5 out of 5 eggsFollow- up review

Pros: Outstanding card ! Runs all games flawlessly @ 1680x1050 on high settings. Standard Reference cooler works very well along with the Smart Dr. utility to keep the card running cool, 41-42c idle and around 55-58c load, and doesn't interfere with my CCC. I want to pick up another to Crossfire.

Cons: Not 1GB....I had purchased this just before ATi released their 1GB model....This card had been discontinued by Newegg for sometime, except for an occasional open box item...current price !!! (these cons I've listed have no bearing on the performance of this card)

Other Thoughts: This is a 2nd review from 8/28/08, having owned and run this card for over the past 6mos. I 'm very pleased with it's overall performance and have not had one issue with it.
I guess Newegg discontinued this card after the 1GB versions started flooding the market and people were buying those up over the 512mb. But I get the feeling that since prices have fallen the 512mb cards have become very good deals, especially for those looking to crossfire their system.
I've been looking for another card to do that, but wanted a good match with this one. When I saw this card listed again in the retail version I was excited about buying it until I saw the price. It's the same as what I bought it for over 6mos. ago. It's as or more expensive than just about any other 4870 out there including 1GB versions.
Come on Newegg, you guys are great, I've purchased alot of items from you at good prices.....But whats up with this ? This card should be well below 200 dollars... :(

5 out of 5 eggsNew card version?

Pros: I haven't installed it yet, but wow...looks cool!

Cons: So, I just received my card in the mail from newegg. My card looks nothing like the one in the picture on the newegg site! It doesn't have the case with the picture of ninja-girl on it (fine by me!). Also, it is a single-slot width at the I/O, not the double-wide design pictured. Also, the fan is larger and more centrally located. Otherwise, everything else - box, CD, accessories, etc - are all the same. Is this a newer version of the card I got? I hope so. I really like its design better!

Other Thoughts: Anyone else get this? I will post again with performance, etc when I get my rig built and up and running. Rig --> Antec 1200 case; Antec 1000w PSU; ASUS Rampage Extreme mobo; Core2Quad Q9550; 2x2GB DDR3; 2xVelociRaptors; ASUS EAH4870; 2xASUS DVDs

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Card - Nvidia who?

Pros: Great card I bought this to replace my old 7800 Gt that would atrifact on me occasionaly I got my money out of it after 4 years It was time to upgrade. Runs everything I throw at it. Runs crysis to my expectations and some. COD4, Eve online run flawlessly. Great packaging which Asus is known for also the extras that came with it are nice.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Another reason why Asus has won in my book. They have a neat utility that you can adjust fan speed with and monitor temps -" Asus Smart Doctor" that they include, no need to manualy edit files. The covert art on the card is a welcomed since Im a fan of fantasy art. When the fan speed is adjusted the cooling is not bad at all. I know some other brands dont offer the fan speed adjustment utility like Asus does, people that arnt aware that the card runs a low fan speed out of the box and arnt aware of ccc file adjustment give it a lower rating. The stock cooler is plenty beefy, you dont have to buy and install a aftermarket cooler ( good-bye warranty) Idle temps are 45, under load between 55-60c

System Specs:
Asus M3A32 MVP 790Fx mobo
Asus HD4870
Asus Lion Square CPU cooler
AMD 9950 o'c to 3.0 ghz
Corsair DOMINATOR 4 gb at 1066mhz
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 watt PSU
Wrapped up in a Thermaltake Armor + Full-Tower case

5 out of 5 eggsI can Tell the diference

Pros: EAH4870 its performance is Really impresive, fast DDR5 helps for bigger Bandwidth, core works at 750 mhz By default Playable crysis With all the eye candy stuff. as plus asus includes an amazing black box Package and a slick leather black mouse pad.HDMI Conventer & onboard hd-audio chipset (video+audio on HDMI cable) now thats a plus.

Cons: Runs really hot Because fan speed is at 20% speed by default but... ASUS includes a Solution software "SMART DOCTOR" that help you to configure the fan to keep you card cooler as recomendation dont go More than 40% over that, fan noise get really annoying, Cover art is a pink Samurai-Ninja girl which i dont like too much

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, this upgrade is not Worth it if you already own a last generation of Nvidia or ATI card with not less than 256 megs of DD3 ram, you dont need more for today's gaming, but if you cannot wait to have More frame Rate, power and be safe for coming games then GO FOR IT!! (newegg is the best)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Card

Pros: No problems with it so far. Runs all of my games smoothly at 1900x1200 resolution/max settings. I'm able to get about 60fps+ on most games, which is great since I run V-sync anyway. Excellent card for under 300 USD!

