2 out of 5 eggsUnstable

Pros: Seems fast and flexible. Amazing BIOS setup program. Multiple ways to update BIOS.

Cons: Versions of Ubuntu prior to 14.04 will not work out of the box because of this boards Intel I218-V chip.

This board is unstable even with the latest 1304 BIOS released 5 Aug 2014.

The instability seemed to wreak havoc with the other *wired* devices on my network.

Other Thoughts: I never buy "gamer" boards like Asus anymore; only Intel-brand mobo's for the last decade. Unfortunately Intel does not make a board for their OWN 4790K processor! C'mon Intel!

I really had high hopes for this board. I really just wanted any board that would Just-Work (tm). No overclocking, no external graphic cards, no water coolers, latest 1304 BIOS released 5 Aug 2014, F5 Load Optimized Defaults. I just want _simplicity_, _stability_ and speed of the 4790K for financial calculations, not games. (I used to be gamer in the 1990's and was into overclocking and actually had TWO 3dfx's Voodoo dual SLI for playing the original DOOM until Nvidia came and ate their lunch with a single card, but I digress..)

The first issue came up when I tried to boot into Ubunto 12.04. No network connectivity at all. Even the Ubuntu 12.04 boot CD cannot access the network with this board. A little research revealed its because of no drivers for the Intel I218-V LAN controller on this board. Good news is, it is supported by the very latest Ubuntu 14.04. I wasn't ready to upgrade and its a pain but, okay, I can live with upgrading the OS along with this new board and processor.

After a clean format and install of 14.04, I could actually access the network. Unfortunately, put to any kind of heavy load results in daily lockups. CPU temps running fine in the 70's and 80's (C) under full load (with an occasional spikes into the 90's IIRC).

The lockup problems seem to be related to the I218-V networking because, upon finding a locked machine in the morning (sometimes with a frozen video image, sometimes with no video signal at all), I also found that ALL of my WIRED network devices on the same network were no longer accessible at all. Only a cold reboot of the router would allow them to regain access.

Amazingly, even when all the wired devices were in this disconnected state, the *wireless* devices could still connect to the internet through the router, but not to any of the wired devices. And none of the wired devices could connect to anything (the internet or each other) until the router was rebooted.

This is why I don't buy gamer boards like Asus. After messing around for over a week, now have to rip this out, pack it up, ship it back to newegg. That's just the way it goes sometimes when you build your own, but I never had a single problem with Intel-brand board..

I've decided to try one of the Gigabyte boards which advertises with "Tested with 168 Hours Server Grade Testing". Hey, at least they ADVERTISE about stability, instead of about overclocking and gaming. Wish me luck..

4 out of 5 eggsSecond Board in, Running Great!

Pros: The board has nice aesthetics, featuring a light gold finish on the heatsinks and a black PCB that makes it fit in well with nearly any design scheme.

The UEFI CMOS is quite nice, with a decent balance of a nice GUI yet a strong list of options (I always set my CMOS to open in advanced mode).

6-way optimization. I've played with this a bit, and have been pleasantly surprised. The software isn't as dialed in as a manual calibration can manage, but it works for a quick and dirty OC. The fan speed and system temps are also a nice feature.

Space. I am planning on adding a second GPU in crossfire, on top of my current GPU and wireless NIC. The Z97 spec is quite nice in this regard.

Cons: I lost my first board to burn-in failure. This is really just an unfortunate instance of bad luck, and Newegg's RMA team was excellent, so I cannot drop an egg here.

However, aside from the core ASUS utility, the other utilities are worse than useless. Don't even try to use the re-skinned CPU-Z utility; the GUI is cut off in a way that the right side information isn't visible, and the window isn't re-sizeable. The in-program OC features can brick your device without certain intel drivers, yet for some strange reason, ASUS doesn't include those. At least it gives you a nice annoying popup to warn you about this... after the first boot.

Other Thoughts: If you want a solid board, get this. The software is a minor complaint. The board itself is an excellent piece of hardware.

1 out of 5 eggsSomething Just not Right

Pros: Looks nice... Decent software. Lots of features.

Cons: Board just doesnt act right. Have tested every other part all checks out system specs are as follows.
i7 4790k
Asus Z97-Pro
Evga 850 G2 80 gold
780ti dual classified
G.Skill Tridents

During use in windows 7 64 it is very sluggish, windows will skip & Trail when moving. Opening programs is VERY very slow. Just a faulty Or very bad performing motherboard. Will try a few more things then RMA back to Newegg.

Other Thoughts: On a side not my previous build was an ASUS Z77 V LK and I had to RMA 2 boards before I got my computer to work. So I am guessing ASUS is just outsourcing their boards and their quality has REALLY dipped over the years after I RMA this board i am going to try a different brand. Never had an issue with EVGA and I think i should go that route.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Rdizz,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard. If you have not contacted NewEgg for an exchange already, please let me know and we can discuss your case as well as setting up an RMA with ASUS. When you have the chance, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you have tried so far including your reference number within the subject line, and we can discuss this case further. Thank you. Cs#N140935189

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed

Pros: Very attractive board. Looks quality but... RMA

Cons: Quality doesn't compare to the old ASUS boards where you got a lot of "extras" thrown in. ASUS used to be the clear premium boards. Now, not so much.

