DFI has long had a notable reputation within the overclocking community and their DK 790GX-M2RS motherboard continues the trend. Based on AMD's 790FX and SB750 chipsets, it is ready to host the latest AM2+ Phenom quad-core processors along with other Phenom and Athlon single- and multi-core CPUs using the AM2 or AM2+ socket type.
Up to 8GB of DDR2 1066 can be installed with dual channel and Hyper Transport 3.0 technology providing increased performance. AMD OverDrive offers further increases in performance tuning using Advanced Clock Calibration. A pair of PCI-Express 2.0 x16 cards can be mounted for cutting-edge graphic power with multiple configurations of Hybrid CrossFireX or CrossFire combinations with support for Microsoft DirectX 10 and DVI output.
Get eight channels of HD sound from the Realteck ALC885 audio codec with high-performance DAC's offering 106db dynamic range. Connect up to six SATA devices at 3Gb/s for high-speed data transfers as well as the option for multiple RAID configurations. Integrated Gigabit Ethernet LAN allows bottleneck-free connections to other network devices at broadband speeds and a half-dozen USB 2.0 ports along with an IEEE 1394 connector allow for nearly unlimited possibilities in connecting peripheral devices.

Pros: I bought this board because I had issues with an earlier DFI M2R with the early 790FX chipset. First thing I noticed was much lower temps all around, partly due to better cooling, but also the chipset must have been improved. System and PWM temps dropped from ~55C to ~38C. Cpu (Phenom 9850) went from 38C at idle to 27C. Yes, it sound impossible, but that's what it's idling at, both in WinXP and Kubuntu 8.04. Load temps dropped similarly. DFI has some wonderful exclusive features such as the onboard diagnostic LED. I don't think I'll ever get a board without that feature now. Also the reset switches are handy. I tried the advanced clock calibration (ACC) setting in AMD Overdrive (AOD) and my Phenom 9850 easily clocked to 3.0Ghz with no voltage increase or other changes in about 5 minutes. Sweet. However, I dropped it back to 2.5Ghz because it's already way fast eanough, and I prefer a cooler, more reliable system over one that's unnecessarily pushed to the limit.
Cons: Absolutely no way to use onboard graphics. If you look closely at the pictures you'll see no video jacks, no vga or dvi video jacks on the back of the board. There is a proprietary jack in the middle of the board, but no cable to route it to the back of the case. The DFI manual mentions a cable, but it's not included, and I can't find it on their site. Maybe they'll offer it later... So, if you want onboard graphics, get the micro-atx version of this board (Lanparty Jr).
Other Thoughts: I looked at the more expensive DFI 790GX + FX board, but decided to stay away from the 790FX chipset. As I understand it, the790FX chipset is primarily of value if you're running crossfire because you get 16 pci lanes instead of 8 to each of your video cards. However, I read that it doesn't make any difference for most cards, they don't need the full 16. Keep things simple.
I'm running an ATI 4850 with no problems. The Bios is packed with more settings than you can shake a stick at. I dualboot WinXP and Kubuntu 8.04 Linux . Not a single issue with drivers on either one.
I'm not a performance maniac, but it's nice to know the new Deneb CPUs will drop right in.
Finally my Phenom 9850 feels at home. Good job DFI.
Also thanks to Newgg for their prompt and friendly service.

No external video connection

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: less than 1 day
Pros: Has some really great features.
Cons: See "other thoughts".
Other Thoughts: Just thought it was worth pointing out that while this mb has onboard video (ATI Radeon HD 3300), it does not actually have an external video connection. You can see for yourself in the pictures. I've been looking at motherboards and this was a top contender, until I noticed that in the picture. I've done some research and it does have a _internal_ DVI connection on the mb, but that's all. According to what I've read, DFI is supposed to be creating an adapter to an external connection, but, AFAIK, that adapter is not available yet. So, if you're planning on using the onboard video, you might want to look at another mb, or make sure that an adapter is available.
Just wanted to point this out before someone else makes the same mistake I almost did. I'm not counting this as a "con" because it's not really a problem if you're using a separate video card.

Pros: Great board. I haven't had any issues at all.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: If I had bought it after all these bad reviews were on here I might have been scared off, in fact, I'm writing this review just because I see this board is being reviewed poorly, so hopefully I can offset that.
Its worked great, worked great out of the box, needed minimal BIOS adjustments, has a great BIOS. Stuff is located in nice places. Its altogether a great board. I have no regrets.

Pros: none
Cons: Waste of money and time. Never worked properly and I didn't have the time to send it back. DFI's customer support is completely nonexistent. For those that said they had a hard time with people on the phone I have to ask how did you get someone to actually talk to you? Anyway its in the garbage now and I've gone with a more reliable brand.

1 sorry board

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It was in a box
Cons: The worst board I've ever owned. Tech support from DFI is terrible. They have messed around so much I don't want to deal with them any more. I wrote to tech support explaining the problems with my board and I recieved an e-mail reply asking me to tell them what was wrong with the board, to get a RMA # you have to fill out a form with the problems you are experiencing. How many times do I have to give my LONG list of probs. and the guy even had the nerve to get an attitude with me. I feel like DFI stole my hard earned money
Other Thoughts: If you value your money stay away from DFI
