2 out of 5 eggsComponents fall aparts so the company doesn't have to warranty it.

Pros: -Many different features.
-Huge bang for the buck.
-Appealing colors and designs.
-Looks like a competitive board.

Cons: Components will fall apart, literally, like the SATA data ports on the motherboard. Once this happens, the company will claim the part has been abused and is no longer under warranty.

Other Thoughts: Moved to ASUS a year ago.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
To unplug the SATA cable, it must press and hold the lever (metal latches) to disengage lock SATA cables to avoid damage the ports and affect the limited warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Board

Pros: AWESOME BOARD

I have had this board for 1 year and 1 month and I am very happy with it.
It is fast and reliable with many features that's worth the price. This is running an 8350 that was recognized right away and booted no problem. It has legacy support[com ps2 floppy] plus lots of sata ports and usb connectors. I have had very few issues with this board/build. Because this was my first ASRock I was uncertain but it has so many features it was worth a try. Since then I have also obtained an ASRock 880gm-le which is doing quite well too.

It has a good quality look and feel to it with a nice chip-set cooling attached and optional fan which I did not install yet.

The on-board pwr reset buttons are great. So many features you MUST read through the details to see for yourself and I have not found a feature or option that doesn't work.

This is great audio that's not a dedicated sound card.

plus various sata ide drive combinations all worked

I have had all the usb ports and six sata ports populated at one time with no trouble.

Usb 3.0 works great.

Boot time is 25 seconds, and shutdown time is 12 seconds. No ssd.

I dont know how much computer but I like all the connectivity that's another reason I chose it.

These tests were done with the system as it is used not with drivers and programs stripped. They are modest but acceptable for me.

Overclocking

I was able to get it to 4.8 stable but then stepped it back down to stock 4.0 4.2 ghz until i actually need it. I have overclocked for years but I see no need with this setup. It is quite powerfull enough where it is.

This system feels fast and zippy in windows and linux mint\ubuntu.

Cons: There is a strange thing this board does and i have not found a fix for it. When windows crashes bsd or if there is a driver crash and you reboot the computer the bios looses its focus on your boot drive ans give error no drive attached. Then you have to go to hdd boot device priority list and the hdd are either mixed up or nothing is in the list. You can reset the priority list and then you have to save exit and shut down and power off for it to actually boot properly. I f I don't do it in that order it will return no drives attached. After this method it boots fine and and fast and properly. This is my only complain but a big one. I have reinstalled Windows 2 times so it is not and insallation issue. Why should the bios get confused when a bsd happens? This is sad because if not for this it would be a perfect board.

Note: This only happens on crashes seriously hard and at that this sytem does not crash much at all. This is one of the most stable boards I have ever owned.
When using sleep state and the system wakes up 1 out of 4 times the keyboard is unresponsive and requires a reboot.

Other Thoughts: I have this board and the 880gm le fx and I am now a fan of ASRock. I am looking forward to my next purchase.

Overall

My web experience and gaming and working in office programs are all great. When I have done media encoding it works without a hitch. Like the duck guys its happy happy happy.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 6 Months

Pros: Worked for a while. Never used the bells and whistles much. All that software based go faster stuff seemed like it was just asking for problems. I wanted this machine to last for years. Played Skyrim at Highest settings 30 pps but no long periods of play.
Temperatures stayed moderate.

Cons: It was not noticeably faster than my budget mini box budget machine, which is on its 2nd or 3rd year. A machine I have tortured.
After about 6 months new high dollar Asrock machine shut off never to start again. Burnt capacitor. A machine I pampered.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked fine for several months. Temperatures were staying low, and programs ran smoothly.

Cons: Died by what the shop guy said looked like an overclock, overvoltage event, a blown capacitor. Should not have happened as I only used a few of the automatic features to try to avoid such calamities. Only saw 2 BSODs in the entire period with had no incidents any time near the failure date.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the Hastle

Pros: When it worked it worked like a champ

Cons: First board was received DOA. Second board received 2 weeks later.

