1 out of 5 eggsECS KBN-I/2100 DOA

Pros: I purchased this product because I wanted a low power HTPC. The rebate was added incentive. The rebate did finally arrive but I still can't use the motherboard.

Cons: I am unable to get this motherboard/CPU combo to display any output (neither VGA and/or HDMI). I contacted ECS directly via their support site got a response with generic how-to. I re-installed and re-wired the motherboard 3 times just in case I made a mistake. I tested the power supply with a tester. I purchased another power supply - Cosair CX430. Still unable to get this system to power up. I attempted to contact ECS for a 2nd time requested a replacement but did not get a response back.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little board

Pros: Works for MythTV with latest open source 'radeon' driver and VDPAU for 720p/1080i video playback with low CPU utilization.

Though it's fanless, it has two fan headers and the BIOS will do temperature-controlled variable fan speed control via PWM.

Cons: A 24-pin ATX power connector is required, 20-pin does not work.

If you use a latching SATA cable, the heatsink is in the way so you can't get your finger in to unlatch your cable -- have to use a tool.

Other Thoughts: There have been reports of NIC driver issues under Linux, but I've had zero problems on Debian Jessie, which I assume already has the latest/correct drivers.

2 out of 5 eggsWaste of time & money

Pros: fanless
small profile

Cons: Network adapter shuts off too early to use outside of OS
Slower than expected

Other Thoughts: Have built several systems, so I know my way around. Build this to use on the living room entertainment system, but utilize my SiliconeDust HDHomerun Prime tuner. Didn`t expect a high end gaming system, but did expect something that would run as a HTPC for a basic setup. Had a hard time steaming videos over the network and was slow as hell to load programs. Figured I`d try to help it by upgrading the HD from the standard 250gb HD to an SSD drive. That`s where the poor design really falls flat. While trying to reinstall the system onto the new SSD from my home server, I discovered that the Realtek drivers don`t function properly, requiring you to DL the drivers from Realtek and load them on a thumb drive. But don`t bother, because the ethernet jack shuts down after a couple minutes, while the WHS Restore software is installing. No ethernet, no finding the server, no restore. Going to have to order a USB/ethernet adapter to even get it up running. Too much work for too little reward. Going to keep an eye out for an alternative setup.

1 out of 5 eggsDont bother - it wont last

Pros: Low power use, true x86_64 cpu thats fast enough to do some real work. Holds 32GB of ram, and you could use it as a KVM virtual machine host, but its likely too slow for most guests. Works great as a firewall or file server, or even a basic desktop.

Cons: I've purchased one of these and two of the ECS KBN-I/5200 AMD A6-5200 Quad Core, and they have all died after a few months of light use. I usually never have problems with ECS motherboards, but I think from now on I'll buy other brands.

4 out of 5 eggsUbuntu 14.04.1

Pros: * Fanless
* Mini pcie slots
* Low power
* 64 bit
* Painless to install Ubuntu

Cons: No mini pcie screws

Other Thoughts: Installed Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 via USB stick to SSD.
Installed Ubuntu Desktop packages (gnome flashback) and converted to graphical boot.
Attached to Dell touch screen.
Works great as a desktop and as a kiosk.

It would have been nice if the mini pcie screws were included.
Mini pcie screw size CM2.5x3(3.5?)

4 out of 5 eggsgood for xmbc (kodi), bad for freenas

Pros: Video and cpu good enough for media player. I used Openelec which is embedded xbmc (new name kodi) that one can install on flash drive . No noise, power consumption is little.

Cons: Network adapter (NIC) doesn't work on freebsd based nas4free and freenas systems. only 2 SATA ports.

Other Thoughts: It is possible to make a recent FreeBSD snapshot and make NIC (network) on FreeBSD system work but it is not a piece of cake as well it won't be an embedded system that one can install on a flashdrive and keep SATA ports for data.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat HTPC set!

Pros: Great low power board for playing HD video. I currently run windows 8.1 and xbmc off of a 32gb ssd, and a 1.5tb hd for media. It runs 1080p with ease.

Cons: It is a bit slow with streaming content but that's because only the processor is handling that, and loses the benefit of the great GPU on the chip. I wish it had a USB 3.0 header on the board.

4 out of 5 eggsbasic, basic computing.

Pros: Tiny ITX form factor.
fairly inexpensive
sips power.

Cons: Single channel memory only
Slow

Other Thoughts: I would recommend something like this if you wanted a very very basic file server.
There's only two SATA ports on the board so you're pretty well stuck with 8 TB (4x4) if you go that route.

I bought this for 30 bucks after coupons for my wife, who uses multiple computers to print out coupons. I have this, along with several other small computer systems cobbled together from free after rebate promotional parts, and set them all up for remote access so she can use them to print multiples of coupons, getting around software limits imposed by coupon sites.
It works great for that purpose, but I wouldn't ever use this for personal use.
Subjectively, when paired with a 32GB SSD and 2GB of DDR3 RAM it's still a bit slow in Windows 7, and will struggle to play even 720P video without lagging on youtube. Flash heavy sites also bog down the computer.

If you're thinking of picking one up to use as an HTPC, I would invest a few bucks more and go higher. You'll be glad you did.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fanless, quite, low power consumption

Cons: Can't get the 8111E network adapter work under Windows 8.1 with default driver or the driver downloaded from Realtek.

Other Thoughts: It is slow, but it should be expected. I use it as a HTPC and home NAS and it is good enough.
