5 out of 5 eggsNot for FreeNAS 9

Pros: low power, fanless, dual gigabit

Cons: Does not work with FreeNAS 9 because of the USB 3.0 issues

Other Thoughts: Wish I did my homework better. Fortunately I am repurposing the board for a pfSense router!

5 out of 5 eggsWon't work without ECC memory

Pros: Low power with decent memory capacity and virtualization.

Cons: Watch out for OSes that won't install due to EFI or USB3-only hardware.

Other Thoughts: Note that this motherboard absolutely needs ECC memory. That is to say : it will not work, at all (no video, no post, no beeps) if you fit a non-ECC module. Note further that at the time of writing Newegg does not sell ECC SO-DIMM memory. I used this part, which is available from other resellers : KVR13LSE9/8

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: fast motherboard with low energy consumption.

Cons: no usb 2.0

Other Thoughts: This is a nice server motherboard.
Since It only has USB 3.0, it was tricky to get the version of linux I'm using installed. Make sure your OS supports usb 3.0 before getting this one.

4 out of 5 eggsNeat but requires an ECC-SO-dimm

Pros: This looks like a really cool board on paper. It should be great for a home NAS setup. It has a lot of features that target the low-power server sector and I really like that.

Cons: Sadly, I have not gotten it to work yet. I didn't realize that this requires ECC memory. Unfortunately, finding ECC memory in the SO-DIMM form factor is difficult. I'll try again when my ECC memory arrives.