Worked fine until 2 months after the extended warranty I bought expired. Was working fine when I went to bed, next morning it was dead and blue screened after every attempt to install a new OS

Other Thoughts: Asrock has been my choice for boards since the Tomahawk. I've replaced this board with a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3. I hope it's a better value.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Dave,

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the issue, please turn the power off, clear the CMOS.
Set the UEFI BIOS default.
Test with single memory module, switching another memory if its same issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for OC 8 core CPU

Pros: Easy overclocking in the BIOS. Good space around CPU socket for larger coolers, and between PCIE slots for CfX cards. Crossfires 2 cards at x16 speed. Handles 8-core CPU. Front panel USB 3.0. 8 Sata ports.

Cons: Board layout is a little odd, particularly the fan connectors. None of them are near the front, so front fans have to stretch wire over the SB chipset. CPU fan connectors are right next to cooler mounting peg, so be sure to plug the fans in before mounting the cooler. Front Panel Audio connector is at the back of the board, which is silly. NB heatsink is kind of tall, but there's enough space from the CPU socket that it shouldn't block 2 fan coolers.

Other Thoughts: I got this as an upgrade from the Extreme3. Same NB & SB chipsets, but better power stage handling for my FX-8120 chip. I couldn't overclock at all with the Extreme3, but with the Extreme4 it's only a question of how hot do I want to run it. I had the latest BIOS firmware ready when I got the board, and after flashing was able to set all the parameters as I had them on the old board. Win7 barked a little bit about the drive controller, but otherwise it went super smooth.

2 out of 5 eggsbroken after 2 years

Pros: Lots of bells and whistles.

Cons: My board was extremely slow to boot up. Which was a real let down since at the same time I bought an SSD, and combined they did nothing for my boot up speed since the board took forever (windows loaded quickly). Shortly after buying the board the first and second Sata 6 slots died. I didn't return the board since I only needed 4 slots anyway. Then I started having trouble with a couple USB slots. Again didn't need them all, not a big deal FOR ME. Now, after two years of having the board it just died. No power to keyboard and mouse and no signal to monitor. Did a CMOS reset, nothing. Removed all peripherals and did another CMOS, nothing. Took it to a local repair shop for them to run diagnostics and they thought the actual chip socket died.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Windows 8 ready motherboard

Pros: Great UEFI motherboard. Built a system around the AMD FX8350 with 32 GB memory and added a water cooler. I run Photoshop CS6 and Adobe Lightroom 5. This system was built specifically as a workstation to run Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom, and it fly's through the tasks I give it. I had the problem where the system went into single channel mode and would only see 16 GB memory. An e-mail to ASRock support quickly resolved the problem. They got back to me right away and their solution fixed the issue on the first try. It now registers 32 GB of memory. Have not had any issues with this motherboard. The memory I installed is PC3-14900 (DDR3-1866), which is the fastest memory it will take without overclocking the memory. I am not running the system overclocked, and it's very stable.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great motherboard. Because of the UEFI bios, it is Windows 8 ready. Kudos to ASRock support. Very quick to respond.

5 out of 5 eggsLogical verifier

Pros: http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme4/?cat=Specifications

Some nut said the sata III were 3 GB instead of 6 GB, because of his interpretation of "8 x SATA3" on the above website> scroll down the page and it plainly states:
SATA3 - 6 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by AMD SB950, support RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, JBOD and RAID 5), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions
- 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by Marvell SE9120, support NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions (SATA3_8 connector is shared with eSATA3 port)

Cons: I haven't got the bucks together for my new Vishera system.

Other Thoughts: This mobo is going on my wish list.

5 out of 5 eggsASGOOD as it gets

Pros: Stable reliable everything works
I have been using this board for six months and so far it is my new favorite for all the connectivity and speed. I like to use my old hdd's as backup storage and i have had no trouble with this playing well with my old ide's and sata drive. My boot drive is a seagate 2 tb st2000dm001 with win8 pro and it boots in 20 seconds which i think is fast.
the bios uefi has most of the OC features but not as much as others. I was able to get my 8350 to 4.8 Ghz but set it back down to 4-4.2 because it just wasn't necessary.
i do happen to like the blue and white colors.
sata usb and sound ports all working have not had anything not work. I will be getting another for a spare.

Cons: Only con i can think of is when i was tweaking the pc against the upper limits of its ability i had a hard crash and it lost the hdd configuration priorities and that had to be redefined in the bios. nothing else got changed and it only happened during overclocking tests.

Other Thoughts: config
