Maximus VII Hero: Your 2014 ROG Upgrade!

Last year's Hero smashed onto the PC gamer and enthusiast builder scene – easily the most popular ROG board to date! It goes without saying then that 2014's Maximus VII Hero would have a lot to live up to. So, thankfully, it's had a huge upgrade and a big splash of cool design. Have a look at this:

ASUS Motherboard

The sharp aesthetic design is drawn throughout its creation; from painted, matte black PCB to the heatsink, to the (optionally) illuminated Z97 heatsink. The keen-eyed will also notice no more white clips as the whole board is now totally red and black!

ASUS Motherboard

The Hero supports all current Intel 4th Generation (Haswell, Haswell-refresh) and future 5th Generation (Broadwell) CPUs on LGA1150. The Extreme Engine DIGI+ III hardware includes 8 + 2-phase power, NexFET™ Power Block MOSFET, 60A Ferrite Chokes, and 10K Black Metallic Capacitors to make overclocking a cinch.

On the memory front there's support for four DDR3 DIMMS up to and beyond 3,200MHz, depending on what kit you choose to pair it with.

ASUS Motherboard

Within its price-range it's also the only board with rear bracing/heatspreaders for the VRMs, too!

ASUS Motherboard

While top-side, the heatsink has a nickel-plated heatpipe cunningly tucked deep into its design to improve cooling.

ASUS Motherboard
ASUS Motherboard

The rear IO features two USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, combination PS2 keyboard and mouse, HDMI out, DVI out, dsub out, USB BIOS Flashback, RJ45 Intel I218V Gigabit Ethernet port with LANGuard (and GameFirst III), S/PDIF out and 6x 3.5mm audio jacks from the SupremeFX 2014.

ASUS Motherboard

In the box there's also a metallic black Q-shield to cover the rear IO.

ASUS Motherboard

The audio front packs SupremeFX 2014. This includes ROG technologies like SupremeFX Shielding over the sound codec, ELNA premium audio capacitors, ELNA premium audio capacitors, DTS Connect, and ROG exclusive enhancements such as Sonic SoundStage, Sonic SenseAmp, Sonic Studio and Sonic Radar II.

ASUS Motherboard

The SupremeFX Shield gets a flash of ROG Redline, too.

The PCI-Express layout is aimed at (most commonly) two-way SLI and CrossFire users with its two, red PCI-Express x16 slots providing 1 x 16 or 2 x 8 from the CPU. If you're using more GPUs, wait for our Computex announcements!

Three open-ended PCI-Express x1 slots, a PCI-Express x16 (x4 electrically) and the M.2 (PCI-E x2) slot are all connected to the Z97 PCH. Note that due to the limitation in number of available Z97 PCI-Express lanes, these PCI-Express lanes are shared. The default setting is Auto Mode, which automatically assigns the PCI-Express lanes, meaning if you install a PCI-Express x4 device into the bottom slot, the system will automatically detect and disable the x1 slots and M.2 slot.

ASUS Motherboard

The red heatsink stripe is extended further along the motherboard PCB.

The M.2 port support PCI-Express x2 devices up to 2280 (80mm long), giving the latest 10Gbps extreme performance. Since it's PCI-Express based it does not eat up one of the eight SATA III ports when used, giving you the maximum storage potential and best performance, all the time.

ASUS Motherboard

Onboard buttons include the usual power, rest, Clear CMOS, MemOK! tester and new Sonic SoundStage switcher and KeyBot on/off.

ASUS Motherboard

Flip the board over, and you can find the KeyBot hardware IC, too.

ASUS Motherboard

On the bundled software disc you'll get these to use with your new build:

  • ROG GameFirst III
  • ROG RAMDisk
  • ROG CPU-Z
  • ROG Mem TweakIt
  • Kaspersky® Anti-Virus
  • DAEMON Tools Pro Standard
  • ASUS WebStorage
  • Home Cloud
  • ASUS Utilities

5 out of 5 eggsAsus Maximus vii Hero

Pros: Great mobo. First time building a pc. Product arrived in great condition. Easy to install and setup. If its your first time building a gaming pc this motherboard is for you. Looks great runs flawless.

Cons: Only has four case fan headers. With three case fans and an H105 I am maxed out unless I buy an adapter.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat except mine broke

Pros: Outstanding design, logical placement of everything, extensive over clocking ability

Cons: Now the bad news. I installed one of these boards seven months ago and a week ago it just died - the internal power button just blinked at me. It will take about 10 days to get a new board from ASUS so I had buy a new one (this one). I needed it for work too. I installed the new board and it fired right up.

Other Thoughts: ASUS makes great boards and I have never had one fail. I was shocked, especially since it worked perfectly for seven months.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Smarc,

On behalf of ASUS, I want to thank you for using our product and we also want you to know that we appreciate your effort in posting this. Even though you have issues with your old board you still purchase another one and gave it a 3 star review. I understand that the power button is not working anymore. If that is the case, it's a hardware issue. In order to fix the issue, we need to RMA the board. If you don't have an RMA, I can create one for you. Please just provide me with your full name, mailing address, phone number, and the serial number of the motherboard and email it to me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N1503101063 in the subject line for your reference.

I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department is dedicated to bringing a resolution for all issues related to our products.

5 out of 5 eggsbuy it, you will like it.

