5 out of 5 eggsnice motherboard

Pros: Nice compact motherboard with all the features I need for a basic Linux box that does backups and mostly runs unattended. I built a system around this motherboard in a few minutes. I have not been using Asus motherboards for a while, but after two DOA Gigabyte motherboards in a row, I decided to give Asus a try. I'm liking the Vanguard TUF series so far and would build more systems with it.

Cons: Not a lot of cons to this motherboard if it meets your needs. I don't have any complaints about the layout.

Other Thoughts: Vanguard TUF motherboards are definitely at the top of my list right now.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems

Pros: Board has functioned flawlessly since I purchased it 10 months ago.
Has some support for overclocking (but see cons).

Cons: Overclocking the CPU multiplier results in a fixed CPU voltage, regardless of CPU frequency. EIST still functions in the sense that it can reduce the CPU frequency under light load, but that doesn't save any power because the CPU voltage no longer drops when the frequency drops. The board does not have an option to overclock the processor memory controller.

Asus does not bother to document the motherboard sensors. It has a Nuvoton NCT 6791D chip, which can be read using the Linux nct6775 kernel module, and will give you fan speeds and various voltages, leaving it up to you to guess which is which.

The oscillator on the board I purchased is slightly slow, resulting in a 3.5 Ghz processor running at 3.49190 Ghz. Obviously the performance loss is trivial.

Other Thoughts: The marketing emphasis with this board is on reliability. The Asus B85M-E/CSM motherboard has almost the same features, but I decided to spend a few more bucks for the Vangaurd B85, and I'm happy with the result.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product at a great price!

Pros: Great product for a workstation or small gaming PC. If you need an all purpose PC that will do a bit of everything and need it at an affordable price, this is the motherboard for you. Price is right for the features. This motherboard works great and gets the job done.

Cons: None, it fits my purpose perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsBuilt TUF, overclockable with any K processors, LGA1150 last socket to support Windows 7, and somewhat good value...

Pros: Built TUF quality, 5-year warranty, DisplayPort output, last one with Windows 7 support, and 8-pin CPU power input. Most likely this will be discontinued soon due to low-sales, and there probably won't be a TUF B-series model in upcoming LGA1151 socket. The new LGA1151 socket no longer has Windows 7 support.

Cons: Like all Asus motherboards, they tend to be more-expensive and overpriced compare to other brands. Also, I found Asus the most difficult brand to set up and install. Asus also likes to discontinue models fast. Fortunately, I got this a good deal by purchasing this at Micro Center instead at Newegg, or I wouldn't even bother spending my dime with Asus. I'm still not a big fan of Asus regardless of what they tell me, despite I am impressed with this board.

Other Thoughts: Want to give everyone heads-up on this board and the actual quality and features of it. This Asus Vanguard B85 mATX motherboard is the entry-level and cheapest model of their TUF series lineup, which all carry a 5-year warranty. It is designed to maximize your peace of mind with computing and minimize your fear of any motherboard failure or data lost.

It is packaged very nicely in a matte brown box with some hints of Cadillac-quality feel in it. Manual book is nicely detailed. It also comes with a certificate paper that passed all the maximum rigorous tests from the Asus factory.

Like other reviewers have said, this board is unlocked, and you can overclock any Intel K processors you like as well as Pentium G3258. I'm using Pentium G3258 right now overclocked at 4.4 GHz.

Also, this is the least-expensive Asus motherboard you can find with DisplayPort output in case HDMI doesn't suit you. It has both, and it may be possible to output both DisplayPort and HDMI at the same time (haven't tried this yet).

It also supports Crossfire (also haven't tried this yet), and I like the 8-pin CPU power input that is included in most certified-rated power supply.

Overall, nice TUF build-quality overall for the price you're paying. This will be my first and last Asus motherboard as I always dislike their higher prices plus they're more difficult to install and set up compared with other leading brands, such as Gigabyte, ASRock, MSI, Biostar, and ECS.

1 out of 5 eggsI'll never know

Pros: ---

Cons: Arrived DOA. Wouldn't post. I could have sent this in RMA, but had an accident while packing and some pins became smashed in on the CPU slot while closing the clamp. I won't get into the details and yes it was a dumb mistake which caused this issue, but the board wouldn't work at all right out of the box. First time ever having a faulty board through ASUS, so I can't be too negative of the brand, but since I won't ever be able to replace this board, I have to give it the lowest rating since it is as useful as a box of rocks. I've never ever had an accident like the one which bent some pins, but since that small amount of damage voids my ability to return a faulty product, I have a slightly bad taste in my mouth.

Other Thoughts: If I had been able to get a replacement, I might have better thoughts on this motherboard. It was supposed to be for my boys computer for Christmas. I just bought a Sabertooth and hopefully I won't have an issue with that.

Don't let my review completely sway you away from purchasing this motherboard. Like I said, I might have had better luck with the RMA, but I'll never know, so I have to rate accordingly and I have a $100 door stop.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Analog line-out audio

Pros: Decent board for the price, provided you have no need for analog line out audio. The headphone out seems to work fine.

Cons: The analog line out on my board was noisy, and the line out jack was a bit looser than the other analog audio jacks on the back panel. I can hear a scraping noise from the speakers as I resize windows. This is probably digital noise feeding over into the analog audio sub-system. (to be kind it could have been a faulty cable. Check other reviews to see if I am the only one who saw this problem.) In any case I found a work around. I use the HDMI digital audio out by connecting my receiver to the analog audio jacks on my flat panel TV.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Asus Vanguard B85 is overclockable

Pros: People keep saying the Asus Vanguard B85 is not overclockable. That is completelely false. You can overclock any component you wish on the Asus Vanguard B85. There are simple one-click settings to overclock any of your overclockable components in the BIOS. A pro for this board is how easy it makes overclocking your CPU, GPU and RAM. Don't blame the board if you bought a locked CPU and weren't able to overclock it. It's your fault if you bought the wrong component. If your CPU is unlocked, you can easily overclock it with the Asus Vanguard B85.

Cons: None, unless you're the kind of person who buys a budget mobo and then complains when it doesn't have the ability to make you tea and doesn't have 4K-capable onboard graphics.

5 out of 5 eggsAlready bought a second one

Pros: Very stable
4 memory slots
On-board audio sounds great
Plenty of USB 3.0 ports
Lots of display connections (VGA / DVI / HDMI / DisplayPort)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I built two systems for friends using this board already and both are performing fine. This motherboard is very high quality and I would recommend it if you are not looking to overclock and run your graphics cards in SLI.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS VANGUARD

Pros: So for I just wanted a upgrade, I put in OS Ubuntu 13 just to get rid of windows all together. Its damm great mobo! Its as fast as I thought, plus it had a pci slot, I made sure of that. (Yes I still have a few pci cards some where.)

Cons: None so for......................................

Other Thoughts: I put in 3.4ghz p4 in it. Ubuntu 13, I have 2 sicks 8gb each of Crucial ballstix ram/memory. With 2 more slots to fill. That's great to know for the further. I have 512mb Asus gpu pcie that I plan to putting in. Like I said, I wanted to do without windows all together. So I did. After this I don't know.
