1 out of 5 eggsNo video on inital boot up

Pros: Small

Cons: I am trying to build a freenas system using main components from newegg.com

No video on initial boot up using onboard vga. All fans running, I can see green led on motherboard blinking constantly. No problem with on/off power. Just no video. I waited over 20min.

Bios version is original. Haven't done anything to it since I can't see the video. I even tried to reset the bios by removing onboard battery for a few min then put it back.

I've tried different lcd and vga cable, no luck. The lcd and vga cable works when I connect to a working PC.

- Memory is Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Server Memory Model CT2KIT102472BD160B

- CPU is Intel Core i3-4160 Haswell
- Hardrive is Crucial 250GB SSD

I've searched the web for my issue and found none. Also posted the asrock forum and so far no answer.

I am suspecting the bios is the cause but not sure. How can I upgrade the bios without seeing the video ?

I am going to RMA to newegg.com if I don't get this resolved in the next few days.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Flawlessly

Pros: Dedicated BCM, Dual intel Gbit NIC
ECC + mITX
All features are well documented.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: All features work exactly as they are documented.

I've been using this board on a freenas server for several months with no issues at all.

The price was high for what I am using it for, but I would rather get a quality board at a high price than a cheap piece of garbage.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board

Pros: 6 SATA3 ports. Not DOA.
Running NAS4Free on a 16GB PNY USB on Board.
CORSAIR CXM series CX600M 600W ATX12V v2.3
E3C226D2I =MOBO
Crucial 16GB DDR3 1600 Model CT2KIT102472BD160B
Intel Core i3-4130T Haswell Dual-Core 2.9GHz....only 35 watts
3 Seagate 3TB drives in RAIDZ1....will upgrade when the cash right.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: When the board first boots your screen may not come on right away.....don't panic. After my 3pin fans slowed down the screen came on...This maybe slow for some...

4 out of 5 eggsA great board for a NAS home server

Pros: 1. Slim form factor
2. IPMI/Megarac access is a joy to use
3. ECC RAM support
4. Server grade features (6 SATA ports, 2 LAN ports, etc)

I like that uses only Intel brand chip(sets) throughout, makes building a FreeNAS build a breeze from compatibility standpoint

Cons: The 1st board was DOA, had to RMA back to Newegg.
The dead board came from Newegg Canada, the good replacement was shipped from US. A bad batch perhaps?

Other Thoughts: A great server board for those small NAS appliances at home or for small businesses.

5 out of 5 eggsgood NAS mobo

Pros: -reliable
-fully supported by freenas
-worked out of the box

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Got it for freenas, together with
-KVR16LE11/8KF 1 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L ECC CL11 DIMM 1.35V w/TS Server Kingston F

Memory selection is CRITICAL - you can't go wrong if you go with official compatibility list. Anything else and you are risking shipping charges.

Works stable, onboard remote access works fine - browser selection is critical here.

No complains, works stable, high uptime. running it with 4 WD REDs in RAIDZ1.

Mobo controls 2 PWM fans nicely.

Definitely reccomend, wish it was cheaper.

5 out of 5 eggsFreeNAS Mini

Pros: First time FreeNAS build. Excellent out of the box server grade mobo for its size. 6x6Gbs ports, dual Intel NICS + IPMI. This is awesome to smash so many options on the board.

Works superbly well with FreeNAS 9.2.xx.

CPU = Intel Pentium G3258 Haswell Dual-Core 3.2GHz
MOBO = ASRock E3C226D2I Mini ITX
RAM = Crucial 16GB (2x8GB) ECC UnBuffered DDR3 1600
OS HDD = 16GB USB (Fastest possible USB2.0)
RAID HDDS = WD Red 3TB x 4
PSU = CORSAIR CX600 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE

Cons: Hate the position of the 12v as it goes on the opposite end. But I guess, size for sacrifice of location for the line tracing requirements.

Medicore CPU control options in BIOS/UEFI.

Other Thoughts: Been on Asus/Gigabyte for awhile and tested the waters with Asrock. Considering Asrock originated from Asus, no issue to be afraid of the brand name considering the market dominance.

Their 8port SAS mini-ITX-E board looks tempting to try next in another lifetime.

3 out of 5 eggsChallenging build

Pros: It is a server motherboard with the Intel C226 chipset (server chipset) on the mini-ITX form factor. If one wants to build a server in a small computer case, this would be the motherboard to use. I don't think there is another motherboard like this on the market.

