Think twice
- Pros: Single slot decent cooling and bundle is nice black box light 3dmark hd cable and great cust service from newegg but..
- Cons: Did not include the gift certificate that it says it contians in the box Saphire states newegg will send it out 30 days after ordering the product which is past the amount of time for refund. Then I tried double checking this with newegg who stated that there is no such promotion on this card or any listed on neweggs website. So for some reason my box did not have all of the bundle that it stated it did. Overhyped card think of a station wagon with 3 or 4 spinning rimsm depending upon if you actually got the complete bundle or not. In about a week I will post my full set up including the benchmarks of this vs a zotac 8800gt
- Other Thoughts: Sent card back to Newegg thought about paying 150$ more for the 3870 x2. But could not afford so decided to get 229$ 8800 gt since my girlfriend stated she did not want me to spend anymore on her computer i got the gt instead which is cheaper now it doesn't come with a bundle but benchmarks for it do hold better then the 3870 atomic. I'm not a fan boy of either ati or nvidia but 229 (could even get a decent 3870 single slot for about 230 also for the ati route) for better/equal performance with no bundle vs 300 dollar card with a some extras id say don't make the same mistake I did and go with a cheaper card and save 70 bucks for another part or make your own bundle and give it to yourself!
Addendum to my review
- Pros: Raising my review since I have learned a tiny bit with regards to tweaking the current crop of ATI drivers...some of the flickering problems I mentioned still exist, but are much more rare now, so much that it's an exception.
- Cons: None, my one "con" from my first review is mostly resolved
- Other Thoughts: To the "fanboi" arguements, including this "Tommmmmmybooooy" guy. Not saying you are, but who's to say you're not "fanboi" number one? And you know what, I can crank up anti aliasing and everything else on the cards, they still seem as fast just eyeballing a game, but see my 3dmark06 score drop a good 3000 points. And yes, that's in the driver, NOT the 3dMark06 settings. So...did you fiddle with the drivers? :P I own these cards, I'm debating getting a 3870x2 in a couple months, and running them crossfirex with one of these, putting the other in my spare PC..but I know a 3870 in framerates, EVERYTHING else being equal INCLUDING driver settings won't quite beat a 8800gt. :P will come close, but won't quite top it.
And no, I'm not a fanboi. If Nvidia comes out with something in a bit that makes these look terrible, these go into the spare PC, the new Nvidia product into the main. If ATI does it, then I'll get the new ATI one.
i does out perform an 8800gt...
- Pros: im still using my same system i had from my questionable moneyspending quest for a good gaming rig. and i stumbled upon the 8800gt... it was good and i used it for a good while. mind you this is all based on out-of-the-box specs.
- Cons: i dont have this card specifically, but i do have a 3870. and after switching videocards and playing games and using 3d mark, ive discovered that i get around 14,900 with the 8800gt and about 15,600 with the hd3870. no hardware changes made. still running phenom 9600, 4gb corsair dominator 1066, and still have raid. did not upgrade anything ecpt the gpus.
- Other Thoughts: so to shut both of you fan boys up and show a collective review, i think that this card DOES INDEED out perform an out-of-the-box 8800gt. and im planning on buying three more for my MSI K9A2 Platinum.
