5 out of 5 eggsserver features at nice price

Pros: I got this board to build my first NAS server, and I've been really happy with it. It seems to have a lot of cool features that a typical mobo wouldn't, specifically remote administration. It supports ECC memory and has the high-quality network interfaces that you need for a good FreeNAS build. It even has a USB port right on it, where you can put your boot device.

It comes with good documentation too, and a handy map showing you what all the plugs on the board are.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: Everyone's complaining about the ram, so here's what I used: Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B. Works fine. It's been running 24/7 for a year now with no problems.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board

Pros: Great Base Server Board. I don't know what all the ram questions are since we have 6 of these in the field with different ram configurations, with now build problems at all.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Home FreeNAS Mobo

Pros: ECC support, IPMI, dual Intel NICs.

The IPMI meant that I never needed to hook a monitor or keyboard to the machine - not even to do the initial install. It has been running FreeNAS in my garage for 6 months now with no problems. Very happy with this purchase. Would recommend it to anyone for use as a home FreeNAS server.

Cons: Getting the Java-based IPMI KVM console to work can be a pain (particularly in Linux) and I never did manage to get it to mount a remote disk image. Not that big a deal though since the machine is headless anyway. I haven't had a reason to access the console since I finished the initial installation.

Other Thoughts: Loaded this up with an Intel Xeon E3-1230V3 Haswell 3.3GHz processor (sold as a combo deal with the mobo) and 32GB of Kingston Model KVR16E11K4/32 RAM. Since I planned to use this as a FreeNAS server the ECC support was crucial. The integrated Intel NICs also offer great performance as compared to Realtek NICs that you might find in some other boards.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Server Mobo

Pros: Solid board, worked without significant tweaks/updates right out of the box. It sounds like lots of folks are having difficulty with memory pairing. I used Crucial Unbufferred ECC (detailed below) and it's working without issue.

Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Server Memory Model CT2KIT102472BD160B

Cons: I've had some NIC port flapping and can't pin down if it's related to the hardware or a FreeNAS bug. It isn't significant and doesn't seem to affect performance but my security logs are calling it out a few times a week which is a little suspect. I've swapped cables but no joy.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Motherboard for FreeNAS

Pros: To those looking for memory that works on this motherboard, I used Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B and have had no issues. IPMI works flawlessly and dual NICs are great for teaming.

Cons: Using IPMI to upgrade BIOS costs money. You can upgrade the BIOS without using IPMI though.

Other Thoughts: USB port on motherboard is extremely convenient for use with FreeNAS since it boots using a USB drive and requires no hard drive. I am using this board with a Xeon E3-1230V3 to power a 20-drive FreeNAS system in a Norco RPC-4220 case. IPMI eliminates the need for a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with i3-4150

Pros: No pros, board simply doesn't work.

Cons: Ordered this board to be paired with an i3-4150. No beeps, just dead. Took out all memory, still no beeps, just dead. (Manual says should beep with no memory. NOPE!)

Other Thoughts: Avoid, doesn't work with CPUs that claim will work.

1 out of 5 eggsRAM!

Pros: It won't run so I don't know if there are any.

Cons: RAM!!! Try to find something that'll work. The spec. stated "DDR3 1600". I ordered item N82E16820239826 (Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600). The beep code signals that the memory is empty. One user found some RAM that works (item N82E16820239402)... but costs $417 AND is out of stock!

3 out of 5 eggsMemory is a concern

Pros: For virtualization on a budget, hard to beat

Cons: I did a lot of research to find the right memory and I still get
memory bbep coeds on boot. I have not seen any ill effects but I do not like to hear 6 or 7 beeps on boot

Other Thoughts: for what I'm doing, hyper-v, this MB with 32GB and 2 TB or storage, I'd buy it again for the money.

5 out of 5 eggsGood so far

Pros: Has everything for a new zfs NAS build. The ipmi/kvm/virtual media function is fantastic. Paired with an E3-1220V3 cpu and LSI 9211-8i hba.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: People have mentioned memory on these X10 series boards can be tough to find or has function issues. I opted to try a Kingston 32gb set: KVR16E11K4/32I even though it isn't on the certified list. It has worked perfectly so far.

1 out of 5 eggsGood luck finding memory

Pros: Didn't post

Cons: Good luck getting memory for this motherboard. I just called SuperMicro support to identify a beep code pattern and was told they only approve 2 skus of compatible memory...