6 X Sata3 ports
2 X NICs
Lots of USB3 and USB2 ports

Cons: This motherboard has challenged me. I could not get the power button switch to work. I connected it to the proper pins and it would shut the motherboard on and off. After fifteen minutes, it stopped responding. It did nothing. I wasted a lot of time troubleshooting the issue. At first, I thought it was a defective switch on the case. I replaced the switch and the issue persisted. Now the motherboard is headed back to NewEgg via RMA. I hope the replacement board does not challenge me as much.

The next issue pertains to the CPU. What one does not know until they buy the motherboard is that i5/i7 CPUs are supported but if you install either or them, then the motherboard will be out of warranty. There is a footnote in the manual that accompanies the motherboard describing the out of warranty status for i5/i7 CPUs. The NewEgg website and the ASRock website both fail to mention this ASRock policy. It is probably best to go with either a Xeon E3-1220 or an i3. Those are the recommended CPUs per the manual.

It would be nice if NewEgg and ASRock both were more up front about this issue.

Other Thoughts: I advise anyone considering this motherboard for a "small" server build to be careful about the CPU selection.

1 out of 5 eggsHave two of these, one dead!

Pros: First one MOBO works well out of the box no issues for >10 months. Using it with FreeNAS 9.2 and 8x3 tb

Cons: Second board purchased in JULY 2014, does not work. Boots up and gives me 4 short beeps. Can't find the answer to it. Searched all over and posted on ASROCK forum. No answer so far. Can't get video or USB ports do not work. Found a lot of negative reports on the ASROCK forum regarding bad hardware. Plan is to have 3 server with same configuration but now that this second board is faulty, there seems to be a batch out there...I think I will buy a third MOBO from some one else...

Other Thoughts: ASROCK, contact me so I can send this back for RMA. I need a new working board.

I will update this review on the final outcome. Stay tuned.

3 out of 5 eggsworks with FreeNas

Pros: IPMI (see cons), 6 Sata 3 ports, onboard USB for bootable USB stick, 2 network ports

Cons: 1) IPMI remote console has problems with non-IE browser (tried Chrome and Firefox on windows 7), works randomly on and off with latest JRE.
No issues with IE 11/latest JRE, worked fine. One egg off.

2) There are 2 4-pin fan ports, "front" and "rear", both (supposedly) temp-controlled. Apparently only "front" adjusts RPMs based on temp, second one (using 2 identical fans) runs at 100%. I ordered splitter, but expect it to work out of the box on $200+ MB. Bios tweaking didn't help, including manual fan speed adjustments.

Other Thoughts: I tried ~$150 Tyan first, but sent it back, too many issues. This one, while too expensive for my test, is the only one available today (August 2014) supporting 6 Sata ports and ECC memory (a must, in my opinion, for ZFS) for 1150.

Used it with KVR16LR11S4/8KF and I3-4130T. FreeNas works fine, at least during initial setup and light usage.

Overall, if I do it again, would probably tried 4-core SOC supermicro mini-ITX board - similar price with cpu already included.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

For the issue IPMI with non-IE browser, there is no report that IPMI only works selectively on a certain browser.
In ASRock, we use different browsers with IPMI on daily basis, the IPMI connectivity is solid. Are you using dedicated IPMI LAN port or failover?

For cooling fan speed control, please make sure you are using BMC firmware update 00.14.00 http://66.226.78.21/downloadsite/bios/Server/E3C226D2I(00.14.00)BMC.zip .

If you have any technical inquiry, please contact us with detail problem description at william@asrockamerica.com. We will assist you shortly.

2 out of 5 eggsConsole Redirection Does Not Work

Pros: Board runs Windows Server 2012 without a problem

Cons: Console redirection in remote management does not work.

Other Thoughts: Board is running Windows 2012 Server without any issues. The problem is with the BMC/IPMI system. Everything seems to be working in the IPMI system other than Console Redirection. I believe this is related to the Java Jviewer applet that is downloaded from the server BMC.

Java Version is 7, update 65. Java Runtime will not allow the Jviewer applet to be loaded and run. I have tried to use remote console in Windows Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. None of the browsers will load the Jviewer applet.

I have set the Java security level in the control panel to medium (as low as it will go). I have deleted temporary files in the Java control panel. I have added the IP address of the BMC to the Java exception list in the Java control panel. Nothing I have done has allowed Jviewer to load and run.

I get the following error messages when Jviewer trys to load:

Missing Application-Name manifest attribute
Missing Permissions manifest attribute in main jar

The Remote Control window on the Dashboard screen is all black with 0 x 0 displayed.

I have sent a support request to ASRock and hope to hear back from them soon.

If you are looking for a server motherboard with remote management I would say look for other options. This board is not ready for prime time.
