5 out of 5 eggsExcellent open box deals

Pros: Dual server nics, 4-way Sli, Serial port!!

Easy setup for me thanks to other reviewers here. My only caveat is you should reset the bios before you attempt to flash. I have two of these boards and both had successful bios flash doing the reset first. Be sure to scroll down and read the other reviews about the bios file renaming, this is important.

Also, when adding ram I had to remove the OC completely. For some reason it would see the ram but not present it to the system until OC removed. After that OC'ing is fine and ram is good. I mixed in 4x8gb + 3x4gb to test the slots and all were recognized and worked.

Cons: Installing a 2 slot air cooled video card in the last sli slot makes some of your peripherals difficult to plug in. Just keep this in mind and plan accordingly.
The extra power connector for the pci express bus is in a funky location, make sure to plug it in before installing a card in the first slot.

Not all the accessories were included in my New Egg open box which wasn't a deal breaker for me. The sli bridges were all there as well as the rfi shield. I have tons of cables and other extras if I needed them. Just be aware if you get an open box, some of these items may not be there. Also the open box was a plain white box, whereas my other open box's were the original box.

Other Thoughts: I purchased an open box from 'A' that had a bent pin but the replacement was perfect with all accessories setup. In the meantime I ordered a 2nd replacement 'open box' from new egg to increase the chance of getting a good board and didn't open the box, while I setup the 'A' replacement board.

I was going to return the new egg open box until I saw the restock and shipping charge. Instead I opened the box and checked if the board would flash the new bios. When it did, I decided to keep it and ordered a quad core for it.

I pooled my 3 gtx 680 ftw in sli for a speedy single screen gaming machine that does double duty as my main media center recording machine (always on).

Very pleased with the first machine, a hex core 2 way sli setup for multi-boxing MMO's. Extremely pleased with the second machine for single screen gaming (borderlands, skyrim etc) and media center usage.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy negative reviews?

Pros: 1) Intuitive layout
2) Easy setup
3) Dual Intel I210 LAN ports--server grade make and model
4) 32-64 GB of RAM capable--using 32GB DDR3 1200-CL9
5) 7 Expansions/PCIe slots
6) Stable
7) Easy to overclock--even though it's a workstation board
8) Runs cool even when OC'ed

There's so much more, but the ability to Flash the BIOS externally was a life saver on the initial build.

Cons: 1) Marvell caching
2) Only 1 true USB 2.0 header

Other Thoughts: To ensure your PCIe slot is running at 3.0, simply go into the BIOS-->Advanced menu-->System Agent Configuration and select the slot(s) of your video card(s) and select "GEN3"...which is 3.0. Also, my 2nd Generation i7 [3930K] is cable of running PCIe 3.0. I have 2 x GTX680's w/ 4GB in SLI and have had no problems.

1 out of 5 eggsSeriously?

Pros: Connectivity, Company name.

Cons: Had to flash bios twice but one ASUS tech was fantastic and patient on the phone. Still having problems, I later had to carry out two complete re-formats to solve program lock up issues where I finally got some good advice from a friend to check the bios date which defaulted several years in the past (60 hours wasted to install the over 50 programs - twice). False temperature readings? Motherboard goes from +33 C to minus 1 degree C, even once indicated +60!! I have liquid cooling and several Noctua and Corsair fans. Voltage red flags go from +5 to+12 and +12 to +30!! ASUS tech (after I finally reached them again) said it was my $350 Corsair 1200 Watt Power Supply which is not even running at 30 percent and for which its dedicated software and my computers hardware monitor (not the AI suite) says all is good. So... I got a $6,000 work station beast that crashed, freezes and programs lock up or fail to initialize and the supplied DVD manuals (out of date) are next to useless. In my opinion, there is insufficient explanation for what control settings (especially Ai Suite) should be made too. Telling a new car driver in a manual "that is a steering wheel" with gizmos attached is not the same thing as telling him how to turn the steering wheel under different speed and driving conditions. Upon un-boxing, I took lots of pictures and I had fears that this might be a used board from the slight marring on the PCH plate (south bridge).

Maybe I am expecting too much from a flag ship manufacturer? Maybe as a professional electronics technician, instructor and technical writer with 30+ years experience, my standard is too high? I have written many a concise manual in pdf format - one over 700 pages for an entire radar system - and I always provided a fully blown description of every facet for every condition and what to do for various technical circumstances Hmmmm $500 eh? The foundation of my work station and I cannot get authoritative and exact info I needed on it - even as requested with tech support. I wanted to speak with an engineer - I do that allot by the way and I understand they build things but alas cannot explain it often - so you can imagine my frustration when finally getting through the 4'th time and I am speaking with a polite gentlemen in the Philippines who said he would bump my service request up a notch to 2'nd level. Still have not heard or gotten an email regarding that specific issue. I did get a call back though regarding the MOBO registration screw up (my fault) wherein they indicated it really wasn't necessary to register the MOBO after I accidentally deleted the web data input and tried to re-register. ASUS has/had a great reputation for me. Hmmm Gigabyte is looking interesting.

Other Thoughts: Great delivery time - truly impressive New Egg!

Thanks new egg for offering extended replacement plans - think I will be using mine.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

Have you been able to follow-up with the RMA? If not, I would recommend moving forward with the process, as what problems you are describing can be explained by a malfunctioning unit. Should you need any assistance in this matter, please do not hesitate to let me know through email. 3738429

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Easy setup and rich with features. If this thing doesn't have it you probably don't need it. The BIOS tools are great and easy to use. I really don't know why the bad reviews...especially for those who had difficulty updating the BIOS. All of the expansion ports, SATA and USB ports are great. Excellent product.

