5 out of 5 eggsGreat server mobo

Pros: I've assembled a number of servers using this motherboard. All run CentOS and have LSI MegaRAID SAS 9260 controller cards. The LGA 1155 Xeon chip has to be one of the easiest to install. As of 7/25/2013 ships with version 2 bios so the Ivy Bridge chips will work right out of the box. Just a solid performer. One server has been in production for over two years and runs flawlessly.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I use the Kingston ValueRAM part number KVR1333D3E9S/4G and even though it's not on the approved list it works great.

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic board

Pros: Great board and easy to accommodate the peripheral with it.

Cons: Documentation could use a little help with regards to layout and compliance information.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: IPMI, ECC ram support, expansion slots. No construction quality problems. Does support ivy bridge cpus out of the box.

Cons: expensive compared to desktop boards, no dvi (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: The ipmi on the board defaults to being on with dhcp config, so you don't actually need to attach a keyboard/monitor to set it up. PCI slots on any board can only be 3.3v or 5v, it's the cards that can be universal. Takes unbuffered ecc ram.

3 out of 5 eggsStable but many hassles.

Pros: Stable operation, Onboard management with remote console and CD redirection.

Cons: Only two rear USB ports, and all the ports seem to have problems supplying enough current to reliably run a DVD or hard disk drive for booting.

BIOS update was required to work with my Ivy Bridge Xeon, and there was no update mechanism in the BIOS - I had to put together a boot disk on a thumb drive and run the updater from a DOS prompt. Not acceptable in a 2012 product.

Other Thoughts: No onboard sound - not surprising for a server board.

3 out of 5 eggsBe Careful

Pros: Decent price, company has a good reputation

Cons: To support a V2 (Ivy Bridge) CPU, requires a V1 CPU to do the bios upgrade. Saying that this board supports Ivy Bridge is VERY misleading.

Other Thoughts: I'm in a position of begging Supermicro to trade me for a Bios 2.0 board, buying a non-V2 CPU just to upgrade teh bios, or getting another board. IOW - no good options.

4 out of 5 eggsHas worked out well

Pros: I essentially bought this model because the X9 series are one of the only ones I've found that support SR-IOV in the BIOS. I need this for software development for a large project & without this feature, a MB is useless in my case. The board has worked great so far with various PCI & PCIe cards plugged in. SR-IOV functions are working well also.

Cons: My only complaint is the lack of drivers in Linux for the onboard Matrox G200eW VGA. I'm using Fedora 14, 15, & 16 & they all default to a standard VGA driver so I can't use higher resolutions. I haven't been able to find the correct driver for Linux. It's been a while since I've booted it to Windows, but I think that did support the VGA.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Motherboard

Pros: Good price. Good construction.

Cons: I use SuperMicro's CSE-836TQ-R800 case. That motherboard only supports 5 fans but the case has five fans plus the CPU fan so need to work around that fan connector issue (used extension off 4 pin disk connector but then it can't monitor the fan speed for failure).

4 out of 5 eggs3.3V ONLY PCI

Pros: All the features you expect. Economical when paired with E3-1230 and Kingston KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G.

Cons: First 3.3V ONLY PCI slots I have ever seen (PCI 3.0 I think circa 2002). Competition appears to support 5V. Odd choice by SuperMicro - if I need 3 PCI slots on a cutting edge board I need support for antique hardware. Not in the documentation, the only clue is the slot key in the photo. If you are going to limit to 3.3V give me PCI-X for more options. Depending on your situation this could be worth more than one star. $9 and I replaced the offending card - slightly confused but not upset.

Other Thoughts: I have never had a problem with a SuperMicro board. Two are over 12 years old and still running 24/7 without a hickup.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA. Horrible quality.

Pros: Features needed for a server.

Cons: I never write a review here. But I bought 2 server motherboards from Supermicro. The first (a different model) has a defective CPU pin. This second motherboard does not boot at all. I have installed tons of servers, and always have gone with Tyan or Asus. But I like Supermicro server case, so I thought I give their products a try. Horrible build and quality. Service superbad, and you have to return the motherboard before they send you a new one.

Other Thoughts: Supermicro quality control is definitely an issue. Personally, I would never buy a Supermicro motherboard again.
