4 out of 5 eggsA SOLDIER of a graphics card.

Pros: This card, despite its age, is well capable of running any game released in 2010-11, and depending on the title, sometimes a bit beyond (Loadout, for example, can be handled well by the 4850, despite having been released earlier this month.)

Heat has never been a problem for this card. The 4850 was apparently designed to take temperatures of up to 120C on stock-cooled cards, so any risk of overheating that this card might face is completely out the window, especially if your system cooling is good.

Probably the best part of the card is that its drivers are utterly solid. Well into its legacy age, the driver support for this line is completely stable - in fact, to the point that a large deal of older games likely were tested/designed around this card line. Because of this, the graphical quality offered by this card is very robust, with little to no artifacts or rendering aliasing you might see with some other, newer cards.

Cons: The biggest con is that it's utterly antiquated. It's right there in its specs: In a day and age where most games are based around Dx11, The 4850 can only handle up to Dx10. It's not a concern if you are more of a fan of last gen's gaming scene or just want to enjoy non-graphics intensive games (Civ 5, Starcraft II, Indie games, etc), but do not look to this card if you're planning to play something like CoD Ghosts or Saints Row IV. It just won't be able to handle. Games like SR III or Bioshock Infinite are likely the card's upper limits.

Having only 512 MB of VRAM means that the card really only reliably supports resolutions of around 1600x900 for gaming. It also has poor implications about support for features such as HD textures (It can only handle Skyrim at medium quality, for example.) The most likely cause of crashes on the 4850 is not due to overheating or hardware failure, but usually just because VRAM runs out - which is actually preferable, as the crashes involved usually are just CTDs instead of complete system failure or a sudden restart.

Running a 4850 can be a bit nerve-wracking if you're used to more conventional video card temperatures and are consciously tracking them. I haven't used specifically the Sapphire edition of this card model, but in my experience, whereas most other AMD models I used usually only peaked at temperatures around 60-80 C, The 4850 I had reached temperatures well in excess of 100 - at which point the fan will be at full blast and very noisy. Wear headphones, is all I can say. Still, somehow, even after 5 years of running, sometimes for hours on end with fans at full blast, my video card still hasn't given out. It's old, but I'll be darned if it isn't robust.

Other Thoughts: I mentioned it in passing on the Con side, but the 4850 I'm using isn't actually specifically this Sapphire model. To the best of my knowledge, it's a default ATI (now amd) built model that was included in a DELL studio desktop. To that end, the cooling in this model could very well be a lot more effective and quiet, though at a glance, the shape, size, color, and specs of the card do look identical to what I have - just the inclusion of a Sapphire logo brand.

5 out of 5 eggsWow, it's nice

Pros: I love this card. I bought my computer (an fx6800-01e) on Craigslist a few months ago for $200. This card is part of the system. And yes, I said TWO-HUNDRED. I'm aware that my system goes for well over $1000.

Anyways, this card works smoothly. Even though it was several years old when I bought my computer, it still works great. Runs all my games at high settings. For the price you can't get any better.

Cons: It is beginning to fail on me (probably because I am leaving my case open and the dust is settling in) But that's no reason to lose an egg.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame that it's discontinued. It's a very nice card for a moderately casual gamer. At least if you have a fast CPU.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a CHAMP!

Pros: have had this badboy from a stock gateway fx 6800-01e and it has survived temps of 110 C+ reboots at 120 C but hey ive had him for around 4-6 years and have only had to clean him out about 3 times from it getting clogged from derbies

Cons: now its discontinued

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate with FarCry 2

Pros: I wanted to post an update 4 months after I first purchsaed this card. I just picked up FarCry 2 and the game looks amazing. With this card I have FC2 running at max settings and DX10 @ 1680x1050. Smooth like butter...

Cons: none, since the new ATI hotfix gave us fan speed control in the CCC

Other Thoughts: e2180 o/c 3.0GHz, 2GB 800MHz DDR2, 250GB Seagate ES.2, ATI Radeon 4850.

3 out of 5 eggsOk on ccc8.7

Pros: 256 bit interface and plays all games at high or highest settings. Installed with ccc 8.7 easy enough.

Cons: After CCC 8.7 i havent been able to get CCC 8.8 thru 8.10 to install. Have done 9 full reformatts and installs of windows and still wont install. Sapphire said 1 card was bad that was why then they said they thought my motherboard bios needed updated. I have updated the bios to the newest aviable and still i get bsod on ccc 8.10 and on 8.8 and 8.9 visya disables my vga drivers as incompatiale with vista. Games crash on 8.7 after 30 minutes to an hour.

Other Thoughts: Will have to call newegg and RMA both cards thank heaven i didnt get rebate or i would be dealing with sapphire itself. This way i know that newegg will take care of it in a timely manner and wont give me the headaches id probably get from sapphire.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet Card

Pros: Sweet sweet sweet card. Rated very well on other websites (T*oms Hardwa*e).

Cons: Just alittle long...like 1" between card and Hard Drive.

Other Thoughts: Does run alittle hot, but good ventilation and fans can fix it...

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Put a S1 on this bad boy and it will run very cool 39c at idle and high 40's during gaming to low low 50's under street test

Overclock well

Cons: I get a hardware error from ati if i have it clocked to high during gaming, might be my buggy gigabyte board

Other Thoughts: Hardware error pops up during gaming and has crashed my system, might be something else tho
I have the newest drivers. Card is fast and LOVE THE S1 cooler

5 out of 5 eggs800 Stream Processors

Pros: Single slot. Really fast. Crushes my former X1900 crossfire and uses only 1 slot. When these guys get down below $150 again, I might just get another! Rock on AMD/ATI. Doesn't seem any hotter than those X1900's. Oh, Very Quiet too!

Cons: Made me go out and buy a 24" Widescreen Display so I can take advantage of the insane resolutions this thing knocks out!

Other Thoughts: Hah, now I am considering a blu-ray drive too.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Value

Pros: Handles everything nicely, scores over 30FPS average on Call of Jaurez DX10 benchmark at 1680x1050. This is a full 10FPS faster than my old board, a HD2900XT.

Cons: 1st board was DOA, but thanks to newegg's RMA process, 2nd board received was fine.

Other Thoughts: Great single slot solution.
