Extreme I/O Expandability with High VR Power Efficiency

P9D-E/4L is the flagship model of ASUS latest UP Denlow serverboards. The board is perfectly designed with powerful I/O expandability and digital power solution increasing VR power efficiency up to 94%. The versatile and highly reliable P9D-E/4L is ideal for data center front-end, firewall, gateway, storage, SMB print / file / mail / exchange servers, and more.

Features

ASUS Motherboard

The Most Scalable PCI-E Expandability, Advanced I/O Technology

The ASUS P9D-E/4L provides industry-leading PCI Express 3.0 x8 slots and one ASUS PIKE support. Along with ASUS technology, this board stands as the most powerful PCI-E expandability ever in UP server boards.

The P9D-E/4L server board is built to support up to four USB 3.0 ports. Built to connect easily with next generation components and peripherals, USB 3.0 transfers data 10 times faster and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0.

High Power Efficiency with Premium Components and Digital Power Control

ASUS-exclusive Beat Thermal Chokes and new Dr. MOS (MOSFETs) improve the voltage regulator (VR) power efficiency. The Beat Thermal Chokes handle the pressure with ease, as a unique fin design results in around 40°F (4°C) lower choke temperatures for added stability, which is increased exponentially by use of highly conductive and efficient gold-treated coating. This translates into minimal-loss power delivery. Besides, with proven stable circuits integrated, Dr. MOS optimizes switching performance.

Digital CPU power controls work perfectly together to match digital power signal (SVID) requests from the CPU, with ultra-fast sensing and response efficiently delivering precision power. Accurate delivery reduces waste, and provides more stable voltage.

The benefits from these components significantly increase P9D-E/4L VR power efficiency up to 94%.

Design to Support Legacy PCI Device Applications

Besides the latest PCI-E technology, P9D-E/4L keeps the legacy PCI slots on board which can fulfill various customers' requirements. Customers can move their existing legacy PCI add-on cards to P9D-E/4L, and still benefit from up-to-date Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 v3 Processor Family and DDR3 memory technology to their solutions.

ASUS Motherboard

Quad Intel® I210AT Gigabit Ethernet

The ASUS P9D-E/4L ships with quad server-class Intel® Ethernet ports with the I210AT controllers, which doubles queues compared to previous-generation Intel® 82574L controllers. This is better for virtualization applications. In addition, the quad LAN teaming ports provide high networking bandwidth with load balance and fault tolerance functions. This design greatly reduces data processing bottlenecks during network traffic.

Comprehensive Server Management: ASMB7-iKVM and ASWM Enterprise

The ASMB7-iKVM upgrade kit enables dashboard system health monitoring, remote power on/off and control, virtual media over LAN, and management LAN fail-over support. In addition, the ASMB7 function is based on BIOS-level access, so even if the server's operating system is down or offline, the KVM module can still provide round-the-clock remote monitoring and diagnosis through a user-friendly web-based graphical interface via all major browsers. ASWM Enterprise software provides one-to-multiple centralized management, including BIOS flash, remote control, and power control, all through a colorful and informative graphical interface.

SATA Disk-on-Module (DOM) Ready

A SATA DOM is a flash drive simulating a hard disc which can be used without additional software or drivers. It is particularly helpful within embedded computing systems or thin clients. ASUS-exclusive design adds an onboard 4-pin power connector and USB header to make SATA DOM installation simple and easy.

Friendly Design for Front I/O, Front VGA

An accessible rear power button is reserved onboard for use as front panel ports when reversing the serverboard. An extra 15-pin VGA header features front-panel monitor connectivity, helping customers with greater flexibility. These designs provide flexible I/O integration for users to fit in various computing environments.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfectly stable once I found the correct RAM

Pros: Mobo was purchased with a Xeon E3-1270V3 (Haswell) back in August, 2013; I like to wait a bit on reviews to see how a component is going to hold up. Server was built on Sept. 1 and brought online the next day with Server 2008r2 Std.; also got the Asus PIKE 2008-IMR 8-port SAS2 RAID add-in card. Final config includes 9 HDDs in various RAID arrays (4 SAS and 5 SATA). PSU is a Corsair AX860i and also installed the H60 liquid cooler for CPU. Everything was straightforward -- this was my first Asus server mobo but have used several dozen Asus boards for desktop PCs. The only complaint I would make is regarding RAM -- see the Cons...

