5 out of 5 eggsradeon hd 4870

Pros: sexy ,reliable,cheap,powerful

Cons: gets to hot for my liking
ati has classed it under 'legacy' so dont expect anymore driver updates
Pwoer hungry

Other Thoughts: this card is a faithful beast and has served me better than any other card i ever had.
I upgraded to a sapphire hd 7770 and just to try direct x 11 games and in my opinion i could have kept my hd 4870.
I do see improvement but just minimal

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't last

Pros: Worked good for almost one year of light use.

Cons: Started causing problems after 11 months, blue screen crashes at 1 yr mark of light usage. Expected much more from this card! Back to nvidea I guess.

Other Thoughts: Did all the usual "fixes",updating drivers, running memtest, etc to rule out other possible troubles. Finally replaced with an old 7300GT and voila! no more trouble.

1 out of 5 eggsCrashes

Pros: None or...
Only crashes every 30-45 minutes, if that is a pro?
Bought it on sale, if you call 60 $ for a defective card a sale?

Cons: It crashes and generates artifacts in games at the default of speed of 750/900. I tried different games, patches, drivers, bios settings, all to no avail. I spent days trying to resolve crashes, but the card is defective. As another reviewer mentioned, they had a sale and were clearing out junk.

Other Thoughts: Avoid. My card was made in 2008 and like most of the other reviewers, it doesn't function correctly. Buy a newer 7000 series on sale. Thankfully, this product has been discontinued.

3 out of 5 eggsold tech

Pros: The Card is functional, had no issues installing and getting the latest drivers on Windows 7 64bit. I have it running along side the built-in graphics to run three monitors, two run by the card and one run by the built-in. I don't play games so can't say much about DirectX/OpenGL support and performance.

Cons: If the fan is above 50% is gets really noisy.
The card has only 512MB, with two monitors Win7 64 disables the aero color scheme.

4 out of 5 eggsGood card, great price

Pros: Got it for $60. At first it max out at very low setting so I have to AMD site to download AMD Catalyst driver 12.1 in order for it to run at default setting core clock 750 and memory clock at 900. With AMD CCC, it looks like you can overclock it more if it is able to run it but this one.

Cons: See artifact when play game at default 750/900 so I drop it down to 725/875

1 out of 5 eggsIt works finaly ,I think

Pros: Looks cool thru the window, Its red. Makes a good space heater [ I live in Minnesota], I can sell it for more than I paid for it

Cons: Doesn't come with a manual, No crossfire bridge, lots of misleading setup info on the web, Info from the Radeon web site is vague

Other Thoughts: My computer system is AMD phenomII 3.2 gig quad-core. MSI 870A-G54 Crossfire certified MB Diamond Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit video card x2 and Coolmax 700w crossfire certified power supply .This video card is made by Radeon not Diamond. I have seen this model from video card from makers like Asus. The only difference being a decal. Installing this card in crossfire setup was hard due to its size and vague info on the Radeon website. The drivers kept crashing my system until I found a basic one that worked. Radeon customer support held didn't work I figured it out myself.

1 out of 5 eggsDid not work as advertised

Pros: The price was good.

Cons: It only did 200/350. No where stock. Would not work pass those settings.

Other Thoughts: I get it, clear out junk cards at a low price. Some will work and some returned.

4 out of 5 eggsATI 4870

Pros: Purchased to upgrade my pc to x-fire
Installed without issue and works...sort of

Cons: Factory bios is flawed. Those that mentioned cards working breifly should have watched the cooling fan. Does not spool up as it should. Used CCC overdrive to alter fan speed manually and it worked great. Was underclocked so I had to use overdrive to raise it to spec. Stock speeds and fan control lost an egg.

Other Thoughts: bios patches for cards this old are few to be found. I am going to set up CCC profile to set the fan speeds.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Last offering of the Diamond 4870. Cooling sealed and exhausts outside the tower. Passed benchmarks a little slower then my MSI 4870 1 gig card. X-Fire

Cons: Stock fan controller not functioning. Manual over ride fixes problem. I think it needs an updated bios flash.

Other Thoughts: Last of the 4870's and has been discontinued. Registered today when I received it. I hope I can locate an updated bios flash.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card, can't beat the price.

Pros: I've been looking for a new video card for quite some time, but was having a hard time choosing because I'm not much of a gamer. Needed something more powerful than the onboard Intel 3000 from my i5 2500k, but didn't want to spend a fortune. I had my eye on the 6850, but it was a little too expensive for what I would use it for. I also didn't need eyefinity so the 4870 was the perfect choice for me. Picked it up for $59 shipped.

Cons: Stock clock speeds were a little low. My 2500k WEI was 6.2, and this was only 6.4 out of the box. Initially I was a little disappointed until I ran the Catalyst OC utility. Bumped GPU to 750 and the memory to 900. Increased my WEI from 6.4 to 7.5.

Other Thoughts: Card is OEM so no driver disc or DVI>VGA adapter. Didn't need either though. Some users complain of heat and noise. I've experienced neither (my case is a Cooler Maser HAF). Uses both PCIE power connections.