Cons: A little pricey but look at what you get.

Other Thoughts: There are a number of additional diagnostic tools available on the ASUS website. I just wish they had put them on the disc that came with the board.

5 out of 5 eggsUnexperienced users

Pros: I bought the Open box one that you couldn't get working! lol, although it is working perfect in my computer. So, how come you couldn't get it to work?

Guys, this is a really good board. Mine was opened! It runs like a champ. Trust me, this board came out right at a year ago. And it is a monster! They are shipping them with a updated bios, but you may get a older one! this board uses two PLX chips. It can push 64X PCI-E lanes. If you want a powerful system that can manage alot of hardware, and overclock great, then I recommend this board!

So many people claim they are super techs, and put these horrible reviews, and there is nothing even wrong with the board. This board is superior! And it is expensive because you can run quad X16! And it is a workstation board!

This board is not a ultra ZZZ 7500k big boy Smoke gamer edition! blah blah blah

It is a fully loaded Workstation board! And I have a i7 4820k running at 4.9ghz on it!

It will overclock for sure, the build quality is phenomenal! I see 3 out of 5 stars in the reviews on this board, WHY? What went wrong?. That does not phase me. I bought a open box one, updated my bios, assembled my system. And I have never had a problem. And I have been building systems for 12 years. And never had a single DOA part. Newegg is great! id say 93% of DOA is user error!

Cons: 1= Only 2x usb 3.0 on the back I/O.

2= And it receives bad reviews by inexperienced users.

Pros: Extremely capable board. Does 100% of what I could possibly ask of a board. The feature set is there, the quality is there. Can't ask for more.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board - Not Sure Why All the Negative Reviews

Pros: 1. Easy out of the box setup
2. Great processor support
3. ECC DIMM support
4. True Quad PICIE 16x slots
5. Great UEFI BIOS
6. Easy BIOS flash from the BIOS

Cons: 1. Poor RAID support with built in SATA

If I run a RAID set I will use a LSI RAID controller anyway.

My only problem was when I went to flash the BIOS I was mislead by the negative reports of how difficult it was to flash along with Asus's own poor documentation. The auto flash button did not work for me either.

Other Thoughts: I have had this board up and running for over 7 months. I was not an Asus fan when I purchased it but it was the only board that met all my requirements at the time. I guess you could say I am a convert now to Asus. It was easy to setup with my hexa-core i7 processor, 4 8gb sticks of RAM and Samsung EVO 256gb SSD. It has been running great ever since with Win 8 and now 8.1.

I was fooled into thinking that updating the BIOS was a problem by negative reviews and Asus's own poor documentation. All I had to do was put the .cap file on a memory stick and go into the BIOS and choose to flash it from the EZ-Flash utility (advanced mode) in the BIOS interface itself. I did rename the file to P9X79EWS.cap but I don't know if that was even necessary as I had performed this step based on negative reviews prior to finding the simple way to perform the flash. BIOS flashed without incident and showed the progress on reboot. All is well and the BIOS flash, combined with turning off all the IPV6 settings for the TOE NIC, fixed my issues with Win 8 and sleep mode.

1 out of 5 eggsdisappointed

Pros: looks good
good spec sheet

Cons: ordered first board through another vendor, could not get it up and running despite multiple calls to Asus support. returned that board, and ordered the same through Newegg. could not get this one running either - and yes I do know the silly hoops you have to jump through to get the BIOS updated.

Other Thoughts: If you get a message from Asus support to leave your number and they will call you back, you should not hold your breath while waiting.
Tried to give this zero eggs because of the Asus support, but had to give it 1

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board, could be better.

Pros: - Support for up to Quad SLI
- Support for up to 64 GB of DDR3 Memory
- LGA2011
- Easy to configure BIOS even when using advanced mode
- Board now ships from what I can tell with IvyBridge-E compatible BIOS

Cons: - Everything is packed a bit too close together, wasted 100$ on a Phanteks CPU heatsink and fan set that couldn't fit with my Ram.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS BOARD!

Pros: Asus customer service was pretty good, so thankfully I was able to get ahold of techs when I needed.

Cons: All the negative comments I read on here from multiple other users indicating problems with the bios, DOA boards ect were real. I made the mistake of buying this board before reading the reviews, but thankfully I did read reviews so I knew to update the bios, which was at least a four hour process, very painful.

I bought this board for WS capabilities but ultimately realized it makes more sense to either go full on ws or full on consumer parts. the idea of making a hybrid is a bad idea.

After a ridiculous 12 hour build time I got it to boot windows 8 but ultimately RMA'd and got a different board due to an illusive fan speed error at POST and cpu idle temps of 60+c and BSOD issues. Some of these could have been related to the cpu cooler, which I will reviewing separately, but the mobo never quite seemed to work right either. Fan speed error = defective mobo imo.

Other Thoughts: I wish there was a no egg option. this bad product didn't even deserve a single egg.

The other comment I want to add is against the rules of this websites admin, so I won't put it, but maybe if this ends up getting posted, some folks will be able to read between the lines to figure out what I want to say...

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

Thank you for your review. I am sorry that the motherboard did not meet your expectations. The BIOS update should be a fairly simple process. Below I have included our BIOS update how-to guide for your reference. Regarding the fan speed errors, it is possible the CPU of the motherboard was at 60c, which would make sense if the CPU cooler was faulty. That said, I am glad that your RMA process went as planned. Please let me know if you have any questions about ASUS. We are here to help. 3359683
