5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product, Great Tech Support from AsrockRack

Pros: Mini ITX form factor is great for personal home server.
Type A USB port on MB is convenient for FreeNas OS install on a USB Flash Drive inside the case.
6x SATA 6GB/s ports
ECC support for FreeNas
Impeccable Tech Support from AsrockRack
Great RMA process with Newegg, as always...

Cons: Max 16GB RAM, would love option for more RAM capacity if I want to add more in the future, currently maxed out. It is a server MB afterall.
Max 1600 DDR3 Ram, would love faster RAM options.
First MB did not work, had to RMA to Newegg for replacement.

Other Thoughts: Tech support from William at AsrockRack is excellent. He is responsive to support questions and follows up with e-mails within a day or two at most. My first MB did not power on, had to RMA to Newegg. William followed up with me when Asrock received the RMA board from Newegg to verify that the board was indeed unable to power up on their end. Also explained that they were checking more boards in their California warehouse to make sure no more go out with the same issue my board had. He didn't have to update me on a product that I returned and was no longer my problem, but he did anyway. Now that is customer service!!

3 out of 5 eggsWill CPU burnout? Voltage at 1.7

Pros: 6 SATA ports, IPMI, ITX form factor, ECC, dual NIC

Cons: CPU: Intel Pentium G3220 - Supported in all BIOS versions.
BIOS: 3.30
RAM: 8GBx2 ECC - CT2KIT102472BD160B

I noticed the CPU voltage was running at 1.7 instead of 1.5. So I went into the BIOS only to see there is NOT an option to set the CPU voltage.

Haven't had any other issues yet but I will not be happy about replacing a CPU because the motherboard can't manage setting the voltage. At $200 for a "server class" motherboard this is frustrating.

Other Thoughts: Will ASROCK replace my CPU after it burns out? yeah right...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for purchase and review.
The Operational VID Range is between 1.65v minimum to 1.86v maximum. But it typically runs at 1.75v. Intel Order No.: 328897-010.

2 out of 5 eggsDead after 1 month

Pros: 6 SATA ports,Xeon compatible,ECC ram,mini ITX.

Cons: Died after a Month.
It had the same problem another poster reported the Heartbeat LEDS came on but the fans wouldn't spin and it would not boot or show the screen. I tried pulling the Battery for the BIOS but that didn't help either.
I am now waiting for a RMA hopefully I will get my server back up quick since it runs my small business.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear leeann,

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
We received the board in our RMA, tested it, and the board powered up right out of the box.
The board has also been completely benchmark tested.
We recommend you to try different PSU first before installing into the case.

If you have any technical inquiry, please contact us with detail problem description at william@asrockamerica.com. We will assist you shortly.

Thank you

3 out of 5 eggspray that you don't have to deal with Asrock Support

Pros: 6 SATA ports, IPMI, ITX form factor, ECC, dual NIC

Cons: incompetent support from Asrock.
issue with CMOS/BIOS preventing it from powering on.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this board for use in a server. For this ITX form factor, it is very feature rich with 6 SATA ports making it great for a storage platform.

I was quite satisfied with the board/system for 3 months until I found that I could no longer power it on. Being a server, it is on all of the time so it is rare that I ever have to turn it off. (And in retrospect I don't think I ever unplugged or turned it off once I built it). But I had to unplug it from the wall during a recent move. After which, I could no longer power it on (nothing happened when I hit the power switch: no fans, etc) although I could see that power was being delivered by the glowing LEDS on the motherboard itself. Looking online, I found some other similar situations. Thus, I can understand why there are some complaints of DOA boards or systems being unable to book. After troubleshooting, I found that whenever the machine became unplugged from the wall, I could not power on the system until I performed a CMOS reset by taking out the battery; a more than minor inconvenience.

I contacted Asrock support which was helpful in getting an RMA underway. However, Asrock support refused to offer an advanced replacement of the motherboard despite my offer of leaving a credit card hold. They would cross-ship via the same delivery method that was used to send the product back. I sent mine back via 2-day shipping at greater costs and a replacement was sent to me via the same method. However, the replacement that was delivered was not the same motherboard (E3C224D2I was shipped to me). I immediately contacted and alerted them to the error. I was assured a proper replacement would be sent via overnight delivery as I had requested given the error. Instead, my motherboard is arriving via ground delivery (hopefully it's the right one with no errors). All the while incurring me additional costs and time wasted/spent dealing with this issue, not to mention, my server will be offline for over a week.

So if you get a good, working motherboard, you're in luck. Otherwise, good luck dealing with their support service. Or consider an alternative product altogether.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Ha N,

A correctional action will be taken in your favor and to make up the error in our process mistakes. We will do our best to regain your trust in our service .

Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that may have caused you because of our process mistakes.

5 out of 5 eggsProbably overkill for my needs... But...

Pros: Fantastic board. Great BIOS. Easy to install. Great instructions. Easy access to I/O ports.

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: First let me start by saying this is my very first computer build. I wanted to build a NAS from scratch and did not want to go the route of QNAP or Synology. I wanted my own stuff inside a case of my choosing. So I decided to go way above and beyond for my board. Paired this with a Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell 3.1GHz processor and the thing rocks. I chose board because the reviews were good and it would serve my basic needs: Serving huge HD files to my HTPC's and transcoding these files to stream anywhere over the web. It does this exceptionally well without breaking a sweat. No A/V ports, but not needed for me since I use it as a NAS. Haven't played around with the IPMI port yet, but cool feature. I know I could have gotten away with a much cheaper board that would do the exact same thing, but I went with top of the line for my first NAS build. Works great with FreeNAS OS and fits nicely in my case.

1 out of 5 eggsDont Buy

Pros: Couldn't say since it never booted

Cons: The board when I first ordered it was DOA and it took multiple emails back and forth with a guy named William to finally get a return RMA (which I had to pay the shipping for). I was then charged a $50 fee because one of the plastic clips on the memory was loose before I could get a replacement.
Weeks later I received a picture of a BIOS screen of the board I was supposedly getting. When the board arrived weeks later it also was DOA and multiple emails back and forth again with William led to him finally not replying. At which point I bought a super micro put it in the same box, with processor and ECC memory and powered right on.
Save your time and money with this board and just get a supermicro.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Erik,

Thank you for your purchase and review.
Mainboard that returned to us did not only has broken (not loose) DIMM slot latch but also “many” damaged pins in the mainboard’s CPU socket.
The damaged pins in CPU socket is considered as physical damage; it may affect or could even have voided the limited warranty.

However, we did you a favor to accept the warranty RMA service with $50 damage fee and we “paid” for the shipping back to you.
Moreover, the replacement mainboard had been fully tested with all DIMM slots populated, and screen shots of POST were provided to you before being shipped out.
This is an extra service done in your favor to ensure the board’s functionality. It’s very normal to blame the motherboard at first whenever people encounter problem, but in your case, perhaps you may want to probe into the compatibility of your RAM.

As always, we appreciate your purchase. But rather only an honest and constructive reviews are welcome.
If you have any technical inquiry, please contact me at william@asrockamerica.com

4 out of 5 eggsGot new board and it's working now

Pros: - Small form which is what I like the most and paid more to get this board.
- Remote admin
- ECC ram
- 6 SATA III ports
- 6 good SATA cables

Cons: - Expensive board and only go up 16GB ram. 32GB would have been nice.
- Only 2 case fans (front and rear) plugs. My case has 3 fans. I want the BIOS to monitor all 3 case fans since the motherboard has SMART FAN sensors.
- No HDMI

Other Thoughts: Update to my previous review.

The board I RMAed to newegg did not come up initially. No video and the remote admin page said the board down.

Sent email to Asrock support and so far they still haven't replied to me.

It cost me 15$ to RMA the memory and motherboard back to newegg. I got the replacement a week later and everything is working fine so far. Updated the BIOS without any problem. Let's wait and see...

1 out of 5 eggsNo video on inital boot up

Pros: Small

Cons: I am trying to build a freenas system using main components from newegg.com

No video on initial boot up using onboard vga. All fans running, I can see green led on motherboard blinking constantly. No problem with on/off power. Just no video. I waited over 20min.

Bios version is original. Haven't done anything to it since I can't see the video. I even tried to reset the bios by removing onboard battery for a few min then put it back.

I've tried different lcd and vga cable, no luck. The lcd and vga cable works when I connect to a working PC.

- Memory is Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Server Memory Model CT2KIT102472BD160B

- CPU is Intel Core i3-4160 Haswell
- Hardrive is Crucial 250GB SSD

I've searched the web for my issue and found none. Also posted the asrock forum and so far no answer.

I am suspecting the bios is the cause but not sure. How can I upgrade the bios without seeing the video ?

I am going to RMA to newegg.com if I don't get this resolved in the next few days.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Intel i3-4160 is a Haswell-R CPU. To support Haswell-R series, BIOS version is required P2.00 or newer.
Please check BIOS version on mainboard’s BIOS label.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Flawlessly

Pros: Dedicated BCM, Dual intel Gbit NIC
ECC + mITX
All features are well documented.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: All features work exactly as they are documented.

I've been using this board on a freenas server for several months with no issues at all.

The price was high for what I am using it for, but I would rather get a quality board at a high price than a cheap piece of garbage.
