1 out of 5 eggsFollow-up Review Re: "Nightmarish"

Pros: USB on/off issue stopped happening for about an hour after I tried the suggestions from Benson at Asus Customer Loyalty.

Cons: The USB On/Off Issue, and the fix Benson from ASUS Customer Loyalty suggested, resulted in my computer completely blue-screening and out-right crashing.

I can't guarantee that was what made it happen, but it appears this board is just competely defective, and I wish ASUS would just accept that the board is bad in light of the many Newegg Customer complaints it has had, and just send me a different board. I am not looking for "something for nothing." I would gladly send this board to them so they could test it and figure out the defect.

Other Thoughts: I would gladly use another ASUS HDMI board. Preferrably one that takes 10600 DDR3 RAM, because I already have 2 sticks of that just sitting here.

OR, a motherboard that takes the same kind and quantity of RAM that this board uses. That way, I can just plug my current RAM into the new board.

Would you do that for me, ASUS? I'll gladly write you another followup review if the other board works. :-)

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for getting back to me. I'm sorry that the suggestion caused a blue screen. Please go back to Device Manager and re-check the option. Unfortunately, once a motherboard is out of its warranty, there will be a cost involved to have it serviced/RMA'ed. We do have a P5G41T-M LX PLUS that may still support your CPU. It uses DDR-3 memory instead of DDR-2. However it does not HDMI out. More information can be found here: http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5G41TM_LX_PLUS/.

Regards,
Benson

1 out of 5 eggsNightmarish

Pros: This board had HDMI before HDMI was really mainstream on PCs

Also, the board itself is sleek and pretty cool looking.

.......That is where the good parts stop....

Cons: I bought this board for a build over 3 years ago. Since then, I have regretted it every single day. It has numerous issues, from an asininely user-unfriendly audio interface to USB ports just randomly shutting off and turning back on.

The HDMI portion was awesome and seemed to work pretty well with Vista and an Akai Flatscreen TV, but as soon as I put it on another brand of Television, GOODBYE, CHARLIE!

Whenever I would turn off and turn back on my monitor, the image would be flipped on its side, even when I went into graphics properties, and switched off the "rotate" feature.

The sound just decides on its own when it's going to mute and unmute, making me very angry so I just turned off audio (which basically makes this computer LARGELY USELESS.

Other Thoughts: I would give it away to a friend or family member, but they'd just hate my guts if I did that.

Do not use this with a Core 2 Duo Wolfdale. If you have any other options, I would recommend going with that. The system runs completely unstable, and with the other problems I mentioned above, I just want to get rid of this system and be done with it.

Not even upgrading to Windows 7 took care of any of the problems.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you had with the motherboard.

Regarding USB ports on/off, please try going to Device Manager > USB Root Hub > uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". For the HDMI image rotation issue, try installing the latest video drivers from Intel. Audio output when using HDMI can be changed in Sound > Playback > right click on the device you want sound to output to > Set as Default.

Regards,
Benson

4 out of 5 eggsDecent bang for the buck!

Pros: Used for conference room PC with overhead projector. SPDIF coax output, tons of connectors, adapters and pre-labelled front panel connectors. Good documentation too. Installed into theater pc case with a Quadro FX1700 work-station video card. Runs smartly with WinXP Pro and all sorts of Windows Enterprise networking overhead. The Giga-bit LAN performs very well and handles multiple downloads with ease. So far it has exceeded my expectations with only a 2.8GHz Daul-Core uP.

Cons: Basic sound set-up tools offer limited digital audio tuning, especially on 7.1 theater systems.

Other Thoughts: Adequate for the office, but slightly under-whelming for the ultimate home theater pc.

3 out of 5 eggsGood board, horrible tech support

Pros: Good board that has lots of features and high configurability. Runs well in my mini-ATX case and runs cooler than other boards.

Cons: Tech support is horrible. I've had a problem since I got the board where it thinks there is a new chipset on every boot (requiring me to hit F2). Emailed two times with no response, posted in their forum - where I got more support from other users than Asus but still no resolution.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We are sorry for this inconvenience. Please contact our Technical Support Department at http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx so that we may get more details about your system configuration and assist you in resolving these issues you are experiencing.

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Adequate in all respects, a fine all-around motherboard. Reasonably flexible and advanced BIOS.

Cons: Starting to get outclassed by newer boards.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Board

Pros: This board installed fine and I had no problem completing my build. Runs very solid.

Cons: The MB temperature seems to get very high. I have tried many things and the MB temperature seems to want to idle around 45C. I get red flagged by the system once it starts to go beyond 45C.

Other Thoughts: I did put this board in a slim Micro ATX tower... Might have something to do with the temperature. But it still has me somewhat stumped. I suppose its off to new egg to order some fans and see what happens.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None that I know of.

Cons: I just bought this board last week on 3/13/09 and received it pretty fast. When I attempted to turn on the computer the system wouldn't post. The reason I bought this board was because it supported 45nm chips and of course it didn't work with my E8400. I read similar reviews online and the only way to fix the problem is to put another earlier chip in and update the bios; only problem is I don't have a 65nm chip and it would cost at least $45 for a pentium.

Other Thoughts: Another $25 wasted on shipping and restocking fees. I'll try one more ASUS board, and make sure there are no compatibility issues with the 45nm E8400 before purchase. Was trying to replace a broken Gigabyte board that died after 3 months, but may have to go back to them if the P5Q fails.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear valued Customer,

If you need the latest bios to fully support your CPU, then you can have it sent in to our RMA department and we can flash it to the latest bios version for you. For more information, please contact our tech support at 1-812-282-2787 and reference case# NE334259.

3 out of 5 eggsDual Ok / Quad no go

Pros: Depeends on the viewpoint. I have had this board for over a year with a E8400 in in. Works great and is nice and stable.

Cons: Attempted to upgrade to a Q9650 - Post and recognizes the CPU, I can even get into the BIOS [604] (which is not set for OC BTW). But the system will not boot beyond "checking NVRAM". CPU verified good by testing in an Shuttle XPC.

Other Thoughts: Looks like I will be replacing with a Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H order on Monday...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The Q9650 should work with bios version 0605. If you have issues getting it to work, please contact our tech support at 812-282-2787 and reference case# NE322165 so that we can know more about your system configuration and assist you in resolving the issue.
