Rock solid board
- Pros: Very stable board. My company currently has 22 of these boards in 24/7 operation as entry level servers. These boards run happily in hot, dusty environments. In the past 2 years of operation, only one board has failed, and that was due to a lightning hit.
- Cons: The passive northbridge heatsink gets quite warm, though that doesn't seem to affect stability. It does not support newer Intel CPUs or memory faster than DDR2 667.
- Other Thoughts: I have become a big fan of SuperMicro products.
My second SuperMicro build
- Pros: Stable, very stable. I've been crunching numbers for climateprediction.net for a little over a year now in addition to playing games and doing CAD work. It runs in a brutally dusty, unairconditioned space under my desk and has run non-stop for the entire time I have owned it. The only time it gets shut off is when I take it out to the garage to dust it with the air compressor, or when I won't be home and the temperature outside and subsequently inside the house are above 90 degrees F, which has been maybe three times in the year or so I have owned it.
It also has to deal with the heat generated by my Macintosh 'Mirrored Drive Doors' (Dual 1.25GHz G4) in that confined space.
- Cons: Wasn't quite the slamdunk OSX86 compatibility I was looking for when I chose the components, but it did run OS X quite snappily albeit without sound and other amenities.
It currently runs Windows XP Pro 32-bit very well. Haven't tried 64-bit versions of Windows yet.
- Other Thoughts: The system's current specs for reference:
SuperMicro PDSLA w/ Pentium D 3.4GHz 2x1GB Crucial Standard RAM Asus GeForce 7300GS 512MB VRAM 250GB Seagate SATA 3.0Gb Lite-On DVDRW SH-16A7S SATA Lite-On SHC-52S7K SATA
My other Supermicro is an old P6DBE dual PIII 700 system that is still operational, but doesn't get much use anymore.
DOA
- Pros: Nice layout. Easy set up.
- Cons: DOA. Never worked.
- Other Thoughts: I RMA'd this board. I'll get another one just to make sure. I swapped out everything except the board and it still wouldn't work.
