5 out of 5 eggsWork horse

Pros: These have been running rock solid in our servers for a few years now. Very dependable.

Cons: Purchasing this one because the one I ordered a few weeks ago randomly ignores memory on boot then suddenly recognizes all of it without touching anything on next reboot.

Other Thoughts: The onboard MegaRaid controller is not as full featured as an add on card. You have to purchase an additional chip to allow for Raid 5 and some advanced software features. Support from LSI will not help you and direct you to Supermicro support.

3 out of 5 eggsWas 5 eggs yesterday, now it is 3

Coming Soon!

Pros: Two days ago I would have given this board 5 eggs. I have loved this server from day 1. It was a wonderful board at first. This board has been perfect since I received it right after Valentines Day, 2011. It has worked perfectly until now. I had one XEON 5650 CPU (six core, 12 thread, 12MB L3 2.66 nominal clock which pushes itself to 3.06 GHz with Turbo Boost enabled and the Power Option in Control Panel set to high performance) with 12 GB DDR3 1333 ECC Registered Server Memory. I liked it so much that I ordered another 36GB of identical memory. I populated all six slots (for CPU 1) with 4 GB sticks, for a total of 24 GB. I figured I might as well wait until I purchased the second 5650 before I installed the rest of the ram. So yesterday, 10/06/2011, I received the second processor, which I had ordered the day before, so NewEgg got it here real fast (It did ship from the same state). After receiving the second identical processor, I installed it along with the other 24 GB of memory.

Cons: So there I have it A SUPERMICRO X8DT6 Motherboard in a SUPERMICRO CSE-743TQ-865B-SQ Black Pedestal Server Case, with 8 port backplane with 48 GB of ECC Registered server RAM, two 5650 processors, three 300 GB 15K.7 Cheetah 15,000 RPM SAS hard drives in Raid 5 with another drive to use as a hot spare. Even though it came with on-board SAS controller, I opted to buy the LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB on-board memory RAID Controller Card for the extra speed, and extra speed it had (sustained read speeds of 350 MB/s, Burst speeds in the upper 800s.

Everything worked fine , that is until I installed the second processor and the memory. Now it won't post, but all the fans work, the hard drives spin up, but the monitor light stays orange instead of turning blue, and the red temperature light was blinking on the front of the enclosure. Now I don't know what to do. I have reseated the ram and so on. I do not know what to do next. Any suggestions would be great.

Other Thoughts: I have found through research on this site as well as others that dual socket SUPERMICRO motherboards have a nasty habit: they work fine with ONE processor, but a fair number of them, mine included, no longer function after adding a second processor. That is the reason that I have spent over $5,000 on this machine: is so it will be a good web server, and go real fast. After careful consideration, I downloaded and flashed the BIOS with what is supposed to be the latest: X8DT60.914. I was so happy that I thought I had found the answer. I had to remove the new processor to flash the BIOS, but when I reinstalled the processor again, you guessed it: dead again. Is there a newer BIOS that I don't know about? When I checked the created attribute, it was Tuesday, September 14, 2010. That is strange I thought, seeing as how it was prior to when I purchased the board. When you spend this type of money on a machine, you expect it to work. Now I am going to have to take the CPU back out again.