Cons: Although it still ran flawlessly with its stock cooler, it ran very hot, and when I turned the fan speed up, it was a bit too noisy to my liking. I installed a great aftermarket cooler for it and it ran 20-30C cooler. The performance was still the same, I'm just glad my small room doesn't heat up with the card now!

Other Thoughts: If you like great performance for a great price, please do buy this or the 4850!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Bang For Your Bucks

Pros: Bought this as an upgrade from a 8800GTS 640 MB card. HUGE improvement over old card! Smart Doctor a very flexible program for fan control. Manual Mode for setting a fixed speed, Smart Cooling for setting temp. boundaries for fan speed and Auto.

Cons: None. Just install Smart Doctor and you won't have to fiddle with CCC every time you start up.

Other Thoughts: Currently have fan set at 40% which is barely audible over my case fans. Current temps. 42C idle and 65C full tilt boogie.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh Quality / High Performance !

Pros: This card runs fast and smooth. Installed perfectly, driver updates were a breeze and the CCC works great. It doesn't get bogged down with any of the high-end games... AoC, CoD4, Supreme Commander, Crysis (high settings @ 1680x1050), etc..etc. The Smart Doctor utility works great to correct any fan speed issues it has. You can manually set your fan speeds or pre-set the temp. boundries for low, med, high and highest temp ranges and the fan speed will automaticlly ramp up to the % that are set. The control panel will give you your GPU read-outs in C and F temps. But unless your using an ASUS MB the other read-outs for voltages and memory won't diplay in the Dr....though I can that in the BIOS....Idle temps@45-46C...at load 57-59C

Cons: Just the heat factor, as a lot of others have mentioned, but controlling the fan speed takes care of that, along with good air-flow mgmt. in your case. (But of course)

Other Thoughts: I was very impressed with the packaging of this card, ASUS made sure that it was protected with high quality packing materials. My wife works in graphics and commerical printing and even she commented on the high quality of the print and packaging. The card itself is stunning in design and workmanship, plus comes with a 3 year warranty (I know, Visi*n Tech has the lifetime), but I bought it when this was a bit cheaper)...I also spoke with tech support at ASUS about the card temps and he told me the card is designed to withstand tempetures up to 90C...My sys*new build..Apollo NZXT Mid-Tower (w/3 Antec 120mm case fans), ASUS HD4870, C2D 8500@3.16GHz, Gigabyte X48-DS4, 4GB(2x2GB)G.Skill DDR21066 PC28500, Zalman CNPS9700, ABS 900w(modular)PSU, (2)WD SE16 640GB HHD, LITEON 20x DVD Burner, SB X-Fi Titanium Fatil1ty Pro, Thermaltake 80mm Duel PCI Slot Fan, (oh yeah..and a floppy drive.. :-)....I'm really happy with this card !...Thxxx ASUS....THxxx Newegg !

5 out of 5 eggsThis card is hot! I mean that literally, too.

Pros: First of all, this card is a beauty. By that I mean the art work/sticker of the pretty ninja girl or whatever she is. Anyway, I'm running an 3.2 Q6600 with this 4870 and my 3Dmark scores are great, performance in a bevy of games fare extremely well (Crysis, Cod4, etc etc). This card is definitely worth the money.

Cons: Ok, I think everyone who reviewed this card mentioned that it ran hot...and they weren't lying. Before I installed the hotfix and tinkered around with the fan settings, the card was running 100C+ during heavy performance and around 75C idle. If it weren't for the great Smart Doctor software and the good cooling system, I'd say the heat levels were unacceptable, and it's very loud above 50% fan speed.

Other Thoughts: I might consider getting another one of these babies down the line for crossfire, but the temp level is bothering me. I think it's worth the risk though.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Card

Pros: I´m amazed by the quality of this product. First the packaging looks like a very fine product. Then the utilities are very useful. flawless installation. The performace is excelent.

Cons: as other people said the heat, but it is not a big deal

Other Thoughts: For the ones that take too much importance to the benchmarks:
I used to have a 3870 which scored 10k aprox now the 4870 scores around 12k. But you have to test this card it works 2 or 3 times better than the 3870 so dont put so much attention to benchs they are not always telling the truth.
