doubled VRMs

PCIe 3.0 4X M.2 SSD will require loss of 2nd 3.0 slot and a ~$30 adapter, negating the price savings vs the comparable board with an "Ultra" M.2 adapter.

Other Thoughts: Got this for the weeklong burn-in of the black series, board came up with no issues.

Newegg sent me a rev 1.1 actually, the fact I only discovered while the F7 1.0 bios was updating, but AFAICT the only difference between the 1.1 and 1.0 is cool LEDs on the audio area (which is how I first saw this was really a 1.1 board) so no harm I guess.

5 out of 5 eggsShould've never left Gigabyte.

Pros: 168 hours of testing before shipping. Everything works right out of the box. Looks sleek. BIOS has many different options (graphics, old style, etc). High quality construction. Included SATA cables come sleeved.

Cons: Other motherboards at this price point have power, reset, and clear CMOS buttons on the motherboard. A minor knit.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy with my purchase

Pros: Somewhere in the early 2000's I switched over to only purchasing Gigabyte boards because I'd come to expect a certain level of quality control and feature sets that suited my needs.

I bought this board specifically because of the 168 hour durability test (on top of the feature set I required) because the last thing I want to deal with when putting together a new system is a DOA motherboard. I've had that happen in the past and it's a pain to troubleshoot and a huge waste of my time to engage in the RMA process. So far this board has been as solid and stable as any I've ever used and has all the OC'ing features I could ever ask for.

I could have purchased several boards with the same feature sets for 20 to 30 dollars cheaper but knowing this board has been tested extensively brought a peace of mind that made this purchase quite easy. This Black edition board also came with a membership to the Gigabyte black club, which extended the warranty to 5 years, which is nice to have although I hope to never have to use it.

Cons: The bios has a couple different "modes" for accessing advanced settings and you have to figure out which best suits your tastes. Not a huge a negative but something a new owner my find perplexing the first time he or she attempts to access the more advanced bios settings.

4 out of 5 eggsAs promised, fast & works

Pros: Easy bios, easy setup, clearly labelled ports. Fast, easy setup.

Cons: Two extremely minor nitpicks are that that SATA connectors are going to end up buried underneath your video card if you have a long one and the front end connector is (as usual) super tiny and impossible to read. A third party block connector for case stuff would've been.

1 out of 5 eggsBroken

Pros: Not DOA enough to have to RMA it.

Cons: USB 3.0 packaged driver and the website driver cause instability in mumble client on a clean windows 7 install, as well as static and popping in voice audio rendering me broken and unreadable. The USB 3.0 is wholly unusable on this board as removing the driver cleared up ALL of the issues. The whole act of trouble shooting cost me about three days, a lot of stress, data loss, the works.

Heatsinks on the mainboard are attached by the lowest bidder and nearly ripped off while installing the board.

The BIOS also likes to freeze up on entry every so often, yes, my system is stable.

Doesn't like to boot up or shut down with any kind of usb drive attached.

Other Thoughts: First gigabyte board I'm unhappy with. I use this brand exclusively for system building and have always recommended them but no more. Rig was built for starcitizen and I'll be directing our 1,200+ org members, many of which are also upgrading, to other brands.

2 out of 5 eggsBroken USB 3.0, First time unhappy

Pros: Its not fully broken.

Cons: *Heatsinks are attached by the lowest bidder with plastic tabs and springs.
*USB 3.0 is absolutely useless. Both the packaged driver and lastest website driver, 3.0.0.16? interfere with USB 2.0 and other parts of the system. It causes instability in VOIP programs, and so much crackling and popping in my voice that I'm broken and unreadable. Problems ceased when I removed the driver, however, this means all my USB 3.0 ports default to USB2.0 speeds.

This whole nightmare of troubleshooting cost me about 3-4 days of wasted time, multiple formats, data loss, and a stress ulcer.

Other Thoughts: I used to use Giga-byte boards exclusively for all system I build and recommend them furiously because there was a time when they were rock solid and trouble free, but I guess that time is passed. Given I built this rig for star citizen and there are over 1,000 people in our organization, many of whom are upgrading as well, word travels fast when something stinks. This is the first time in years that I've managed to be unhappy with a component.

I'll be using a different brand when I upgrade again. Thankfully I didn't get a Gigabyte GTX 980 and stuck with EVGA.
