5 out of 5 eggsUpdate review

Pros: After a few minor settling in issues I have found this board to be rock solid and problem free.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My initial rating was three or four eggs but after having this board up and running for several months now I feel it deserves a full five egg rating.

5 out of 5 eggsPleased overall

Pros: This board has performed well and proven reliable unlike numerous other brands I have worked with.

Cons: The BIOS is a little scattered feeling; it takes a while to find what you are looking for. It could have used more fan headers.

Other Thoughts: The OC feature seems to work fine, but sets up overclocking in a way that is very power wasteful when the machine is idling. Instead, I manually changed the turbo clock settings to allow the processor to overclock when it needs to and that has worked very well while keeping power usage (and heat!) low when the machine is idle.

2 out of 5 eggsPCI-E woes

Pros: Pretty to look at.

Cons: No video to the top two PCI-E slots, even after upating BIOS. Tried RMA CPU and GPUs. Still nothing.

Other Thoughts: This is the second motherboard to have this issue. Very frustrating.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable product, Non-existent customer service

Pros: Good looking products that work pretty well, until they fail.

Cons: Have had an MSI video card and Motherboard give up on me, both within 3 years of purchase. MSI agreed that the products were defective but told me they have no way to repair or replace my products. I was advised to search an online auction site for replacements.

Other Thoughts: Even though I offered to pay for repair or replacement I wasn't able to get either. I expect my components to last more than three years, and, when they don't, I expect the manufacturer to at least make an effort to help me. I will be staying away from MSI from here on out. I now consider them bottom of the barrel.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued MSI Customer,
“Please contact MSI customer service representative Vivien at, or call Vivien at 626-913-0828 ext 199 with your case details. Thank you.”
Best Regards,
Customer Service Team

2 out of 5 eggsDecent Board, Bad Customer Service

Pros: Two onboard nics, decent onboard sound, board seems to be durable so far.

Cons: Not a very good board for Linux. I had problems with the NICs when using Debian Squeeze, and on both Debian and Fedora 15 the sound card doesn't output to the correct jacks for my 5.1 speakers. The biggest Linux problem is the IRQ #17 error that comes up after a while, after which the system becomes to slow to use, this happened on Fedora and Debian (I worked around it by adding noirqdebug to the boot options, but this seems to prevent the computer from suspending correctly).
Due to the fact that I have two 6000 series Radeon cards, I cannot access any of the PCI slots.
The graphical UEFI is very irritating. I find it completely unnecessary, and hard to use.
The wake on alarm option isn't very clear, specifically on setting the date. I figured out that you can leave it at 0 to get an alarm every day.
Could not get my 2133 ram to get to 2133, had to leave it clocked slower.

Other Thoughts: This board was supposed to have a $30 rebate on it. I mailed in all the required items (including the UPC code and a copy of said UPC) but eventually I received an email from MSI stating that I did not send either the UPC or its copy in. I emailed their customer service email provided, but over two weeks later have not heard from them, nor have I heard from Newegg, who I requested contact MSI on my behalf.
I recognize that at this point I am unlikely to get my rebate - bad enough given that I am on a college student's budget - but what really bugs me is the TOTAL lack of response on the issue from MSI.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking well

Pros: This is my first build and the MB is working as advertised. The user guide is clear, I did not have any problems with putting the whole system together. I have overclocked it for over a week now and it is running at 4.20. No problems atm.

Cons: Built in GPU support not as clear as it could be.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdating using Live Update 5

Pros: I just thought I would add an additional review to address the guy who thinks he needs to pay for driver updates. Your just using the applet wrong. I was having some issues and I would download the individual drivers and load them independently. Then I had the LiveUpdate5 app open and I clicked Manual MB Driver Scan and then instead of the larger Download button in the lower Rt corner I used the 2nd button in fron the Rt in the same row as the driver you want to download and install. It has an arrow pointing downword, you click on those independently and it will download and install the driver properly. Then just repeat process for each driver you want to update.

Cons: Then instead of paying the Driver Update Service you send me a check :-) But seriously, it does work just fine if you don't try to do it all at once with the "Main" Download" and "Scan" buttons. Use the "Download and Install" button in the specific row with the driver you need. Works very well.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes you gotta experiment and work it out, I have had this board since the DAY it was released and it has been a SOLID PERFORMER. This has been me first MSI board having been a Gigabyte and ASUS user, I would still use either of those boards and now I am happy with MSI as well.

2 out of 5 eggsPay to get drivers?!

Pros: This is a high end, feature rich motherboard built with quality components.

Cons: MSI provides a utility (Live Update) to update your BIOS, drivers & utilities. It doesn't work. It takes forever to scan for the list of updates. Then all attempts to update result in "download failed". So naturally I go to the website to manually download. Every link on their drivers section points you to a download link for DriverSmith which costs $50 ($29 on sale) to use. BTW their list of updates doesn't match the Live Update list of updates. So I find that MSI has Live Update Online (activex web version). Running this on my system gives me 1 update (vs the 20 from Live Update utility and 50 from DriverSmith).

If I don't return this MB (find a way to get drivers) I will post an update review in a couple weeks.

Other Thoughts: All the documentation has spelling errors and Changlish.

The mounting holes seem to have drained whatever protecting coating they put on the MB. I assume during production it is held by these holes and when it was released the protective coating hadn't dried and excess ran from the holes leaving smears across the MB.

The 2 sets of indicator LEDs on the MB are partially obscured by heatsinks.

UEFI mouse control often causes wrong selections when double clicking. After the 2nd click you autoselect whatever option may be beneath your pointer. And why are their "Games" in UEFI?

If you do buy this MB make sure you put your GPU in PCI_E2 (top slot). It is the only x16 slot. You will only get x8/x8 from 2 cards. And plug the USB port you want to charge devices with into JUSB1 (red one). It is the only one that allows charging.

Take a close look at the picture. You may not like all the stenciling written all over everything.

4 out of 5 eggsCool MOBO

Pros: Cool looking
Supports the i7 2500k CPU
Military grade parts
USB 3.0 and 6GB/s sata

Cons: I dont know if it's my CPU or the Motherboard issue, But when I overclock, the voltage running through my cpu gets up to 1.5 and that's uncomfortably high. Id like to see 1.2 or 1.3 at 4.2-4.4 GHz OC. I have a intel core i7 2500k OC'd to 4.0GHz.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far amazing but...

Pros: Too many to list right now, I'm hear at this time to inquire about Sata port problems...

Cons: It seems as though two Sata ports have died on me already. I have 3 Agility 3 SSD's in Raid 0 in Sata 3Gb/s and so far my computer has froze up/BSOD twice, each time when I tried rebooting, my RAID check screen showed a "failed" for the RAID status. So I switched the port that wasn't showing up in my BIOS and it came back. Had to do this twice now, anyone else experiencing this? Im ok with it right now, but if it happens again then I am 3 Sata ports down, and this severely limits my upgrading potential for the moderate future. Im planning on more SSD's for RAID 0.

Other Thoughts: N/A