Cons: Asus specifies a list of 8 memory models that will work with this motherboard; this list is not a recommendation. (The list was updated in Dec'13 to include 14 models, I believe). I could not 4 of them anywhere (including auction sites). The remaining 4 models were an option, but I made the assumption that these were "recommended" units. I initially purchased Wintec 16GB DDR3-1600 ECC server memory -- system wouldn't boot. Ok, so I go by the list and order "Kingston KVR16E11/8i" -- the approved DIMM list specifies Kingston with vendor P/N "KVR16E11/8" -- so that little "i" apparently changes something (even though both dimms had the same Hynix chips). No go -- sent those back. Ordered the Hynix DIMMs that had same chip specs and part number (closest I could find -- and it was expensive). No go. To make a long story short, I finally borrowed a pair of Kingston DIMMs that another IT guy had sitting on a shelf for backup (might as well try anything) and they worked (4GB) despite not being on the approved DIMM list (and having non-spec cas latency, etc.). So this bought me some time to track down the EXACT model of one of the listed DIMMs. I don't remember which ones I got because I've been typing too long already -- but they worked.

Other Thoughts: Once RAM problem was overcome, everything has been purring along with nary a hint of an issue. I know server boards are picky about their memory but this got to be a little ridiculous (so did the money wasted on overnight shipping -- this server is now the PDC for my company).

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: Has good ancestors

Cons: The first one I got had defective socket, leading to bended pins. In this case the repairs are for you (140+tax without warranty), And nobody will even have a look at it because bended pin are out of warranty.
Apart that perfs are average and price is high.

Other Thoughts: I quite appeciated asus mb by the past, that's my second bad experience in 1 year with them, looks that I have change my mind

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about your experience with the motherboard. Our motherboards go through rigorous inspection before leaving the factory, and all come with a protective CPU socket cover to prevent accidental damage to the socket pins. Unfortunately, this type of damage (bent pins) is not covered under warranty and a standard repair cost would apply to fix the unit. Once again, we apologize for this inconvenience. Should you need further assistance or have any questions about ASUS or our products, please let us know. Your reference number is 3012244.

5 out of 5 eggsvery nice board

Pros: Great board. Quad i210AT is awfully nice. PCIe v3 support means you can use an uber-fast storage adaptor. BIOS is well laid out and very easy to flash using the built-in utility for this purpose. Amply provisioned for fans and expansion slots. Works great with an E3 1240 v3 CPU and Seasonic X750 PSU. VMWare ESXi 5.1 runs fine (but isn't straightforward to install; see cons). Asus support is pretty good, and their published hardware compatibility lists are very helpful.

Cons: This is a new product with the attendant caveats: the ASMB7 is still not widely available (I've only found one online source that claims to have it in stock). The i210AT network adaptors aren't well supported by many platforms yet. You'll need to jump through some hoops to get VMWare ESXi 5.1 onto it, because the installer doesn't see any NICs and will halt (VMWare does support the i210AT, just not at install time yet). The board's manual claims that there is a BIOS toggle to disable ECC, but that's wrong; there's no such option. Asus support says ECC is enabled whenever ECC RAM is installed.

Other Thoughts: This board requires unbuffered ECC memory. Read the manual before buying memory. I'm using Kingston KVR16E11K4/32I, whose price has jumped sharply in the last week.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board, set-up a bit tricky.

Pros: Nice server board.
If you use RAID, see the toggle pin on the bard to set up and the drivers have to be manually selected and installed.
ASUS phone support is wonderful!

Cons: Be sue you check RAM Mfg's websites for compatibility with this board prior to purchase! Newegg Details do not include that tidbit. See ASUS website for more info on board RAM. ECC 1600 RAM worked for me.
