1 out of 5 eggsNot a good Asus board

Pros: 1. Small with 4 RAM slots (well, read the cons)
2. Got onboard HDMI output (which I didn't use)

Cons: 1. Awkard SATA port position which makes installing in small cases hard (usually the board edge touches some sort of obstacle in such small cases, and the ports just can't be used because they opened sideway)

2. Get locks up / reboot when stayed on for a couple of minutes. I don't know whether it's the issue of the CPU I'm using or the display card. Upgraded BIOS but still there always and render this unusable.

3. PLEASE note this in the specification, or somwhere noticable - the 4 slots are only usable if you stick SINGLE-SIDED DDR2-RAM in all 4 slots. If you wanna use double-sided RAM (which is the MAJORITY), think twice before buying a set of 4 x 2GB RAM. (Ya, I wasted 2 x 2GB of high speed overclock-able RAM!!)

Other Thoughts: One of the worst board I've ever worked on.

Given that I have been assembling PCs since the day of 486 DX2-66, I've touched numerous boards. I loved ASUS in the old day (when they were still making VIA chipset for Pentium III systems), and my second motherboard happened to be an Asus (a 486 board, when the L2 cache were SRAM on the motherboard.)

But somehow I can feel that the QC wasn't as good as the day when they were just making motherboard. I got fried Asus display card from a friend, 2 motherboards that need to be returned and came across this one now.

I guess my next purchace will not be Asus anymore... better find Gigabyte. I have my own PCs assembled using them since they introduce All Solid-Cap (a P35, 2 965Ps). They might not be the best overclock board (well, my P35C-DS3R was a pretty great one) but provide much more consistent QC and quality cross different segment (even G31 boards are pretty solid). Even Foxconn, Magic-Pro, Intel and MSI won't disappoint me...

2 out of 5 eggsJUNK

Pros: ASUS MADE IT

Cons: ASUS did not think this one through at all. The whole MEMORY thing really UPSETS me ( I use this word so I don't get censored by Newegg ) the placements of the sata ports is ridiculous, and so on and so on ,etc etc. Bad one for Asus.
HOWEVER !!! I still think they are the BEST in the industry when it comes to motherboards, this one is junk in MY opinion . Even the best can have a bad day.

Other Thoughts: none, enough said.

3 out of 5 eggsHDMI audio problems.

Pros: Stable and reasonably well featured.

Cons: Using the onboard HDMI port, I could not get any aduio output through the Realtek device with any combination of settings I tried. You need to set the audio device to the Intel HDMI device instead, which works but doesn't support 5.1 - it will only output stereo. Running XP so this may or may not apply to Vista.

Only two memory dividers available for 800FSB CPU (1:1 and 5:4) so overclocking is limited.

1394 only on backplane, no header for front panel.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a board for 8G of memory

Pros: Well the board is cheap you can't denied that.

Cons: After testing different scenarios, memory chips, and getting email support from a prominent memory vendor I can confirm that this board can only (officially) support single rank memory. And they don't have that kind of memory and no ETA.

Other Thoughts: If you want 8G of ram, this board is not for you.

2 out of 5 eggsBad layout design

Pros: I knew what I wanted, and the board gave me exactly that, with no functional surprises. Worked great out of the box. Didn't have to mess with anything. Decent documentation.

Cons: The only thing that REALLY REALLY ticked me off, causing it to lose 3 eggs, was the ridiculous choice of SATA plugs placement. Why, oh why, would you have the plugs facing to the side?? I bought this for an HTPC (which should be a fairly common thing, due to the features), and I stuck it in a mATX case. After screwing it all in, I realized that there is only about 1/4" of space between the case and the plugs. Impossible to get a straight SATA cable into (without taking the board out, and forcing it back in), and REALLY tricky to get a 90-degree cable in (the slots were also "backwards", therefore, none of my regular 90-degree cables fit due to being the wrong way around). Even if you got the right cables, you could only use 3 of the six plugs, since they sit on top of each other.
Bottom line: I had the choice of cutting the case, or returning it. I did the latter. The p5q-em doesn't have this silliness.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We thank you for your feedback and will take it into consideration in our future designs.

Best Regards,

1 out of 5 eggsRAM issues

Pros: at this point, none...

Cons: whats the deal with the ram?! if you want to use all for slots, you have to use single sided dimm? this is only printed in the manual, no where on newegg. so far i have bought 2 different sets of 8gb ram, only to find out they dont work. you need single channel ram, and after hours of looking, i dont think 2gb single channel ram even exists!?

Other Thoughts: if you want to use 8 gb of ram, find a different motherboard...

3 out of 5 eggsRAM upgrade surprise

Pros: Works well, stable.

Cons: As others have mentioned, it can only handle two double-sided DIMMS, not four. I discovered this after buying extra RAM for three systems based on this board. Of course, the RAM is non-refundable :(

Other Thoughts: After the comptuer failed to boot, I looked in the manual and they do state that only single sided DIMMS are supported if you use more than 2 slots. Should have read the manual first...

The DDR2 RAM listings here on the Egg do not seem to indicate if a DIMM is double or single sided. How are you supposed to know what to buy for this board?

If you expect to use 4 DIMMs, this board is not for you.

1 out of 5 eggsdoesn't support 8 gigs of ram

Pros: none! bought this board so i could upgrade to a quad cpu and 8 gigs of ram. but it only supports 8 gigs if you use ss dimms in all 4 slots. try finding ss 2 gig sticks.

Cons: not as advertised...........

Other Thoughts: if your looking for a board that supports 8 gigs of ram. choose something else. stay away from this board.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not support 8GB of RAM

Pros: low price, and embedded graphics were the reasons I selected the board.

Cons: The express gate feature causes ASUS boards to show messed up graphics during start. The board will not POST with certain RAM configurations including those which only have 2 dimms in 2 different channels.

Other Thoughts: I had to reset the system clock in order to get past express gate (by disabling it in the BIOS settings).
