1 out of 5 eggsNot ready for prime time

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Debilitating USB boot issues; of all the various Linux flavors I tried to install, only debian actually made it to the login screen, then would freeze when attempting login. All other variants (CentOS, Arch) would simply never get past the boot loader. Transferring CPU, RAM, etc. to an alternate (ASRock) motherboard yielded a flawless system, so I can only assume the Tyan motherboard is either defective (bad) or very poorly designed (worse).

Other Thoughts: Even if everything did work, the insanely long POST sequence would have driven me nuts. Just a completely disappointing product, especially coming from a company with Tyan's pedigree.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for FreeNAS w/ Plex

Pros: Supports ECC, 6 SATA ports (max amount of HDD's my fractal node 304 could hold), no unnecessary ports like sound or HDMI. Just a barebones server motherboard. Great price.

Cons: 16G max memory, but I knew this when buying

Other Thoughts: Using as a FreeNAS/Plex server, so far no problems. Using with a core i3 processor which seems to be overkill for my use, i think my max usage was 15% when transcoding a movie for download. Only wish I had bought 16G instead of 8G of ram because I'm probably at 90% ram usage; regardless I still haven't had any playback issues when streaming to my Roku.

2 out of 5 eggsI really want to keep, but...

Pros: -boots freenas (with I3 gen 4)

Cons: -IKVM - can't disable root or change password for root account
-second system fan runs at 100%, no matter what I tried (mobo has 4-wire fan jack, and my fan is 3 wire, but 1st system fan runs at 900 rpm, send at 1500 rpm - identical fans.

Other Thoughts: This is cheapest mini-itx mobo I found that support ECC and has 6 SATA ports for my nas4free or freenas build.

So far I don't have worm and fussy filling about this mobo. While it boots freenas - inability to change password for known iKVM root account is dealbraker.

Fan at 100% is another issue - probably solvable by paralleling 2 fans. Again - this is not type of corner-cutting I would like to do for 24/7 setup.

good luck with your build

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: 6x SATA ports
ECC support
mini-ITX factor form
IPMI makes configuring so much easier

Running Freenas with a Windows 7 virtualbox VM, Plex Media Server and Transmission with no issues at all.

Cons: One minor con:

Getting a weird bug with IPMI where it stops working after a manual reboot. Powering down the system and turning it on again resolves this issue. Tried assign the IPMI it's own static IP but that doesn't seem to work. Not a huge issue since the NAS is always on.

Other Thoughts: My first Tyan motherboard. Was considering the ASRock E3C224D2I but decided to give Tyan a try since it's $60 cheaper. Glad I gave Tyan a chance. Loving the board so far!

My build:

Freenas beta
Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell
16GB Crucial ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1.5V (2x8GB)
6x Western Digital 3TB Red drives in RAID-Z2
Fractal Design Node 304
