4 out of 5 eggsThis can't actually support ECC

Pros: Looks like a solid board if you don't need ECC support.

Cons: Intel's docs (e.g. q87 chipset brief) are fairly clear that Q87 doesn't support ECC functionality; the C226 chipset is needed for that. So correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like this board may be able to boot and work with ECC UDIMMs installed, but won't actually get the benefits of error detection / correction.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat server motheroboard, i7 support, and ECC

Pros: Everything on this board has been working flawlessly in linux (kernel 3.18). Fast POST and support for i7! What more can you ask for. I paired this board with a Intel Core i7-4790K.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Worked great out of the box.

Cons: Won't boot to BIOS
ASRock will not respond to tech support questions

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please check if using CPU is Haswell-R which requires BIOS version 2.30.

Otherwise, trouble shoot the mainboard whether the issue is resolved.
Unplug the ATX power, remove all components from mainboard.
Remove the mainboard from chassis, place it on mainboard’s box.
Clear the CMOS.
Check the mainboard’s CPU socket contact pins are normal (should be pointing same way and pattern).
Reseat the CPU and heatsink fan if socket pins are normal.
Test with single memory module.
Test with onboard VGA.
Plug the 24 + 8 or 4 pins ATX power.
Plug the chassis power switch to mainboard, and try again.
If you have any technical questions please contact us with detail problem description at We will assist you shortly.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsgood board

Pros: absolutely a good board - also had to talk to tech support which was fast and they knew what they were talking about
supports haswell and 32GB ram for an entry level Hyper-V server or maybe something else you might be thinking of

Cons: this is minor and just nit picking - the included io shield will NOT fit a 1 U server
I wish manufacturers would include some kind of thin, scissor trimmable io shield along with the original io shield for 1 U servers

Other Thoughts: Just a kudos for good tech support - it is rare for me to talk to a tech person (in this case email) and get a good answer. Asrock impressed me with this one.

Also, the board looks clean and well manufactured

4 out of 5 eggsSimple with no extras

Pros: This was almost exactly what I was looking for in a motherboard. No built-on sound, limited built-on video, dual gigabit NIC, and 8 SATA ports. After running for a week, everything seems solid running Windows 8. The UEFI was different to deal with, but kind of cool. My RAM is running at 1.35V with the correct timings, so in my opinion this board is very good. Wish I could utilize some more of the Q87 chipset features like remote console over Ethernet (haven't figured out how to do that yet).

Cons: The only thing I've had a problem with is understanding some of the BIOS settings. The majority are your normal BIOS settings, but some have different acronyms than I'm used to seeing and the manual doesn't really explain anything about the settings.

The ASMedia SATA ports are not RAID 0/1... I saw another motherboard with the EXACT same chip on it that supported those RAID levels so I figured this would. However, it doesn't. Those two ports are just standard AHCI. It really wasn't a big deal because I just wanted a mirrored array and software RAID 1 is nearly as good as pseudo-hardware RAID 1...

Other Thoughts: If you're using RAID 5 on an Intel RST motherboard, DO NOT install Windows 8.1. You will get frequent BSODs. I installed WIn8.1 before I got this motherboard (on an H57 chipset board) and got a BSOD about every 15 minutes when my RAID 5 was plugged in. Tried new drivers, but nothing helped... Tried installing Win8.1 on my new board and got the EXACT same behavior. Even tried wiping the drives and rebuilding the array, but that didn't help either. So it's not he board's fault... It's Microsoft's and Intel's problem. I'm back to running Win8 without issues (side note... Start8 is worth $5 to make Win8 good).

I can't figure out why they chose to put PCI on the board. Why not PCIe instead or at leas one PCIe 1x and one PCI. Oh well, I don't need the ports anyway.

Not sure why they didn't include a display port/hdmi/dvi port instead of the VGA port. The processors the motherboard supports handle those so it seems silly to do an analog signal instead of digital.
