Asus's ROG series motherboards have an unparalleled reputation within the overclocking community and their Rampage II Extreme motherboard is the next step. Based on Intel's X58 Express and ICH10R chipsets, this ATX board is ready to host the newest LGA1366 Core i7 processors for ultimate powerful performance.
Up to 12GB of DDR3 1333 RAM can be installed in triple channel mode providing increased performance. Get even more performance – up to 1800Mhz – through overclocking. Three PCI-Express 2.0 x16 cards can be mounted for cutting-edge graphic power with support for either NVIDIA SLI or ATI CrossFireX. 100% all high-quality conductive polymer capacitors give longer life and higher energy efficiency by supplying power to vital components independently.
Get eight channels of HD sound from the ADI AD2000B audio chipset for pure, clear audio. Connect up to six SATA drives at 3Gb/s for high-speed data transfers as well as the option for multiple RAID configurations. Integrated dual Gigabit Ethernet LAN allows bottleneck-free connections to other network devices at broadband speeds and six USB 2.0 ports allows for nearly unlimited possibilities in connecting peripheral devices.
Pros: High performance and mostly trouble free motherboard -Very smooth overclocking -Working eSATA -Mostly clean and open layout (GPUs may be an issue) -Stable
Cons: Cold boot issues. Most people seem to agree it's PSU related--if you get the cold boot issue, you can boot by powercycling your PSU--a simple work around is to turn off your PSU when you shut down your computer. This would be a last ditch effort versus finding a PSU which plays better with this Mobo and troubleshooting things like reseating the power to the Mobo and what not.
Soundcard included was DoA--but I was planning on a separate soundcard anyway, so I'm not too bothered.
Other Thoughts: Lowest PCIE x16 slot is really low, so some cases may not be able to accommodate a Graphics card in that slot--choose your case carefully. The heatsink next to the highest PCIE x 16 slot can also block a graphics card, but you can get aftermarket replacements or remove the last row of tines to get one in.

Solid board
Reviewed By: ericeod on 10/4/2009
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: This board is rock solid. With the last 2 bios releases, the board fully supports the W35X0 Xeon i7. The bios also allows for selecting the x21 multi without being forced to run SpeedStep (EIST and C1E).
Cons: Currently running air cooling with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (TRUE).
Note: I got this board as an Open Box and have not had a single issue with it. I have owned the board since May 2009, so it has been running for a few months now.
Other Thoughts: The board is pushing my Xeon W3520 (i7 920 D0 equiv) to 4.2GHz with HT enabled and my 3x2Gb G.Skill 2000 Trident at DDR3 1611 6-7-6-18 1T. It does so with 1.288v vcore, 1.26v QPI and 1.59v vdimm.

Great mobo for your Core i7 experience!

Pros: ~Lots of room on the board ~Lots of neat little features ~Lots of OC options ~OCs very well ~Plenty of SATA ports ~Comes with a little sound card that is quite good ~LCD Poster (backlit) for monitoring temps and such ~It's pretty XD sound card lights up, mobo lights up, i/o panel lights up ~Had no problem installing hardware and setting up computer
Cons: ~For the first week-or-so of ownership, I had the same problem many others seem to be having, that it would not post from a cold start, and I had to turn-off-and-turn-back-on the PSU to get it to start again, or reset the CMOS. I'm not sure how, but I somehow managed to fix it, because I no longer have the problem. Honestly, that is the board's only con from my experience, and while it is kindof a fatal flaw, I'll only deduct one egg since it managed to fix itself. ~This wasn't a con in my case, but it might be too big for some people's cases. Uses standard ATX screwholes, but is a bit wider, but wide enough that it might not fit in some cases.
Other Thoughts: ~I easily OCed my 920 to 4.0GHz with this board, and hope to go even further! ~My Core i7 Rig: Case: Antec 1200 Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme CPU: Intel Core i7 920 RAM: 3x2GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 280 SSC HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB PSU: Corsair HX1000W

Pros: great board for overclocking
Cons: 1st board blew out after 2 months something to do with the ram slots.. 2nd board ran great until either my video cards smoked the board or the board smoked the video cards.. poor layout you lose 2 top slots, one for the heat sink and one for the "on board sound" and when running tri sli the bottom card hangs down off the bottom slot on my case anyways a lian li 343b.. im done with this board.. picked up a supercomputer board to support what i need..
Other Thoughts: you pay almost 400 dollars for a motherboard you expect perfection this was far from it.. ive always used asus always been great boards but the last year or 2 has been a bad nightmare. i went with asus again for the supercomputer board so lets hope its not near as bad as this experience was with the rampage. i gave it 2 eggs as if your a overclocking junkie this is the board for you.

Pros: So far so good. I don't have the issues that some of you other guys seem to have with this board. My pins were all the way they were supposed to be, my ram slots work (or at least the 3 I'm using, since I really have no intentions to go over 6gb of RAMS. Sound card worked. I really like the LED poster, very nice to see what's going on, over the beeps. Also, another cool thing that I didn't think about before, but the way the board is setup, it makes sure the PCI-E cards will all be upside down, which means the only dust that gets inside of your graphics cards is the dust circulating in the air below it (which minimizes the dust in your high-end graphics cards). LEDs on the mobo are cool looking, since I have a see-through panel on my case. I haven't had a chance to mess around with the OC features, but I'm sure it works similar to the rest of the board. It also comes with 3 leads to monitor heat of whatever theyre attached to which shows up the LED poster as well.
Cons: Pricey...but you pay for what you get. I wasn't sure if I should put this in the cons or not, but the board is slightly larger than the standard, which shouldnt be an issue in most cases. However my case has cable management through the back, and heat partitions, which assumes the board will follow the standard. Since mine does not, its kind of a tight fit. My heat partition for the PCI-E area doesn't go in, because it needs to seat itself around the side of the mobo, which the mobo covers the whole its supposed to go into. Also, the cable management slots are slightly covered, so in order to get some of the larger cables in and out, I need to loosen my board. Not really a big deal, especially if you don't have my case, however even if you do, it's quite manageable. I'm probably going to file down the partition to make it fit into place
Other Thoughts: I bought this as part of a set for a new rig: Thermaltake Spedo Advance Intel i7 930 processor (with stock heatsink) Asus Rampage II Mobo OCZ Gold DDR3 1600 2GBx3Sticks 850w Corsair Modular ATX PSU WD 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive Nvidia GT240 (Until my Sapphire 4870x2 comes back from RMA) Windows 7 Home Edition And the only thing I didn't buy was a DVD drive, since I just took my lightscribe DVD burner from my old machine
