4 out of 5 eggsGood Board - Terrible documentation

Pros: Good solid board - easy install after you figure out what is where (see below) - especially if you have a supermicro case. If you want a board that is solid that does without all the fancy add-ons from other vendors this is a good pick.

Cons: Horrible documentation. Be prepared to do alot of investigation but once you're done you'll be happy.

Other Thoughts: would buy again

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Motherboard

Pros: Running extended and advanced tests on the motherboard and components in it have yielded no problems. Very solid and easy to work with. Great layout. Was not alarmed with any flimsy items. Simple and not flashy.

Love the old style BIOS. This has (U)EFI support, but it doesn't have the flashy interface that everyone else has now. That, for me, was a large selling point.

Upgraded from a Core 2 Quad to an i7 4770k and all the new goodies. Goodness, is it fast.

Cons: The CPU socket is a little close to the DIMM slots for me. My P5Q Pro had a good bit of distance from the socket to the DIMM slots.

I use a closed-loop-cooler and plan on upping to a custom water loop one day. So this doesn't really affect me overall.

Other Thoughts: First ever Supermicro motherboard. I'm trying to move away from the main manufacturers (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc...) and into the server/workstation (Tyan, Supermicro, formerly Intel) world because I feel better there. Less flashy gimmicks and more robustness.

Too bad the workstation motherboard sector is small. I would classify this as a workstation motherboard more than a server motherboard.

3 out of 5 eggsHow do I hate thee, ASMedia?

Pros: Solid, fast, easy to work with, good layout. All components except the ASMedia SATA controller seem very good.

Cons: Failure-prone ASMedia SATA controller.

Other Thoughts: As I'm writing this I'm on the phone to make a second replacement of this board.

The one I originally bought, and its first replacement, both suffered from faulty ASMedia SATA ports; the former worked for a couple of days before failing, and the latter didn't work on arrival.

The Intel SATA ports work beautifully, as does every other aspect of the board, and according to Newegg I'm the only person to suffer this particular problem, although this board hasn't sold a ton of units.

I'll leave a follow-up review when the replacement arrives, detailing whether or not it has the same issue.

5 out of 5 eggsFABULOUS Motherboard

Pros: Socket 1150 Intel Z87 chipset. 8 x SATA III 6.0GB ports, dual PCIe 3.0 X16 slots, 2 x PCIe 2.0 x1 slots and 2 standard PCI. Supports overclocking, standard ATX form factor. Supports 1.35v DDR3 1600 RAM.

Cons: 2 of the fan headers are on the rear of the motherboard near I/O port module on the board. This can make fan connection difficult if you have a deep server chassis such as an EATX pedestal chassis.

I haven't had luck yet getting the system to boot with a RAID controller in either of the x16 slots. I'm not sure yet if this is a BIOS setting that needs tweaking or what exactly. I'm using a Haswell 4770k chip and the on-chip 4600 graphics.

Other Thoughts: I paired this board with Crucial low profile DDR3 1600 1.35v RAM and the Superchassis CSE-743T-665B. That model has the 4 x 5k fans in the midplane. The chassis has 8 hot swap SATA bays, which pairs nicely with the onboard SATA ports.

I had to get a pair of 4-pin fan extension cables to reach the 2 rear fan header connectors on the motherboard. No biggie.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Motherboard

Pros: We’ve been using Supermicro servers at the office for the past few years and found them to be dependable, reliable and cost effective. I just saw the Supermicro C7Z87 motherboard with triple display capability and definitely wanted it.

My initial thoughts: I just recieved this motherboard a few days ago and have been playing with it for a couple of days. It looks like a well-built motherboard. It also has several on-board video display support (VGA, HDMI, DVI and DP), but I am a hard core video nut so I am opting to get dual nVidia cards (not sure which ones yet) and bridge them via SLi. Overall, a good solid board as it is built with server grade components, and should be reliable, as server manufacturer Supermicro is known for.

Also, this motherboard can be overclocked! I overclocked this motherboard and it purred smooth like a kitten. I’ve been running it on and off for a few days so far with no crashes :)

Cons: Plain packaging without a fancy heat sink. Claims to have a UEFI BIOS but no GUI interface, which is ok with me since I am not a big fan for graphic BIOS settings anyway.

Other Thoughts: So far, so good. I will add a report of any problems later (if any).
