1 out of 5 eggsProblems staying shutdown with WOL enabled (part 2)

Pros: See my previous review for the pros of this MB. It is entitled,"Problems staying shutdown with WOL enabled" published on 11/30/2013 2:30:04 PM.

Cons: Users of Linux/Unix cannot enable WOL and shutdown the system; it will turn itself back on after 5 sec or so.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to follow up with the group after contacting Mark at Asus who read my review and posted the manufacture's response.

We exchanged 20 some odd emails over the course of 4 weeks. At the end of the exchange, he offered to test my board at Asus but would not provide me with an option to drop-ship a replacement. I told him this was not feasible for me since the machine has a role to play and I do not want weeks of downtime.

The salient piece of info I distilled out of our conversations was that Asus does not officially support Linux so if you are planning to use a non-windows OS on the board, and if you require WOL, my advice is for you to look at other vendors.

I actually spent a pretty good chunk of time searching on this specific model and this particular issue; I found a dozen or so reports of other users running both Linux and Unix (freeNAS and some other distro I haven't heard of before) also experiencing this problem. I also found several users running windows 7 and 8 that also experienced the very same issue. To me that's enough evidence of something systemic causing the problem as I assured in my original review, i.e. it is not the fault of my particular MB, but rather something in the UEFI firmware or the like.

Summary: Asus does not support non-windows operating systems. Look at other vendors if you plan to run Linux/Unix and want WOL to function properly.

Pros: Very good ITX motherboard, with the largest number of USB ports of all ITX boards.

Cons: I really don't think there are any cons

Other Thoughts: i5-4130T 2.9GHz 35W Haswell

Had to manuall set RAM to 1600 (not a big deal).
Very easy install. Small, fast and quiet. Runs great!

4 out of 5 eggsVery Good Value

Pros: Packs a lot of features with flexible options in the UEFI BIOS. USB3 rear ports and header; 6 SATA, usable PCI-e slot; HDMI, DVI and VGA; Optical digital out. These are all very useful features that will apply to a variety of installations.

The DRAM slots are moved closer to the center of the board than other MB which can be a benefit in small cases, but could impede on the CPU fan. Nice heatsink on the chipset.

The build quality is excellent.

Cons: First MB with booted with BSOD. Replacement worked perfect. More expensive than other H87 boards.

Other Thoughts: Despite the higher cost compared to other H87 MBs, the tradeoff in quality and features make this a very good value.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect build for a multi terabyte, low power home server.

Pros: I wanted to build a home server, low power, quite, that supported multiple hard drives. My build included this component and fit the bill perfectly. I have now a very quiet server, using very low power, with more than 5TB mirrored drives (raw is >10TB). Strongly recommended.

My build:
- BitFenix Phenom BFC-PHE-300-KKXKK-RP Mini-ITX computer case
- Rosewill Green series 530W 80 PLUS Bronze power
- ASUS H87I-PLUS Mini ITX motherboard
- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL
- Intel Core i3-4130T 35W (super low power)
- Crucial M500 120GB Sata 2.5" SSD
- 5 Hard Drives, all Western Digital Green, from 1TB to 4TB
- Windows 8.1

Everything is low power, I use the integrated graphics of the CPU, and the SSD keeps the build quite fast. With Windows I created a single 'storage space' that takes all the 5 hard drives and makes it look like a single multi terabyte hard drive, and I selected to have everything mirrorored. No fuss with RAID, it is all in Wnidows. I don't use a monitor or keyboard (only used it to set it up), as I connect remotely via remote desktop. I chose these components to make sure they were all compatible - it has been running 24/7 for the past 4 weeks with no problem, no heat, no noise. I serve my music to my Sonos components, backup all my work, share all my pictures, and could even remotely access it (I have not set that up yet).

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: I had to flash the new BIOS, no problem. I had to reseat the memory and ended up buying a motherboard speaker to hear the beeps and help me diagnose the memory seated incorrectly. Running like a champ.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with G3220

Pros: Inexpensive mini-ITX 1150 with 6 sata

Cons: Despite what Asus's website says, it does not work with G3220. I get no DVI out and no way to upgrade the BIOS. Asus support was limited to asking if I remembered to plug it in.

Other Thoughts: I switched to ASRock Z87E-ITX. It was more money, but worked fine.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard. At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email, and we can discuss this case further. 4 out of 5 eggsCompact Fileserver

Pros: 6 SATA ports on a Mini ITX MB makes for a modestly-priced Linux fileserver.

Cons: SATA port 2 gave I/O errors. Not sure whether it was the Adata SSD on port 1 causing problems, or the port was bad. (I swapped cables and drives on port change. But I couldn't move the SSD off port 1, so I couldn't test all the possibilities. Anyway, I only needed 4 bulk-storage ports, so I didn't bother further troubleshooting or RMAing the board.)

5 out of 5 eggsThe performance you need

Pros: Everything on the board runs cool in my cramped thermaltake SD101 case. But the ASUS AI Suite 3 software is incredible, and it makes owning THIS motherboard, over any other H87 motherboard, worth your time. It's has exceptional control of your fans, making this whisper quiet (as possible) in silent mode. During times where there isn't stress, the fans turn off, and I love it! The UEFI (Bios) is simple to use and extremely clever.

Cons: One of my capacitors was soldered on crooked, and the solder-motherboard interface is barely holding the capacitors lead. But... as a stressor I've been running Folding@Home continuously for 3 days (100% cpu load) without any issues.

5 out of 5 eggstop mini itx MB

Pros: put this MB into Silverstone mini itx case with an i7-4770K cpu. I used the one pci-e slot for a very fast OCZ revodrive 3 X2 harddrive device. There are plenty of USB 3.0 and Sata3 slots and there is MB raid for expansion. MB works fine with no heat problems and no issues of any sort. It is quiet. We are not using a Video card relying on the CPU as this is in a business environment with heavy multitasking.

Cons: If we leave the Asus software for OC up we get crashes in a few days. Once you are happy shift the software settings to the bios and you won't get crashes.

Other Thoughts: We might upgrade by changing to some raid 0 SSDs and putting a video card in the freed up PCI-e slot. We have some AMD cpus on Asus MBs in the office too but AMD cannot compete if you want raw power in a small form factor as distinct from an ATX case where It surpasses an intel cpu without a video card IF paired with a video card.
