4 out of 5 eggsReplace CMOS Battery

Pros: Stable Server Board
Low Cost
Easy to Install Win 2008

Cons: CMOS Battery usually Dead or Near Dead

Other Thoughts: You need to replace the CMOS battery with a CR 2032 battery. Replace it even if the battery appears ok. The reason some people are having CMOS resets is due to a dead or weak battery. I have had 3 dead batteries in a row with this board. I have about 10 of these motherboards in total. These batteries are only a few dollars.

4 out of 5 eggsspicy

Pros: first one was DOA, replacement going good so far.

Cons: as someone else said.. chipset heatsink is HOOOTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!! highly recommend looking into a cooling option for it. unfortunately not much is available for me as this is in a 1U chassis with a raid card over the heatsink.

Other Thoughts: 2x L5520 2.26ghz xeons
32GB (8x4GB) crucial ram
squeezed into 1U chenbro case. (cable nightmare)

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Can hold 2 1366 cpus...

Cons: Often resets bios on it's own, no good for RAID setups, has problems detecting drives sometimes, see other notes.

Other Thoughts: I have had this motherboard for a while. At first, it seemed to work fine. I had some trouble with it about 5 months after I got it. Had a raid setup and it started telling me that one of the drives had gone bad... I tested it and the drive was perfectly fine. Put it back in and it said the drive was now ok...?

I decided to replace the drive anyway and it worked... for about another 3 months then it said another drive was bad. It was wrong again. Thought maybe it was my other hardware but after much testing, I found out it is just a really cheap, lousy motherboard.

Trust me, in the case of buying a motherboard, it's worth it to spend the extra money on a better one! Avoid this one if at all possible.

5 out of 5 eggsWorkstation?

Pros: see other thoughts

Cons: see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: On the intel site they suggest duel Xeon W5580 for highend 3d graphics use and this board seems like one of the obvious choices for that processor setup.

I would like to make sure that this board would support the nVidia quadro 5800?

Is it SLI capable (aka 2 graphics cards)?

4 out of 5 eggsNice but need polish

Pros: Nice fast machine - server class - uses ECC memory - what I insist on.

Cons: Has boot priority bug - insists on booting from HD

Chipset heat sink gets too hot to touch - really! I'm buying a fan for it.

Other Thoughts: Tyan has not let me down in the past - long life hardware worth the extra bucks.

Right now they are 'upgrading' their web site with lots of annoying gadgets to help provide support - making getting support impossible...

5 out of 5 eggs100% awesome

Pros: 2x 1366 cpus, bunch of ram, the Web login to the bios is SPECTACULAR, i use this board for my esxi box @ the office this is really ideal for that. 1 com port to spit data back and forth with the ups is a nice touch.

Cons: i didn't find keys to a Ferrari in the box :-\

Other Thoughts: i thought i should again mention the Web Login + VNC to popin to the box from afar via bios, under any os or any kind of stupidity. also i half regret not getting the one up with the LSI on board but live + Learn :-\

5 out of 5 eggsGuy that says this board needs ECC RAM

Pros: cheap.

can use any type of ddr3. I tried corsair, patriot, and mushkin 6G 3 channel [desktop] kits, before settling on the geil GV36GB1333C7TC times 2.

Cons: Disclaimer: I'm using this board as a desktop board, which it's not really designed for. So what I put under cons here only pertain to use as a desktop system.

hard to fit large heatsinks on this board. I finally found the XIGMATEK Dark Knight, that mounted correctly. They do overhang the memory slots, though, and may block the 4th DIMM slot (the blue one in the pic). using that DIMM slot slows down the memory, so I wouldn't have used it anyway. and DIMMs like the patriots with tall heat spreaders, in the 3rd slot, will hit these heatsinks.

no sound. usb sound blaster took care of that easily

just a bit larger than ATX, so it blocks some of the cool cable routing holes in my antec 1200.

requires 2 8-pin 12V CPU power connectors, and it's hard to find a < 100W PS that has them... and my system w/ 2 w5580s, and a GTX260 only draws 460W off the wall, fully loaded, so 1000W is total overkill.

Other Thoughts: like I said under pros, this board does NOT require ECC memory. It runs fine with "desktop" memory.

this board does not use the 5520 chipset, so two of the x8 slots are only x4 gen 1 electrically. didn't matter to me, but if you've got heavy IO requirements it might to you...

5 out of 5 eggsGuy that says his board is DOA.

Pros: dual 1366
64gb max ram

Cons: Not free, :p

Other Thoughts: For the person that had 2 doa boards:
Please buy the right ram before you say its dead because your trying to run non ECC DESKTOP ram in a server motherboard it wont boot with that ram.

max support of 32gb ECC udimm (unbuffed) or 64gb ECC RDIMM (registered)

*I do not own this yet but after talking to tyan because the memory spec are not clear.*