Other Thoughts: Would not POST. Memory LED stayed red. I had F!@'s do a diagnostic and the memory slots were bad. Bought an ASUS Sabertooth MK 2 at Fr!@s to replace, and it was bad too.
I thought the odds of getting 2 bad boards from ASUS were unlikely, until I saw that 20% of the reviews were from RMA's. The percentage for other manufacturers is about the same. But, somehow, I expected better from ASUS.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Dan,

I am sorry that you encountered problems with both motherboards sir. Did you Return or exchange either board as of yet? If you have not contacted NewEgg for an exchange already, please let me know and we can discuss your case as well as setting up an RMA with ASUS. When you have the chance, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps Fry's tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Cs#N140907661

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Z97-PRO

Pros: Sold, stable, and tons of OC features.

Cons: I was planning to install 6 HDDs (3 X RAID0) with ATAPI and hot swap SDD dock . . . could not do because of ASMedia. ASMedia SATA ports only support data drives (no RAID) - I wish I could use these for ATAPI device. Not the fault of ASUS, however.

Other Thoughts: Absolutely no hassle - good quality board.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointed Asus Fan

Pros: Too early to tell.

Cons: This board has serious problems with its fan headers. I installed this board in an Antec Nine Hundred case. This case has three 120mm case fans and one 140mm case fan.

I installed the 140mm case fan on the CHA3_FAN header. The header provided appropriate power to the fan as it worked fine but the fan speed reported in the BIOS ranged from 560rpm to 11800rpm. It kept trying to bounce back and forth. I plugged the 140mm fan into the CPUOPT_FAN header and the BIOS reported the correct speed, around 420rpm. I also plugged a 120mm fan into CHA3_FAN and the BIOS reported the correct speed. So for some reason the CHA3_FAN header just could not deal with the 140mm fan.

The other problem I had with this board was that when the board lost power (i.e. when I unplugged it for a few minutes) and then power was restored the CHA1_FAN header would not detect the 120mm fan that was installed and the 120mm fan would not spin up, basically it did not get power. This only happened the first time that the PC was booted after having lost power. Every time it was booted after that the 120mm fan on CHA1_FAN was correctly detected and successfully powered up. Until the PC lost power again. Then the fan would not be detected and would not spin up.

I opened a couple of support cases on the ASUS website and spoke to one of their online technicians and he said he had not heard of any problems like this and that I should RMA the board. Since I had only gotten it from New Egg a couple of days before I decided to return it to New Egg instead. Thank you New Egg!!!!

So I figured I must have gotten unlucky with that board so I went out and bought another one at a local retailer for substantially more money only to have the exact same problem with that board.

I even flashed both boards with the latest BIOS, 1304, and still had the same problems.

I used to think of ASUS as the Rock of Gibraltar when it came to motherboards but after this experience I worry about what else is messed up on these Z97 boards. Not sure what I am going to do, I guess I will take a look at some Z97 boards from other manufacturers.

Other Thoughts: Not sure what happened with these boards. I used to be able to count on ASUS.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board, few quirks still working out

Pros: Nice features, very purdy looking

Cons: annoying long post times (issue I am trying to resolve stil)

Other Thoughts: new system, i7 4790k cpu, 16gb ram, supernova 1000 ps, r9 290 gpu. takes 5 to 10 seconds to post.. shows post screen fine, then goes blank for 30 seconds to 3 minutes, then will boot into windows and work normally. Trying to find bios setting or something to what is causing this. Using latest bios as of today.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus Great, NE sucks

Pros: Solid board, easy set up, everything works on this one. went together quick and booted straight away. Just be sure to check rev number: 6030 bios will need to be flashed to support 4790K devils canyon Cpu's.

Cons: 1st board rec'd wouldn't post. Q code 76. Even contacted Asus support to troubleshoot. Could not correct problem. Not really a big deal...unless you need to RMA it...See below.

Other Thoughts: Do not RMA your board to Asus. They will just say you bent the Cpu socket pins and expect you to pay full price for a new one...or offer 10% off if you argue. Argue enough and you might get promised a little more off a purchase, but only after you pay full price initially, then wait around for them to reimburse your CC or or PP Still waiting after 7 days for this to actually happen, even though customer service emailed me in writing it would happen.

Don't expect any emails to customer service to be answered either. Two sent ...no reply after 9 days.

Used to be very pleased with NE once upon a time ...Not anymore. Recommend NOT buying MB, or Cpu's from NE if for any reason you need to return them You're hosed. I now own a great $170.00 MB that only cost me $310.00 in the end..Thanks NE =/

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product!

Pros: Straightforward installation and setup
Easy to diagnose issues
Quite a few features that allow for heavy customization/overclocking

Cons: Documentation is a bit deceptive

Other Thoughts: I tried to remove one of my memory sticks from its slot using the method described in the manual (undo the clip, pull the memory straight out), but the non-clipped side of the stick wouldn't remove. Especially confusing because I inserted the stick by pushing it straight down. Turns out that there's a one-way metal clip that keeps the memory in, so you have to undo the manual clip and kind of pivot the memory out of the slot.

This isn't a fault of the motherboard, just a documentation oversight and user error. The documentation really should be corrected, though.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat mother board

Pros: Very easy to use for OC. I have the i7-4770K paired with this board and after a few minutes it is up to 4.3GHz.

I am using this MOB for transcoding video (which uses the full system resources). I have tested this setup transcoding videos for 6+hrs straight and not one issue thus far. So far very pleased.

Cons: None
