2 out of 5 eggsIssues with Linux Kernels 2.6.38+

Pros: Slick looking board. Runs well under Windows 7, though I only installed it for troubleshooting purposes (haven't gamed on it or spent any extended time with it). Would have been a nice base for my new Server/Programming Workstation

Cons: This board in not currently compatible with Linux kernel version 2.6.38, which is fine if you want to run Debian Stable (Squeeze) or Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx), but if you plan on running anything newer (as of writing this the current mainline kernel is 3.8-rc7).
Even if you decide to run an older Linux you will likely still have issues. Under squeeze, my keyboard stops working when the system is under load (have tested with a variety of USB keyboards, all of which are verified with other machines) and the only way to get it back is to unplug it and plug it back in. Under Lucid the issues with the keyboard persist.
Similar issues with other newer motherboards not being able to boot newer kernel versions have been reported, but most of them have had firmware updates to correct them. I have attempted to find updates to the board's firmware, but I seem to have the current build.

Other Thoughts: May be I should have done more research before purchasing this board. I understand that it is geared towards gaming on Windows and not running Linux.
I am considering purchasing an ASUS P9X79 Deluxe to replace this one. Still doing my research to make sure that board will work for my application.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Monkey,

Even though Linux is not mainstream OS that we provide support with, however you should always seek the latest distribution available to avoid any potential issues with it (eg Ubuntu 12.04).
Please try updating the BIOS to the latest version provided in the URL below for your motherboard.
http://www.msi.com/service/download/bios-19878.html

Please kindly provide the debugging information, duplication procedures, system spec (keyboard model) to us at usreview@msi.com and we can attempt to verify this issue.

2 out of 5 eggswas nice while it lasted

Pros: Nice looking.

Cons: Was nice till it started dropping sata ports 1 and 2. Only way to get them back is a cold restart. After about an hour or so BSOD again. Tried updating bios and same issue so it is getting RMA'd.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear rodspc,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
It seems like the problem is associated with hardware, however can you perform a clean install of your OS first? Then run memtest to make sure there are no read/write errors from the self-test?

If the above troubleshooting steps do not solve the problems you are having then it may be a chipset problem, then please kindly visit the URL below to set up a RMA with the following information.

6. Symptoms you are having onto the Special Remark section (as detailed as possible)

1 out of 5 eggsMSI X79A-GD65(8D) update

Pros: non

Cons: After getting the memory to run in all channels thru a bios update this board will not run pci express 3.0. Seems MSI disabled it in bios even when you select 3.0 in the bios screen.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte has no problems with pci 3.0 and is a 100%
better card.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: 8 DIMMS, dual bios, stable, looks great, seems to overclock well with bios revisions.

UEFI bios.

Windows updater is convenient.

Cons: CPU backplate is weird - thought I was going to have to drill the board out to mount my block but was able to pop out the mounting circles easily enough.

Do away with OC Genie, you just end up with a low end, unstable overclock.

Did not seem to come with as many goodies (extra accessories) as my old board (MSI 790FX-GD65)

A ton of extra software...which I don't care for.

Other Thoughts: Bought the first rev of this board when the 3930K was just released. I was literally running the first bios and having issues all over the place. By 1.3 things were stabilized. Every new bios has been better and better.
Presently I have my rig running at 4.3Ghz 24/7 no problems whatsoever. As soon as I get some time I will go further. Load temps in 50-55C.

I have been using MSI boards ever since Epox went out of business and have never had issues. I purchased an Asus board for my wife because she liked the colors and have regretted it for 2 years now. Her next computer will have an MSI mobo in it...

Board looks like a superb offering now.

1 out of 5 eggsOld boards still being shipped

Pros: None yet

Cons: I purchased my board at the end of February and I experienced the same bios problem everyone else experienced who used the i7-3820. I would have thought based on all of the previous reviews New Egg would have sent all of the old X79A-GD65 (8D) boards back to MSI. I guess not. I’m still excited about the potential of the board but disappointed I now have to send my board to MSI and probably have to wait another month before I can use it. It would have been a much better experience had I been sent a board which already had the updated bios.

Other Thoughts: New Egg needs to do a better job at verifying products do as advertised.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Don't know! Can't use it with the i7-3820!!

Cons: Won't even post with the i7-3820 unless you have the updated bios... which it doesn't ship with!

Other Thoughts: Had to go out of the way to ship it back to MSI so they could update the bios and ship it back to me. Still waiting to get it back so I can use the new PC. Unacceptable MSI ships without a working bios when the specs show it works with this processor!

5 out of 5 eggsworked out of the box for me

Pros: An AWESOME board. I finally got around to updating my home system after about 4 years and man this thing is a breath of fresh air. MSI still has yet to disappoint me when it comes to mother boards. I bought this board as part of the combo, despite what some of the reviews said about it not working out of the box with the i7-3820. I installed it, and after reading the friendly manual about the RAM config, hey presto, it worked perfectly. Even with bios 1.00. All in all quite a nice board.

Cons: I honestly cannot think of one.

Other Thoughts: Read the manual carefully and completely before attempting the install. This should really be a given, but for those who may think they know what they are doing, you may wind up in a spot where the board sends out a message via the debug LED that looks like the issue many had with their processor and BIOS revision when really you just didn't read the manual about how the RAM is supposed to go in. *blush*

1 out of 5 eggsCompatible with Sandy Bridge E-s? YEAH RIGHT

Pros: If over 10% of the motherboards that Newegg shipped out were compatible with the 3820's and up... probably everything.

Cons: The majority of these boards don't have updated bios and WILL NOT even post with the new processors.

Other Thoughts: I bought this in a bundle with the new i7 3820 and guess what? It's not even compatible unless you update the BIOS which you can't because it won't even POST because it's not compatible without the update. Newegg refuses to fix it, so I guess I have to pay money and send it to MSI and wait a month so they can spend 15 seconds to update my BIOS.
