dimm slots defective
- Pros: fairly cheap board
- Cons: many manufacturer issues. two of my DIMM memory slots are defective (unable to read memory). I first bought the board with 2GB memory but I just purchase 4GB (2x2GB) and I find out two slot will not read the memory. I don' even want to test the others. Also you will have to update BIOS constantly due to manufacturer errors.
Not bad
- Pros: Dual proc support, on board RAID (getting it going under ubuntu took some doing). Makes for a very nice KVM server, I've currently got Windows 2008, Ubuntu 8.10, and FreeBSD 7.0 all running as virtual machines running on top of Ubuntu 8.10 with KVM. There's a small problem with bridging but it's Linux related I think.
- Cons: The first one was DOA. NE was a bit hesitant to take it back (note their return policy, as it's not obvious). The board came with a scratch on the circuit board, missing items out of the box. New Egg took care of it, albiet reluctantly.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure to read the return policy for each individual item. New Egg is not as customer friendly as they used to be.
make sure your BIOS is up to date
- Pros: running win 2003 stably so far and doing what it suppose to. Not much except being relatively cheaper.
- Cons: The most bothering me issue is how completed it could get to make it work at the first.
It doesn't work right out of box, you have to flash BIOS to newest version (download from tyan website) to make it recognize even a Geforce 9500 PCI-e video card (and even after flash the BIOS, the x16 PCI-e slot still doesn't recognize the video card !)
Before you try to flash BIOS, make sure you have a windows 98 bootable disk otherwise the flash program wouldn't run correctly.
To make a driver floppy disk for the on board RAID controller is another headache. The chip set is Intel ESB2 and you have two choices to do this:
1) Boot from Tyan CD comes with the mobo and get into the floppy maker application, but it will prompt you the corresponding IMG file is not available;
2) Download the RAID driver file from tyan website from the exact product page. However, you will find out tha the file you downloaded is wrong. No ESB2 chip set would be list in the options after press F6 to load it up.
