4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The HDMI in and out are nice plus the 4 PCI slots is nice, I love this mother board and the on board power switch is nice along with lights.

Cons: The corner was a bit warped but that is common in MOBO's

Other Thoughts: I really like this board I just wish it had some onboard wireless

5 out of 5 eggsASRock has a winner

Pros: Rock solid from the time it came out of the box.

Windows app allows OC tweaking directly while running an OS reducing the jumping back and forth from Windows/Prime95 or whatever back to the BIOS/UEFI.

Cons: Not really a con, but one of the Windows apps has a graphic of the mobo with a bunch of temperature readings at various points, including one for the CPU. This must be a surface reading, as your cores will be much hotter. Don't assume that reading is a core temp, like I did for a while.

Other Thoughts: My first trip away from ASUS for my own build for many years, and my research indicated this board was a good reason to try ASRock.

Had it running just over a week now, and though I'm a newbie at overclocking I was able to take the 4700K to 4.2GHz with a single BIOS click. Sure, the voltages are probably too high and could be tweaked, but I was happy with Prime95 temps of mid to high 60s with a simple click. Barely begun to explore this board, but I expect to enjoy it for many years.

Had read some reviews warning about unstable/bricked BIOSes, particularly early realease ones, and I did update mine fairly soon, but this feels like a fully mature product.

If I had run into trouble during setup, an LCD panel on the board itself would have told me (as it was a prompt during a boot that reminded me I forgot to plug in one of my video card's power connections). USB port on the board allows direct BIOS flash.

There is a display in the UEFI that shows you everything that's plugged into the board and I used that as a double check during the build.

1 out of 5 eggsintegrated graphics are MIA

Pros: nice feature set.

Cons: When I plug my monitor into the hdmi port I get no boot screen. However, my audio is telling me the OS has booted. The issue does not arise with a discrete card. This leads me to believe that the board does not work with integrated graphics--the iGPU is not even detected by the motherboard.

Also, the RAM slots should use a regular old two-sided latch, insteead of this new fangled one-sided latch business. It just made it harder to install the ram sticks. I paid a lot of money for this system, and I expect things like basic graphics detection to work out of the box.

Other Thoughts: No response from tech support, despite two separate emails. No chat support. No phone support. I want to use my system immediately, because I have the right to expect that for a very high-end system. This is costing me money.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
For the HDMI, please plug the monitor to HDMI-out, if plug to HDMI-In which will not be get display.
Visit mainboard's manual, under page 15, location 14 at link ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/Z87%20OC%20Formula.pdf
For the one-side latch memory slots, the mainboard's chosen to use to avoid conflict with larger discrete VGA cards while install/remove the memory.

5 out of 5 eggsSlick looker

Pros: Yellow on black makes a good contrast. Like a lego train set I have, works well.
Worked out of box first time with 32GB of 2400MHz memory.
With new Radeon R9 280X is awesome.

Does windows... 8.1

Cons: Should have bought some of the Radeon R290X to really populate this monster.

Does not do dishes.

5 out of 5 eggsASRock OC Formula

Pros: Very good looking board with a large number of sata 3 and usb 3 ports. you can not go wrong with this board.

Cons: I was very disappointed that the I/O shield was not padded.

Other Thoughts: It is worth it to note that hdmi in works with gpus installed kinda. it will switch between a black screen and what ever you have connected to the hdmi in port. it will not display an image from the computer itself.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than budget board, but enthusiastic yet

Pros: -features for OC people (or wannabe)
-power, reset, clear cmos, OC buttons on the board
-an OLED displaying temperature and other readings
-nice BIOS screen with helpful description and multilingual
-enough USB3.0
-enough SATA3 (six + four)
-lots of fan headers (eight in total)
-enough SATA3 cables
-board is well labeled
-3 PCIe 3.0 x16
-water proof! (but I am not going to test this feature)
-liquid cooling option (but the adapters are smaller than standard)
-cpu is powered by TWO 8pins
-onboard sound seems very good
-a hdmi pass though
-5 years warranty
-came in big box that looks deluxe

Cons: -everything including the color makes the buyer think it is comparable to those ~$400 board
-one hdmi onboard output only, no DVI, no display port (but no buyer of this board is going to use the onboard graphics)
-it looks like it has 4 yellow PCIe 3.0 x16, but the fourth is actually a PCIe 2.0
-no 3way SLI
-only 2 four pin fan header
-all SATA3 cable that it bundles with have a 90degree elbow which doesnt fit well for my case

Other Thoughts: Basically I wanted to buy a top-end 1150 cpu and bought this board without really knowing what I am getting. It seems this board has more features than those ~$150 board, but actually I may not use them. Just nice features to have. Havent ran into any issues yet. Everything seems good.

The biggest thing that misled me was the four yellow PCIe slots, but only 3 of them are PCIe x16. It doesnt really matters as these lanes always run x8 or x4 in dual or triple mode. But ASRock please dont do these disguises to make buyers think this is the same as those ~$400 boards. This is just bad business practice.

I had used Gigabyte, Asus, Intel, EVGA, MSI board before and I dont find this ASRock board to be any inferior. I just hope their customer support is good in case I need them.
