3 out of 5 eggsBeware the 4GB RAM Limit

Pros: Cheap and had exactly the features (almost, see "Cons") that I was looking for. Integrated video, PATA and SATA connections, microATX form factor, 4 rear panel usb 2.0 ports and a rear panel firewire port. BIOS is easy to update and I've never had any problems with it except...

Cons: ...the integrated audio caused all kinds of problems when I installed an external audio interface (M-Audio FastTrack Pro). Odd sounds, computer restarting, etc. Disabling it worked for me, but if you're relying on the onboard sound card, it may be something to worry about.

The other BIG issue is the misleading claim of supporting 4GB RAM. It's been discussed by others, but it needs to be reiterated. I'll have to buy another board in a year or so because I'm basically wasting some of the RAM that I bought for this one. Put 2GB RAM in, you get 2 GB RAM. Put 4GB in and you get less than 4GB (3.1 GB for me). The only explanation that I've ever gotten is that when 4GB is installed, the board decides that it now needs some of that RAM. Why doesn't it "need" it when less RAM is installed? I'm no expert but that's ridiculous.

And reiterating: this is not an OS issue, it is the board.

And I've still never gotten a satisfactory explanation as to why

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the money!

Pros: Great motherboard for the price. I bought it to make a video-editing desktop and it's been doing a great job for over 2 years!

Cons: BIOS update was a little tricky, perhaps because it was my first time dealing with this, but otherwise no problem installing & getting running with it.

* BIOS update wasn't totally necessary, btw.

3 out of 5 eggsAudio Problems

Pros: Good Little Board for cheap builds

Cons: HD Audio Component made an aweful audible high pitch squeeling noise all the time. Noise activity increased as I moved around Windows around in windows xp or minimized or maximized. Very odd.

3 out of 5 eggsDANG !

Pros: Worked great for several months, installed easily and had no hick ups

Cons: several months later I was playing a game and it shut down into a windows blue screen stop message that said my bios wasn't compliant. Then it would never let me back into the bios so I could try flashing it. So It is dead after nearly a year. I excpected more from asus really. The sound did crackle as well but I never cared cause I run sound cards any ways

Other Thoughts: I guess I will try another one of these boards cause it has gotten better reviews than the rest of them but if this one goes bad I will really be anti asus. I know all electronics can fail but I haven't the money for lofty experimants. So... onward I guess

1 out of 5 eggsAsus Fails

Pros: It worked for about an hour and a half

Cons: Went south pretty quick. Would not boot. Swapped CPU, memory, power supply, etc. with know working components and the mobo would not even show the BIOS.

Other Thoughts: Asus seems to have lost their edge. I will be buying all Intel motherboards in the future.