Pros: I upgraded my system from a Gigabyte Z68xp-ud3 board and a 2500K processor. This board with a 4690K processor is a fantastic combination. I have it overclocked to 4.6 and cooled with a cooler master Hyper 212 plus cooler. The memory is 16 GB of Dominator Platinum memory running at 1866. This board is rock steady and the temp. is running in the mid-30s C. It was easy to setup and has great features such as key bot, sound stage and much more. The cool color scheme with and lighting are a nice added touch.

Cons: None at this point.

1 out of 5 eggsJust won't run high end games

Pros: Seems easy enough to setup. Custom fan profiles are nice.

Cons: Most unstable motherboard I have ever used. I have been building custom rigs for over 20 years. I work in the tech industry (including 10 years in customer support) and this motherboard has been terrible. First it was the Audio Drivers, then the Intel RapidStorage Drivers - but ultimately my Windows Reliability History has never been higher than a 5 out of 10 - because I can only play demanding games for about 10 minutes before this thing crashes. And no, it doesn't just crash to desktop - it drops straight to fully powered down.

PC diagnostics show that the temps for both CPU and MB are both below 40C when it is crashing and I have absolutely 0 overclocking going on here. Oh, and I have a 1200W PSU, so that isn't the issue.

Other Thoughts: I've had many motherboards over the years - and they are always the centerpiece of any build. For the price of this motherboard it should be absolutely rock solid.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Shane,

I want to thank you for using our product and we appreciate your effort in posting this review. I understand that you have issue with the motherboard since it's crashing when you're playing games. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue have caused you. I know that you have mentioned that you did not overclock it, can you please try and update the drivers and underclock the motherboard. If you want to discuss this matter further, please email me at customerloyalt@asus.com and put case # N150375871 in the subject line for your reference.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Board - Great build quality but.....

Pros: Easy assembly and BIOS setup. Everything worked on start up except for two issues.

Cons: Two Issues:
1. Mouse doesn't work after exiting BIOS. As soon it boots to windows, it stops working.
2. No Internet access through LAN port.

Tried everything including BIOS firmware update to latest version today. Issues remain... :(

Other Thoughts: Tried the following:
- Called Asus and they recommended doing the BIOS firmware update. Downloaded latest Firnware from Asus website, extracted file and renamed to M7H.CAP and updated BIOS successfully through USB BIOS Flashback port but issues still remain.
- Managed to get to Device manager using keyboard and noticed LAN and some USB drivers are missing. Downloaded latest LAN driver from Asus onto flash drive for installation but computer wont read the flash drive in any USB port. Strange because they do work for keyboard and mouse (in BIOS only).
Any thoughts would be highly appreciated!.....especially since this is my second Asus mobo. The first was a Asus Maximus VI Hero which suddenly stopped to output display to my new monitor after only a year.... :(

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Purchase

Pros: Easy to Install I use Gskill Sniper Seires 16GB Ram and an I5 4690K Proc and this thing is smooth. Overclocks like a dream (currently 4.2Ghz) using the DEEPCOOL NEPTWIN CPU Cooler 6 Heatpipes Twin-tower Heatsink Dual 120mm Fans with Blue LED One with PWM Support ... everything fits with no issues...and the fact that uit has an M.2 Socket is a HUGH bonus

Cons: I do not like the sound system's interface but that's nothing to knock it down for.

Other Thoughts: I love the Asus ROG line it is some of the best hardware I have ever used.

1 out of 5 eggsWish it worked properly

Pros: Looks great with red LEDs and matching G.Skill RAM and Asus
HD 7850 GPU.

Cons: Won't boot or power up using memory in dual channel mode. Ruled out the memory since I used one at a time and got POST in second DIMM slot.

Other Thoughts: Unless I can figure out why the tested memory won't work on this board it will be returned. I'm not running a gaming system with only 8gb of memory.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear John,

Which RAM are you using? Are you trying to boot using XMP or just normally? Have you updated your BiOS 2401 which improves system stability? It was posted on 3/6/2015. 1 out of 5 eggsStill Prefer Asus

Pros: Excellent onboard sound, uefi bios user friendly, great color scheme.

Cons: I have had boot issues with this board since I installed it last August. Sometimes when I power up the boot process starts, then stops on the ROG screen where it states press delete or f2 to enter bios and it just sits there. I do not overclock, so that is not the issue. It is completely unresponsive to keyboard commands, and pressing the power or reset button results in shutting off the pc for about 5 seconds and the process starts over. The only way i have managed to fix this is remove all cables, cards, and clear cmos. Have had to do this several times. Bios updates didn't help either. It did it again yesterday, and nothing I've tried has worked this time. Now it has a black screen when powered on. Tested/swapped memory, video cards, and power supply with no change. Pulled it out and ordered a different board, the Z97 deluxe. This board seems to be plagued with design flaws since you can google this issue and find many people have experienced this and similar issues.

Other Thoughts: I am still a huge fan of Asus products and have built dozens of computers using their boards and video cards, and this is the first dud I have ever received.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Simtech,

It seems you have taken the time to troubleshoot a few things. I apologize for the inconvenience this has placed on you with your board not booting. I understang this can be very frustrating as its the backbone of the entire system. Have you contact our support channels in regards to this? If not please use case # N150368556 I have created for you to reference your issue when contacting us. We're here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department is dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Sincerely,

Adam
